Was L More Sinister Than We Thought? - Death Note. In this video, we go over the entirety of Death Note lore to breakdown and analyze L Lawliet and his character and just how smart he really is. Did L actually consider Light Yagami his friend? Was he really a force of justice, or was he more sinister and evil than we thought?
[Includes lore and information for Death Note Manga and anime, Death Note: How to Read, The BB Investigation Novel, the File #15 Specials, and the L - Change the World novel]

I was pretty exhausted when I recorded this, but fits the video aesthetic eh? Anyway, who do you think was on the right side of history in the end? Q&A (Will Edit as more questions or contentions come up I think are important to talk about) Q. L didn't fall out of his chair because it confirmed his theories, he was only acting shocked, why did you say otherwise? A. In how to read, Truth 05, "Why does L believe Misa's message about Shinigami?" it describes that it did actually wrap up all of L's theories on the case, and that he was the one figuring everything out while everyone else was freaking out. Q. Why did you say Near was trying to take Light out due to a sense of pride? A. I'm referring to what both Near and Light refer to as "The Battle of Pride" between L and Light being continued. This scan is on the screen as I say it. As a bonus, in the Bonus Near manga chapter, the L Monsters scene is more direct. Where he says he doesn't do things for justice and so on. But the anime version was used simply for aesthetic purposes.

Kind of, but at some point, the premise would fall apart when applying it to someone who is not evil. This is not the case for L. He does a ton of morally ambiguous or outright wrong things supposedly for the greater good. When you apply the lense of evil intent to L, you can easily derive a consistently “evil” character from his own actions.

I think she was still selfish because even though this is what Misa wanted, Rem knew Misa was being kept alive to be a pawn and there was no way of knowing Light would’ve actually kept Misa alive. She knew Light’s intention and she is fool if she thought Misa’s safety was ever guaranteed. Killing someone trying to bring justice for someone who advocates death to all “bad” people (ironic) and kills them, is very selfish. She’d rather see Misa fake happy for a couple of months to only be murdered by Light anyway than to keep L alive to mitigate thousands of senseless deaths. I ended up resenting Rem. She didn’t even try to explain to Misa what Light was doing to her.
@JT5555
@JT5555 2 жыл бұрын
yes and no. rem wasn't a total sociopath like ryuk but she didn't care about anyone but misa and even then she ONLY cared about misa is because her friend sacrificed himself for her out of love so it's more to honor him than it is out of actually care. keep in mind that shinigami exist to take lives and that's it so being too selfless is against their very nature because the reason they take lives is simply to add it to their own and nothing else. in a way,all shinigami are created to be selfish and that includes rem.

Sometimes I wonder if Light would've even gone as extreme as he did were it not for pressure from L and company. The fact that L told Watari to delete all info on the Kira case upon his (or L's death) says a lot about L's mindset. When he says "I am justice" in a way he means If I win then I am right, If I lose then Kira is right. L is playing a game where if he loses then that means that the only person who could stop Kira couldn't, and because Kira is unstoppable then he is a god of death and deserves to have his way.

I’d like to clear up some things from this video. First, the characters of A and B are from Death Note spin-off books that were written after the original manga, by a different author. So, most DN fans do not consider these books to be canon. When the manga was written, the characters of A or B simply did not exist in the author’s mind, so L’s lack of action or thought about them isn’t a mark against him. Also, Watari’s orphanage was not portrayed as a particularly abusive or “torturous” place. And even if it was, you’d have to say that L was a victim of that “torture” as well since he was raised there. Second, the anime changed L’s character significantly and added some scenes. The foot washing scene can still be interpreted as submission to Light, because it was added in for the anime and may not reflect the original author’s intent. The “monster” monologue was also an anime addition. When you just consider the primary canonical sources, the manga and anime, L is not nearly as evil as Light. Yes, he has a big ego and is willing to do whatever it takes to completely solve a case, but like the author said, this only makes him “slightly evil.” He actually does show remorse too, just go back to the scene where Ukita dies and look at his reaction, where he looks shaken and horrified at what has happened. He also set up a fund to take care of the Task Force members’ families if they died on the case.

