Just a little note: Manueline is a portuguese interpretation of late gothic architecture. If you strip the ornateness of the stonework you will note that you end up with the same shapes as gothic buildings in northern Europe. Baroque style is a later style in time, also ornate but in a diferent way (manueline loves nautical and tropical themes: ropes, interpretations of palm trees and exotic plants and animals, ships) Baroque in Portugal is mostly seen in its tempered less flamboyant way influenced by "manerism" a somewhat sober style adopted in southern Europe....until you go inside the building/church. Once inside is full on flamboyance with extatic saints and fat naked cherubs. Rich colours and materials

Hi!! I'm setubalense. Some Jardim do Bonfim sculptures are historicall, like Luísa Tidy and Bocage. Others are topical figures, like our fisherman's, or the people who sells in the market you hav showed. The dolfhins were painted by kids from diferentes schools of our city! Small artists!! 😉 Casa da Baía is part of the municipality. The purple city hall is from our flag, which is purple and white. Caso do Turismo, like Casa da Baía, sells regional products. Thank you for your promotion!! 😉😘🇵🇹

A very nice tour Shanna! It's interesting that my partner - who's from Lisbon - has, over twenty five years, shown me many, many parts of Portugal, yet until recently we'd never visited nearby Setubal, as she had the idea it was rather 'run down' and 'industrial.' What a pleasant surprise it was for us both when we finally arrived via Arrabida. Since then we''ve returned several times - her opinion totally changed! As for the Portuguese language - I think there are certain sounds which native English speakers just don't know where to put the tongue to make! I'm still trying......

SHANNA! So very gently bossy: "Shall we take a look?" "Come on." "Let's go!" The goal of most tours is to make you feel as if you've been there, done that. Your bossy tour leaves us wanting more. More cafes, more arts, more beauty. You could've said "lovely" a hundred more times and it still wouldn't be enough.
@shanash13 жыл бұрын
Oh, Emily--you are the sweetest! Yes, gently bossy, unless I'm hungry, then it's cranky bossy! But that's why we start with lunch, first :) I'm glad you enjoyed all my exclamations of "lovely" as there's more where those came from! :)

What are you on about? Your pronouncing in very good. I wouldn’t take you for a native but you are clear enough to get by. Glad to see such a kind look from abroad over that amazing place, it really is beautiful. You must however tell me where the pink dolphins are, I’ve never seen them. What I know the Sado river has is a community of Roazes Corvineiros known in English as Common bottlenose dolphin. Amazing creatures, if you take the ferry to Tróia you might just get lucky enough for them to swim alongside the ferry. Makes you want to jump in the water and play with them. Thank you for your dedication to exploring and learning about the city and the surrounding region, it’s quite heart warming for the locals to witness such appreciation.
@shanash12 жыл бұрын
Ah, thanks so much, Alexandre--I appreciate your kind words about my pronunciation. I am trying! I've seen the dolphins once on a trip to Tróia--I hope to have that experience again. I love it here, and am happy to learn all I can. I want to be an asset to the community--this place I call home. : )

All cities in Portugal make all type of events (cultural) or for kids. Odivelas where i live you can go to the library (municipal library) or to the city hall and ask for the pamphlet/brochure about all the events that going to happen in the city for that month or you can sign to receive that in your mail... ...but the best is the most of them are almost for free or cost so cheap you dont believe. I remember one day a friend ask to go see the performance of one friend in the theater call Malaposta (Odivelas) and i pay only 5€ for one the best performance (theater) i see in my life and the kids enter for free. And dont forget all museums and castles, monasteries are free every Sunday from 9am to 15pm. Portugal have the mind that culture is for everyone. Even Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra have some concerts for free, at least once a year, but right now i cant find information about that online.

Dont know if you know about it and forgot to mention or if you never noticed. At Casa da Baia, the area were you was showing the plates with all the bays world wide, the glass plates on the floor allow you to see Roman ruins under the ground. Setúbal had an amazing historical importance as a port and trading and a huge part of the city lies over Roman buildings or the remains of those buildings to be precise.
