Absolutely, I am so glad it is not just a full on comedy but more an homage to 90s Trek with some comedy. And the comedy mostly comes from people just being people. Discovery is awesome as the Next Gen formula just doesn't work in 2017. That's why the Orville is a comedy - that's the only way you get get the slightly cheesy old style to work. Anyway, Discovery has been renewed which is good news for the more open minded, less nostalgic Trek fans.
@jonw79377 жыл бұрын
The Orville is not a comedy, it is Next Generation with some MacFarlane jokes thrown in here and there. Which is perfect, because for as much as I loved Next Gen, there were some pretty dry scenes.... and MacFarlane's jokes patches that awkwardness with a little bit of his humor. That's why it's so successful and well liked among real trek fans that appreciate what it was. Which proves your ridiculous notion of Next Gen formula not working in 2017 wrong. Discovery is like if the creators of Mortal Kombat decided to make another video game. Except this time it's a tower defense game instead of a fighting game. But then expects everyone to still like it even though it is completely different from it's original form just because it's a "Mortal Kombat" game... even though it really isn't. The only thing Discovery has in common with Star Trek is the name. You can't completely bastardize something and then expect fans of the original content to actually like it. The characters are terrible, there is rampant insubordination among officers and crew alike, there seems to be zero professionalism at times, and the only redeemable character was killed off in the second episode...
@jonw79377 жыл бұрын
Oh, and it has nothing to do with open-mindedness. It is completely changed, and they are trying to retcon half of the material. That's why 95% of Trek fans don't like the show man. And anyone who actually claims to be a trek fan and watches this garbage has never actually watched the shows.
@Tokiofritz7 жыл бұрын
Too much to disagree with, in there, and I can't be bothered going into detail. Both shows have been renewed. Let the Orvilles have their Orville and the rest of us can enjoy Star Trek Discovery.

Like Seth said, inspired by much of the early Sci-Fi. Even though many of the aesthetics are clearly Star Trek inspired, many other elements are clearly drawn from other classics such as Lost in Space, Buck Rogers, BattleStar Galactica, and even classic Dr. Who. Sometimes there are clear nods, while other times just elements of characters, stories, or even backdrops that have that eerie familiarity. Not that I have a problem with that at all. MacFarlane is doing nostalgia right; remind us of the wonders of the past, but press forward with a unique twist into the future!
