As a reminder for the timeline of this show: Adam called John when he was 12. Sam was 18 and just went of to Stanford and Dean was 22. So either John just parted with Dean so they both could hunt solo when Adam called or they were still together and John left his oldest kid the empty nester behind the second he learned he had another kid to traumatize.

As a counselor I think they need counseling on better guns - 10mm pistols, 300 Blackout AR15 SBR's with suppressors and subsonic and supersonic rounds, and better shotguns though it would be a problem getting semi-auto shotguns to function with both silver loads and salt loads could be done just have to load the salt mixed with lead to allow it to cycle and fine tune the gas/recoil system; and night vision. Therapy, well maybe, but there are some things, like their lives that even therapy can't fix, cause if they lived to be 100 there wouldn't be enough time to work through all that "stuff."

What you say about Dean never having a choice is so true. After Mary's death, Dean basically had to step into her shoes, to care for Sam and emotionally support John too. Therefore, he never really had the option of being his own person, or pursuing his own interests, because it was so deeply ingrained in him that his purpose in life was to care for his family. Remember all the way back in season 1 episode 6 when the shapeshifter went through Dean's thoughts and memories and then told Sam "You don't think I had dreams of my own? But dad needed me! Where were you?". Of course Dean would've never actually admitted this with his own mouth, but the jealousy and resentment is very much always there. Then later on he tells Sam this: "You've always known what you want, and you go after it. You stand up to Dad. You always have. Hell, I wish I.... Anyway, I admire that about you. I'm proud of you, Sammy." So on the one hand he envies Sam for getting away, while on the other hand he's proud of him for having the guts to do so.

Fully agree. And for me, Dean consciously or not, is acting more parental towards Sam than a brother (having to be both a father and a mother). Because of the burden (yes burden as this should have been Johns role) of having to put his own childhood on hold to take care of his family. I feel so bad for Dean. Especially considering some other things that will be happening later in the series.

"I finally get why you and dad butted heads so much. You two are practically the same person. I worshipped the guy, you know? Dressed like him, acted like him, listened to the same music. But you were more like him than I will ever be." After seeing Dean try to imitate his father all these years, it's very cathartic to hear him acknowledge what a hollow impersonation it really was. And even moreso for him to not even WANT to be like John anymore. Contrast that to Sam, who has spent his entire life desperately trying to be nothing like John, but ultimately being very similar, and at this point he's even flattered when confronted by that.

Yeah, it's a running gag that Dean always loses at Rock, Paper, Scissors (he always picks scissors, and Sam knows it lol). There's a fan theory that Dean does it deliberately so Sam doesn't have to go into dangerous situations 🥺🥺🥺

I headcanon that this started as a way for Dean to control who got the "worst" end of the stick for whatever situation, after Sam reached the "I can do it too!" stage. He'd make a big deal about not wanting to do some crappy job, then lose on purpose: Sam would gloat, not argue about Dean protecting Sam/martyring himself...and stay safe.

Great reaction as always. I loved the last lines of this episode, because you know that Dean did not mean that as a compliment. I think Dean always subconsciously had doubts about how his father raised them, but he is now getting to the point where he is able to voice them and not always be willing to defend John's poorer decisions. Where Sam had almost done the complete opposite. Part of the reason I think that Dean tried to imitate John so much, is that as a 4 year old losing his mother and his home, he gravitated to the one stabilizing force in his life that he had left which was John. I feel bad for Dean because since he is 4 years older than Sam, even if he had wanted to leave and go to college or do something else with his life, there is no way that he would have left a 14 year old Sam alone with John.

Sam's firm "I'll take that as a compliment" vs Dean's bitter "you can take it any way you want" is such good writing! It really showcases how much they've both grown and changed since season 1. Back then Dean was the ever obedient "daddy's blunt little instrument" who would defend John at any cost, while Sam who was the rebellious and defiant son who would take any opportunity to butt heads with John. Now, Dean is just completely disillusioned. He still loves John, but he no longer holds him on a pedestal or thinks highly of the way they were raised. Sam on the other had, with all his obsessive rage and nihilistic determination, can truly relate to John and is finally able to understand why he did what he did.

@@stoneheart8231 I think this episode also forced Dean to face the drastic change in Sam. Changes that Dean doesn't see as changes for the better. He is seeing Sam show the worst parts of John. Dean probably got to see the worst parts of John after Mary died, but remembers some of the best parts from before. As he comes to grips with his conflicting feelings on John, seeing Sam exhibiting the worst parts of John is going to be worrisome for him.

It's funny that Dean meant it as an insult and Sam took it as a compliment because in S1-S2 the roles would be switched. Dean used to be the one defending John while Sam was blaming him and being mad at him for what he did.

I just have to say, I love your after episode discussions. You always have such thoughtful analysis of the characters and their actions. You even gave thoughtful and reasonable analysis of John...which doesn't happen with most other reactors I've seen lol. I think you're right about Sam and Dean sort of being on opposite journeys. Like you said, Dean is slowly realizing that his parents were flawed individuals(as most people are), and Sam is slowly starting to understand his father more and realize why he may have made some of the decisions that he did. I don't think there is anything wrong with either of those journeys. And I think both brothers had very good points in how they wanted to handle the Adam situation. For some reason though, people feel like they have to pick sides in which brother was "more right". I've noticed people tend to do that a lot within this Fandom(not everyone just some people) lol. Anyway, RIP Adam 🙏

Sam is definitely number one in Dean’s life. We learned in this episode that Dean doesn’t like to share. He didn’t like Sam suddenly having another brother. I love listening to your assessments of the boys. You have great insights into these two characters that I love so much!

Jess just nails it with the psyche of those characters! Dean is a protector; we knew that already. But it took me like, 12 seasons to get that Sam is more of the philosophy of "show them of to fish" in contrasr with Dean's "Get a man an fish"/"Get a man protection" approach, if you know what I mean. I have this image in my head that, if Sam was ever a parent, he would be the kind of dad that would explain to his kid why they shouldn't do drugs, but if they really wanted to try it anyway, he would sit and smoke with them, in a controled environment.

Yeah, Sam and Dean went through more than him overall, but Adam went from being a fairly normal guy to getting royally screwed by his Winchester lineage in an instant and never had chance to do anything about it.

I love Dean's protective side and the love he has for his brother but the problem lies when he doesn't sees himself as important as Sam or John. Like selling your soul, having one year of life (knowing you will end up in hell) just for your brother is...He doesn't think he matters besides "the job" and that's just a consequence of how John raised him.

@@RottedRowan Bro he took Adam to a Baseball game and called here and there that’s it. Spoilers below Adam basically confirmed that when he comes back in Season 5. He wasn’t a great dad but he definitely loved his sons just really blinded by his revenge. The man sacrificed his life to save Dean in the end though because he realized all this. 🤷‍♂️ He’s not all bad. Everyone in this show has done awful stuff but people give them a pass.
