I understand that your target audience is foreigners who would prefer to be in the heart of a city for multiple reasons. But i was born in Portugal, raised in the US for almost 60 years, and go back there on a regular basis, sometimes 2 to 3 times a year. The issue i have is the same as most guidebooks, certain areas are overhyped and others are completely ignored or mentioned only as a footnote. Portugal has something for everyone regardless of tastes! One big issue i see often is high cost of living, comparatively, of living in the city center. Nobody seems to mention that just by living in the outskirts, and driving 20 minutes, you can buy a home with land instead of an apartment for substantially less! Slower lifestyle, less convenient, but much cheaper. Smaller communities are a great way to go as far as cost while the amenities are still available with a short commute! Where i live, i can be in Porto in 45 minutes, and Aveiro in 15. I know its not feasible to cover everything, but putting it out there for anyone interested!

Hi João, we've highlighted some of those places for example, Maia and Póvoa de Varzim for those that are interested in the Porto area. Again, we know certain key things about our target demographic, which is likely why those two videos didn't perform very well on our channel. - Josh & Kalie

Great job! I am a portuguese from Braga, and a plus i would mention is that Braga will recive high speed trains in 2030-2035, the project is confirmed and this will conect Braga-Vigo(spain) in 30 min and Braga - Porto airport in 20 min. Coimbra and Aveiro will also benefit a lot from this project reducing the time to Porto/Lisbon by hours.🙂

Braga has a university, and a great vibe! Braga has a big Brazilian expat community. It was one of my favorite cities in Portugal. As opposed to Coimbra, which was a bit startling, because there were people shooting up drugs at the entrance to the grocery store. Sinatra, however, takes the cake! Absolutely magnificent!

@@ExpatsEverywhere Would have loved a final list with the cities listed by healthcare, with the green ones at top, the red ones on the bottom. They all run together as the video rolls by, so a final list would be helpful, especially for retirees for whom healthcare access is a particular consideration. For example, I only recall Porto as green; Gaia was yellow (?), but of course bing adjecent to Porto it could still be a good choice. And that brings me to my second wish list item. An indication of how long it would take to get from each yellow city to a green city. A 20 minute distance is very different from 90 minutes... But thanks for the video. Very informative. Maybe a video dedicated to expat retirees in the future, or did you already make one recently? Last, has the tax benefit for expat retirees completely disappeared? Does this mean 47% tax on all passive income, such as social security, 401Ks, etc. That would be a deal-breaker. Pension income was not taxed for 10 years. I could take 10%, maybe 15%, maybe even 20% if it did not have a timeframe limit (if it was locked in). But a marginal tax climbing to 47%? I would think that would eliminate 90% of new incoming retirees and their money...

Good video, Josh. Could I give you a challenge? Make a video about Central Portugal. No farther north than Aveiro, no farther south than Leiria, but stay off the coast. And the last parameter - towns with 50,000 people or less. There are so many scenic, historic towns in this area. You would be the first to do a video like this that I've seen (and I live in Central Portugal so my radar's up!). Obrigada
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Beth. I don't think we're willing to accept that challenge. We couldn't do it justice. These videos take a lot of resources (time, money and sometimes both) to do. There's probably a reason that there's not a comprehensive video guide out there about the topic. My guess is that it just wouldn't get people's attention. I mean, there's an outside chance that it's done like a Peter Santenello-style, but unfortunately, that's just not us. You know? We don't have a car, we have Cia in school, our audience isn't the Santenello-style, so straight out of the gate it wouldn't get the views for KZbin to pick it up. Sorry, that's just my honest response. I'm sure it's not what you wanted to hear but it's the truth. We simply couldn't pull it off well. - Josh

We've been looking at Tavira. Mediterranean climate, close to Spain, close to the rest of the Algarve, a bit less expensive... However, housing seems very limited in Tavira and not as inexpensive as you might think as well. Porto looks attractive, but perhaps overcast and/or rainy too much? I understand Coimbra is pricey (?), and Setubal may not be next to our metropolitan area of choice (Lisbon)?

