Haha! I wanted to point out the same thing. 😁 So instead I'll point out something else: Notice how the newly regenerated Mel, now in her River body, casually says she'll "take the age down a little, just gradually, to freak people out"? That's another genius in-universe explanation for the fact that, even though we've been meeting earlier and earlier versions of River, the real-life Alex Kingston has naturally grown a little older each time she appears again in the series.

This was a bonkers episode and I think EVERYONE had the same reaction as you when they saw the title at the end of the previous episode. Its odd because the whole Hitler and being in Nazi Germany aspect is really not all that important, but you kinda feel like it should be. There should have been military everywhere after what River did, but they never materialise. The good stuff is great, though. I love the regeneration, the moment Amy reveals who River is to Melody and the "Hello Sweetie," moment. But for me, this episode is worth it for two reasons alone; 1. Rory punching Hitler in the face. 2. Rory: "Shut up, Hitler." 'nuff said.
@chinareds547 жыл бұрын
I think it was a deliberate way to hype the episode without providing any real spoilers. If they had called it "The Birth of River Song" it would have given away the Mels reveal (although Sess figured it out like she always does)
@therealscarred21127 жыл бұрын
I would add a third... Amy: “Can you ride a motorbike?” Rory: “I expect so. It's that sort of day.” I love that within “A Good Man Goes To War” & “Let’s Kill Hitler” (which can be looked at as a loose Two-Parter), Rory has shown him developed into if not a full-blown Superhero (also counting his actions as The Last Centurion), then absolutely a “Man Of Action” compared to his initial time aboard the TARDIS in Series 5.

Fabulous episode and I think one of Matt Smith's very finest performances as the Doctor. The emotional highlight for me I felt River giving up her regenerations to bring him back from the brink of death. Given the Doctor's history with Time Lords, it's so beautiful that it's an aspect of Time Lord culture - regeneration energy - that even allows River to save him. As we know from last week, River got her scintilla of Time Lord DNA from the TARDIS, so she plays a role here too. My only issue with the episode is the treatment of Nazi Berlin. No problem with the use of Hitler as a somewhat macabre comic relief, but I do feel especially as the drama reaches it's conclusion, that the seriousness of NAzi Germany as a subject is somewhat undercut by being essentially a mere backdrop against which this admittedly moving and epic sf psychodrama plays out. It's as if it's mere playground for the gods, and never really allowed to intrude upon the drama. Imagine the same events playing out in Stalin's Moscow, Saddam's Iraq, anywhere like that. They play out the same way, and therein lies the problem. Having said that, I think the antibodies, and the Tessalecta's modus operandi, does redeem thematically this problem, insofar as it mirrors the mechanical, bureaucratic aspect of the Nazi's methods of death. I adore "you will experience a slight tingling sensation and then death", I think it's maybe the funniest line ever spoken by a Dr Who monster.

'River, you know my name. There's only one reason I would tell anyone my name. I suggest you look up (this isn't a spoiler, has nothing to do with the storyline) classic doctor who clips and familiar yourself with "Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart", he was a character who was close friends with the doctor in classic who and gets a 15 second mention in this season in a later episode, and you won't get it unless you know who he is.

Not really, it has nothing to do with the story line of the current series. It's just a little throw back to classic who. If she doesn't she will not get it at all and go "huh what".

What is and isn't a spoiler will always be debated. Personally, I don't think it's nearly as bad as that comment farther down that basically goes "who else is waiting for Sesska's reaction to (specific episode number)". But some people will be like "if you mention the Doctor is in next week's episode, that's a SPOILER because it rules out the 0.0001% possibility that they did a Doctor-free episode". :p Then again, I don't think I had any idea who the Brigadier was back when I saw that episode the first time, and it didn't really damage my enjoyment of the episode, so I think it's fine either way.
@laracameron98767 жыл бұрын
Not really necessary, Jess didn't know who Sarah Jane was and she still absolutely loved her during School Reunion and the Season 4 finale. She didn't know who Davros was and she still had great reactions to his episodes. Two times in this episode what I term “recursive actions” take place specifically to members to the Pond family. Early on with Mels/River, Amy & Rory find out she has “named (her) daughter... after (her) daughter”. Later on, Melody Pond materializes the TARDIS around Amy & Rory inside the “Teselecta” to save them from its Antibodies, stating “I see to be able to fly her. She taught me how”. Thus, “The Doctor’s Wife” taught The Doctor’s Wife how to fly the TARDIS. 😉
@drmengus Жыл бұрын
I just realized: River said she was taught how to fly the Tardis by the best, and that it was a shame the Doctor was not present at that time. River instinctively knows how to fly the Tardis (assisted by the Tardis itself) and the Doctor was dying, so he wasn't present...

