When the quarantine cage is better and waaay bigger than the "good" cages I see in pet shops here in Brazil :c
@silversleeper11936 ай бұрын
The thumbnail looked so much smaller than the actual cage and I was a little worried 😅 Obviously this is smaller than generally needed, but much larger than my brain thought it was

its a quarantine cage not a permanent set up, it needs to be adequate but not perfect dimensions.

I foster pregnant cats and kittens, the one time I didn’t quarantine, of course both of my cats ended up sick 🤦♀️ I love that you are giving everyone their safe spaces and time to adjust to you and their new homes! 💕

The bedding ending up in the sand bath is such a mood. 😂😭 Been following you since before I got my first hamster in 2015, back when I still identified as a girl. It’s been amazing to have grown alongside you into the men we are today. 🏳️⚧️

A lovely setup! Coming from rat keeping where quarantine is much more the norm, I'd temporarily house new hamsters away from my other ones whenever possible. Plus you give a lot of great reasons for starting a hamster out in an enclosure like this.

The fact that this quarantine cage is nicer than some permanent hamster cage .. I looked this up because my hammy is sick and the vet told me to make a quarantine cage for him

I had a pregnancy scare with my last hamster. I adopted "him" from someone who kept two hamsters in the same cage. Going to assume the other one was also female because luckily no babies, but next time I'd definitely quarantine in that situation.

Would you believe these animals will be banned in my country as of July 1st?! 😢
@moda78z6 ай бұрын
Why?! Where?!
@iris1224wwad6 ай бұрын
@moda78z Netherlands. After July 1st, we're only allowed to keep 30 species of mammals as pets. (They intend to make such "positive lists" for birds, reptiles, etc, too). All species of dwarf hamsters will be banned. They say the determination of which animals are allowed was done very scientifically, but they really only used a checklist and books. No animal was actually studied. There are court cases, and they've tried twice before in the past decade, and then judges struck the list, but we're cutting it awfully close this time. There will be a transitional period in which you can keep the animals you already had before July 1st until the end of their lives. One of the reasons dwarf hamsters are banned is they are allegedly too dangerous for humans. The horse and waterbuffalo, animals that can kill you with a single kick, are allowed, though. There's a chance of overpopulation with dwarf hamsters, they say. But rabbits, mice, rats - which actually are social animals and no less fertile - are allowed. Dwarf hamsters need to be able to dig, they say. So do Syrian and Chinese hamsters, but you guessed it: they are allowed. I could go on for a while,it feels really random, but all in all, unless some judge in one of the court cases strikes this list, we will be in the ridiculous situation where people can keep a venomous snake, but not a dwarf hamster, because the hamster allegedly is too dangerous. 🤯 They claim it's also about animal welfare, but they're not banning those dreadful tiny cages...so it'll just be different species getting a miserable life in those. 😕

Which country and why ?
@iris1224wwad6 ай бұрын
@mousenation3867 Dang! I just posted a reply to Monana, and it was deleted... Next try then: Part 1: The Netherlands. This is the third attempt at a so- called "Positive List". The first two times, the lists were struck down in court. Hopefully that will happen this time, too, but we're cutting it awfully close. They say they will make similar lists for birds, reptiles, etc.
@iris1224wwad6 ай бұрын
@mousenation3867 Part 2 Allegedly, it's all very scientific, but it comes down to a checklist and books. No species were actually studied. Allegedly, it is in part about animal welfare, but those tiny, miserable cages that are unsuitable to house any species in, will not be banned. 🙄

I have made tons of those bin cages and id rather have somone who wants to get a hamster as a first pet, this is definitely the way to go! I HATE chain store pet shop hamster cages! They will sell you what ever they can and 99% of the time is not sutible for ANY HAMSTER! So why save your money on the cage and make a bin cage and save the money on the crap cage and use the money on suitable substrates and enrichment? Dear god i could practically make all things out of cardboard. And just please do your research! This bin enclosure is absolutely 10 times better then the overly priced unsuitable wire cages from the store!