I disagree with your perception of L not having emotions. I also disagree with your perception of Light. You're completely right that both of these characters lie and manipulate the truth for their own purposes, but both of their fatal flaw is that they can't keep it straight and even end up lying to themselves. Their rivalry IS a friendship, and they're both too caught up lying to understand the truth for themselves. L brushes this off as a way of manipulating Light, and Light does the same in the opposite way explicitly stating that he doesn't care about L's friendship. The truly paradoxical thing is that if they're always lying, then they must lie to themselves as well. At some point their "game" becomes so complex that they begin to tell "half lies." Half-lies that contain the truth so as to be more believable. There's a great quote from the movie Lawerence of Arabia: "A man who tells lies merely hides the truth, but a man who tells half-lies has forgotten where they put it." Their inability to hold onto the truth while playing this game is what grounds their humanity in what would otherwise make their "perfect" characters truly "divine." But instead they are "only human," since they can't keep it straight. The best example of this is when Light and Misa relinquish the DeathNotes. There is no better example of characters lying to themselves than this, and L descends with Light because he knows that Light upped the stakes. I'm not sure about Near though, its been quite a while since I watched the show, and I don't have evidence to suggest that he follows a different path from L/Light. DeathNote has more in common with Macbeth than it does with Julius Caesar. They don't do what actually needs to be done and are haunted by it--instead they descend into madness (each in their own way), by only telling lies.

Based on L's mannerisms, I think it's very likely that L has aspergers. The similarities between L and Light are highlighted throughout the series, but I see distinct differences between them. Often in real life, to the uninformed observer the obvious symptoms of aspergers can resemble psychopathy, despite the conditions being polar opposites. People with aspergers have low cognitive empathy, yet high amounts of emotional empathy, and low cognitive empathy translates to difficulty expressing or interpreting emotions. Often people with autism must make a conscious effort to express their emotions in a way people understand, though this by no means suggests a lack of emotions internally. In fact, the key difference between a person with aspergers and a psychopath is that the former actually has emotional empathy that exceeds a normal person. This means that though they may have difficulty recognizing what someone is feeling without it being made explicit, when do recognize another person's emotional state state, they empathize with them strongly. I think L is not a person who bothers trying to express what he's feeling throughout most of the series. However, moments such as when one of the task force got killed outside the TV station by Misa, and L's hands started shaking, really stuck out to me. My interpretation was that while Light has very little capacity for self reflection, L is critical of himself. He compares himself to Kira by saying he's also childish and hates to lose. L has flaws, but the the fact that he can aknowledge them makes him wiser than Light. Light would never call himself childish, even though it's evidentally true. L tests people and manipulates even the task force at times, but I do sincerely think he appreciated them. When Aizawa wanted to leave and told L he hated him, I think L really meant it when he said he liked Aizawa. When L silently visited Watari in the middle of the night, having felt his death approaching, it conveyed a sense vulnerability. Though the "Death Note" series isn't much interested in exploring the emotional spectrum of its characters other than in ways that can be exploited the plot, these little flashes are enough to aullude to a character with a lot more emotional depth than Light. Light is a truer example of a sociopath. While some of Light's morals seemed somewhat conventional, such as "committing crime is wrong", his world veiw lacked any nuance or situational distinction. You were either good or evil. I think he assimilated a lot of the motifs of his father's morality without really understanding their substance. There's a distinction between accepting things as gospel and actually thinking about issues on individual basis, and light is so blinded by himself and what he considers the big picture that he doesn't care to think in terms that small at all.

Is there any reason as to why L can’t be cold, calculating and “slightly evil” while also being goofy and loveable? There are several characters like that and I think he qualifies perfectly. Edit: okay, so I came back here a year later just to let anyone who still cares at this point know I have changed my opinion on L as a character and also on Deathnote as a whole, however, I still think my initial point still stands as it's really all down to personal opinion what you consider to be loveable.

L even commented himself that the reason he was able to anticipate Kira’s actions so well is because they think alike. I guess he could have just meant “we’re both smart”, but I never took it to mean anything that simple. Although, I do think L meant it when he said Light was his first friend. Of course L hates Light to a degree, but Light gave L a bigger challenge than anyone ever had, he was exciting, and his mindset was familiar to L in a way he probably didn’t see often, if ever. I think L just defines “friend” a little differently than most people. But I’m sure he felt a sort of kinship with Light that he could conceivably define as friendship.