Well, when the choice was this or sleep, there never really was a choice, was there? Of course I'm gonna watch this! This was actually the first episode of Doctor Who I watched when it aired. Before this I'd only caught up. I agree with your thoughts on this a lot. It feels a bit all over the place and the sideplot and framing is confusing, even if it's amazing to see Rory punch Hitler and put him in the cupboard. But the River stuff is amazing, and the Doctor and her interactions are my favorite parts of the episode. It also has some great one liners, as well as dropping some overarching plot info. So while my thoughts on it are split, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Your reaction to Rose showing up was quite hilarious. But also all the getting emotional in this video had me getting emotional as well! Fish fingers and custard indeed. Oh, and the scene where he whispered something to River and she only later understands that it was to her... that's sweet. As well as the origin of her diary. I think I saw some genuine fear in you that we'd lose Eleven here. I feel a bit mean, but I kinda like that you don't know when it's gonna happen? Because we of course all did because it's so hard to stay away from spoilers. You've managed amazingly. Loved the reaction, definitely worth staying up late. Great editing as well! I liked The Girl Who Waited. Karen Gillan is fantastic in that episode.

River Rocks! :-)

THANK YOU!! Your love of River is everything!! If you actually hated her this would be getting really awkward right now! Crazy, touching and quite a bit silly DW is like that sometimes (often). The plot feels messy and undisciplined, but there's a lot to enjoy still. The River origin story with her diary, the archeology, her relationship with the Doctor. Rory still getting some of the best moments (hitler in the cupboard never gets old!). The love you have for this particular Doctor means so much too. Also, still no mercy for Rose lol. Loved this reaction. The amazing effort you put in to make us happy is incredible. You're truly awesome. Take care.

Damn. Because of what River did here, she dies in The Library with Ten.
@TheKat123646 жыл бұрын
Well even if she could regenerate she would still die, thats why she gave her life because what Ten was willing to do he couldnt regenerate from.

Really love this one, as weird as it is. It's just so much fun and doesn't stop for five seconds to breathe, and focusing on River is always a plus. Admittedly I had to seriously try hard to overlook how Mels was reverse engineered into the story, but then I'm really not a fan of the Series 6 story arc at all, and that was one of the reasons why - very convenient plotting. I liked the red herring of Hitler though... I can't recall if it was Steven Moffat or Matt Smith who said it, but one of them said the only way you could respectfully include Hitler in Doctor Who is to shove him in a cupboard and never speak to him again. So yeah, a lot of fun and we're only an episode or two away from some of my favourites of the series. Whilst I'm not a fan of the main story, there's so much to love about individual episodes in Series 6...it's been fun going back through them :)

Yeah, that was the one problem I had with Mels. I guess they hadn't figured out River's story yet back in S5, but it would have been perfect to have a short scene with her (or at least some sort of reference to her) in Eleventh Hour. But of course she couldn't cross paths with the Doctor in that episode, or any time before LKH. Maybe they could have put her in The Impossible Astronaut, but the Ponds spent so little time in Leadworth before heading to America that devoting even one scene to this random friend would have clued people in that she was important. But regardless, if she had been referenced before AGMGTW, Amy's decision to name the baby Melody would have been quite natural and wouldn't have raised any red flags.

Yeah, that's precisely the problem...it only ends up coming across as if you've written yourself into a corner and you have to make things up to get out of it, which is what happens here essentially. They use Mels' line about 'I don't do weddings' to explain away why she was absent from the wedding, but it just doesn't sit well and isn't good writing. Thinking back to Series 5, the show wanted the viewer to be clever enough to notice a little detail like the Doctor wearing his jacket in the Flesh & Stone scene where he's actually travelling through time in the finale, but then it's dumb enough to include a printing error on Rory's ID badge in The Eleventh Hour which got fans speculating that something was up with him when in fact it was just a printing error. It's just sloppy and inconsistent...and aspects of that carry over into Series 6 and Series 7 which make them both frustrating...because many of the standalone stories are fantastic, but Moffat (even by his own admission at this point where Series 7 is concerned) was out of his depth when it came to trying to make his grander ideas work. Being careful not to spoil anything from beyond LKH, I'll simply say that Moffat's story arcs just don't work for me as they're convoluted (as opposed to complicated) and nonsensical (in a way that goes beyond the realms of credibility for even a fantasy show) - but in the case of Let's Kill Hitler it manages to be so witty and fun on this occasion that it's excusable!

I find it best to just take the presence or absence of the Pond's friends and relations as variable. If you start worrying about who does or doesn't turn up, is going to get considered or indeed exist then it will end in discontent at best. It may be easier to keep track of Rose's circle.

The rest of this season is kinda strange overall. One episode stands out as one of my all time favorites, and I can't for you to watch it.

I wonder if Rose is more likeable on average for people who first saw her in 2005 when the show restarted, as their first experience of Doctor Who.

Liked River, hated the whole Hitler thing including the entire teensy temporal police plot device which raised untold questions of logic, morality and what have you that couldn't really be resolved by locking Hitler in a cupboard. The only upside was that Rory got to hit Hitler. Oh and yeah - naff off Rose.
