The RPM on any small engine with a non-adjustable/fixed high speed main jet carburetor (EPA regulations) should be set at 3,200 & not at 3,600. At 3,600, the carburetor will lean out too much & this could cause the engine run too hot, resulting in excessive piston ring wear & eventually it will start smoking out the exhaust, burning oil. Wintertime when the cold air is more dense is even worse for a leaned-out engine. I know this for a fact. The older small engines with a fully adjustable high speed main jet can be safely set at 3,600 RPM. And the horsepower rating for all small engines is figured at 3,600, and not at 3,200. (8hp @ 3,600 RPM = 7.1hp @ 3,200 RPM)

nonsense the carb will pull fuel correctly at 3600 rpm...just like any carb.

@@harryharry3193 I know what I'm talking about because I've personally seen the cylinder head burn out on several small engines that has a carburetor with a fixed main jet when it was running at 3,600 RPM. If it ran at 3,200 RPM, the head would not have burned out.

Thanks for the video. Is there a low speed jet under the little rubber plug that is behind that u shaped bracket? Sometimes there is and you can pull the rubber cap out and remove the jet to clean it. Also fully adjustable carburetor replacements are still available and fit perfectly. Thanks
@stefdriver3 жыл бұрын
Yes, at 1:30 you can see the little black cap on it below his screwdriver. Some people think it is a plug but the cap is just there so people don't attempt to "adjust" the jet. As you say it should be unscrewed and cleaned out or replaced (Tecumseh Idle Screw No. 640027) if the engine is not running smoothly.
@Budro47646 жыл бұрын
If it still does it with fresh gas you have a clogged port in there somewhere. When you were adjusting the idle at the last of the video is was going up and toooo much..... Great vid BTW Plus Tard Mon Ami ~!~!

Yes, it did go up but it came back down. I suspect the engine needed to warm up some more. After I turned the camera off, It evened out some more and runs great. With fresh gasoline, I also put some Seafoam in the tank. Thanks for watching.

I installed a new carb on my 9HP tecumseh. The only thing is has is the high and low idle screws on it. I keep getting a surging idle and it won’t restart after it’s running. Also seems to run a little smoother half choked. Think it’s just a cheap carburetor or does the governor need adjustment? I’ve also replaced the governor spring.
@RealManSkills2 жыл бұрын
Surging usually indicates that the carb needs more fuel. It is a sign of a dirty carb. It also can happen if an aftermarket carb doesn't have a big enough jet hole. Jet can be drilled out with a mini drill bit.

I just installed a new carb, and have the beast running but it seems to cut out after 60 secs at full throttle , could it be electrical? Thanks
@RealManSkills2 жыл бұрын
If a coil is going bad, it would cut out after warming up some. Check for spark when cold, then check for spark after it cuts out. If no spark, the coil is suspect. Thanks for watching.

I was told by a mechanic that you can no longer get carburetors and rebuild kits for tecumseh motors. Is this true??
@RealManSkills2 жыл бұрын
Tecumseh went out of business in 2008. However, I still order carb kits and and aftermarket carbs all the time from ebay, amazon, etc..