Hi... Maybe yourself are not familiar that it also snows in Portugal, and a lot of people likes it a lot. So i dare you to go to "Serra da Estrela" this winter (if you are allowed to get to the top because of the snow). There are gorgeous places nearby with different cultures and foods on the surrounds of the mountain. The most popular city nearby is Covilhã, but you can also explore Guarda, Fundão (visit in spring to see the flourish of cherry trees) or Castelo Branco. People that prefers the country-side will also find these places a good place to live or visit. Enjoy this trip :)

I second that sentiment. I think the Algarve is underrated. There's isn't another part of Portugal with so many historic, picturesque, and vibrant towns all within 1 1/2hr drive. That's why I chose Portimao. If you combine Alvor and Ferragudo across the bridge where else can you have great beaches, restaurants, coastline hiking trails, good weather year round, lovely countryside to go motorcycling. If love an active lifestyle and the outdoors, it's hard to beat the Algarves.

I was going to visit in February, and my friends in Portugal told me the carnival in Loulé was a good idea. But, Nick commented on one of his videos, he wasn’t such a fan of that carnival. Congratulations for the video. Very well done. Just one observation, though: there is no "capital" in Madeira, or, better saying, the capital of Madeira is not Funchal; it's Lisbon. The capital of any point, place, town, city, region of Portugal is Lisbon. And, if you're wondering: that's right, Lisbon is also the capital of the Azores Islands, which sadly weren't mentioned in the video...

I don't know about Portugal's health system but I haven't come across a good doctor. I fell, I couldn't stand the pain in my hand and went to the doctor. An X-ray was taken. They said there was nothing crushed. You returned to your country and it was broken in 2 places. 1 year later, a pain I've never seen in my life. 2 days later I went to the doctor and they asked for an X-ray. I asked for an ultrasound and an MRI, they said no, the result could be gas, kidney stones. 🤔I returned to my country urgently. Both of my kidneys were blocked by stones and they had emergency surgery to remove them.

I watched this and enjoyed the visuals ,but it doesn't talk much about how Ex-Pats are really liking living in these places. I would really like to know about the banking system as I have watched other videos that say it's not great. I know I know only 20 minutes you can not do it all. But what makes this so attractive is the availability of VISAs to live there without insanely difficult requirements. But... so many videos reference bureaucracy problems. Thank you for making an excellent really enjoyable video.

Thank you for watching. We're not sure what aspect of the banking system people are saying "it's not great" but we don't have any major issues. There hasn't been a formal poll on these places among foreigners that live there and since people are different, we've tried to outline what's great about each place for individuals can make a decision if they might like it. - Josh & Kalie

Visited portugal fall 2023, We found that we loved the smaller towns in the north. why? while so so touristy they werent overloaded or well known to tourists or the typical seaside resort towns. as such accomodations were less expensive. Tomar ,Coimbra, Guimaraes were real gems. Porto was too busy, its bridges and downtown river area was nice but , very very touristy. It reflected in prices. Aviero , i felt a bit sorry for, while trying hard to give itself some pizzaz it just lacked any real draw at all. The beach was too far away for east access. If i had wheel to get the ocean nearby that

Aww, thank you! Both places are nice but have their flaws. I'm leaning towards saying Portimão over Setúbal because outside of the city center, it's not particularly nice and the city center does shutdown kind of early, however, if that's your cup of tea, then it's better than Portimão in that regard. - Josh & Kalie

@@ExpatsEverywhere For me its more of just a feeling. Aveiro, Coimbra and Fig.da Foz are equal distance from my "vacation home"(parents house) and I always visit all three when I'm there, but Coimbra with its University, the narrow streets of the Baixa and the overall history and architecture just feels like the Portugal I want my kids to see and love as much as I do. From a numbers point of view, you were right to include Fig da Foz @ 1,996euro, and Aveiro @ 2,084euro, but Coimbra for all it offers isn't that much more @ 2,138Euro/month.

Maybe we should have listened to your video before taking our decision. We have spending 5 weeks in Portimão (in the algarve region), first this city is very beautiful, great restaurants outside tourists center. This being said I would compare Portimão to Atlantic ciity with the noises and young crowd who comes at the beginning of school break and love to party and drink. Each night we are awakened by their shouting and noises. We rented a beautiful apartment near the beach but would never have thought the night life would have so nosy. Some people living here told us that the cities on the Atlantic side are very humid and it makes them feel even colder during the beginning of the year. Do you agree? Are all cities with beaches all noisy and have night life like in Portimão?
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 8 ай бұрын
Hi! No, Portimão is probably the "worst" for that. It's known to be that kind of destination. Humidity is a "problem" in many areas of Portugal not just cities and towns along the Atlantic. The interior of the country can be very wet and cold in the winter and hot and dry in the summer. Choose wisely as to what will fit your needs, wants, and desires. :-) - Josh & Kalie