When I saw the scene in the rain I viewed it as L mocking Light for thinking he was some sort of higher power. I genuinely laughed at the thought honestly. And I must say, after thinking more about L's character and how stoic, focused, intelligent, and astounding he was I began to respect his actions, whether they be morally correct or not. I respect him, even though his pride. I understand what it's like for someone to stubbornly want to be the winner, everyone does. He was someone who was able to accomplish just that by using his vastly superior intellect. Though I could talk about L for hours, I chose to limit my comment to a small paragraph being that it's likely that it will go unread. Oh well, I had fun writing it. XD

@@Empire_11I may not be able to convince you, but I will certainly try. In the Death Note universe, there is no afterlife. This was confirmed by both Ryuk in the manga and in the anime with the How to Use it segments. Although in English, the syntax is a bit of. The original Japanese makes it sound more like "The place where humans go after they die; it's Mu.". In this case, it means that they don't go anywhere, because there is nowhere for them to go. The very idea that death is final is integral to the story, as the author made a point to ensure that there was no way to avert the death once it was written in the note. That is also why the Death Erasure from Chapter 0/the original pilot chapter with Taro Kagami was scrapped. "You only get one life, so it's up to you to make the most of it." Is iirc what the author said, albeit with slightly different wording. The Shinigami World is, likewise, a redundant dimension. Ultimately a pointless one at that. Humans die regardless of the Death Note, and regardless of the presence of the Shinigami. There is no rhyme or reason for their existence. Between there being no reason for the existence of Shinigami and that Death is Final in the Death Note Universe, it makes absolutely zero sense for Light to become a Shinigami. Not only does this violate the Death is Final theme, but this also defeats the nihilism inherent in the Shinigami world.

I think L shows a lot of emotion. It can be encapsulated in one scene. He shows visceral sadness and disappointment when he makes the bell analogy, because Light doesn't understand him, and even if he did, he wouldn't admit it. Then he wipes his foot as a gesture of loss and respect because he knows he was beaten and is about to die at the hands of the only man he ever respected as an intellectual, which I do actually believe became a friendship as he got to know a version of Light that wasn't a manipulator. That scenes imagery also conveys a religious context; kissing feet or bowing to them, or cleaning, is a Christian way of showing respect to God. The only "true way" to communicate with possessed Light's ego, which is why it makes him uncomfortable; he sees right through him. The cross and the bells combined with stained glass facilitates this. I don't think the drying scene was an appeal to stay alive. I think it was saying, "I know my actions are going to lead to my death, when I try to test the rule I deem fake." It was resolve and respect trying to be conveyed honestly. "Have you ever once in your life told the truth?" Of course L is a manipulator. The point of the show is moral ambiguity. Edit: They're both radical, but the intended read and watch is, possessed Light is evil, and intellectual extremist L is just. The color palettes are pretty on the nose as well, though that may be a silly connection.

I always knew L wasn’t a “good” person, I saw him as a machine, that’s programmed to love only the thrill of completing a puzzle and will do anything to get that thrill. I saw Light as more of a Fallen angel kind of person, he’s reasons and feelings started out innocent enough, he wanted to make the world a better place, but over time the power got to him and he was slowly twisted into a crazy man with a god complex, still in the end a little bit of light shined through from time to time unlike L who never had a hint of actually love or emotions

L is an extremely interesting character the more you break him down. While I do somewhat more so agree with the author’s opinion that L is a more righteous character than Kira, it’s still true that all characters in death note, even L live in a world of gray, as to say things aren’t just black-and-white in terms of morality. Although many of the acts that L commits are rather disturbing, I’d still argue that he puts more ethical thought into his choices than light. For example the prisoner L sacrificed in the beginning of the series, was already up for execution, and if he survived he would’ve been granted freedom. L could’ve used an actor, but instead chose to use someone who was already going to die. I feel as though Light is much more likely to sacrifice innocent people than L is, that being said, If an innocent person did get hurt in the wake of L’s investigation, I hardly doubt he would lose much sleep over it. I do think that near’s motivation of just wanting to solve the case and not so much caring about the ethics of things is similar to L, but I’d also argue that L was more than the cold calculating person near is. People often seem to forget that Near didn’t solve the case alone, it was only through the intervention of Mello that near was able to solve the case. Mello sacrifices himself in order to stop Light and solve the case, which although can still be seen as prideful, it’s also probably one of the most morally selfless things we seen in the series. I bring this up because near and mello are portrayed to be the 2 sides of L. Near Being Logical and Mello being emotional, this is supported by the fact that not only do each of them portray similar quirks to L, Such as mello’s fondness of sweets and Near’s constant fidgeting, but also by the fact that near stated that it took both of them coming together to stand beside L, and even surpass him.

L explained it best himself when he told everyone he is childish and stubborn. He has the moral development of a child with the intellect of a god. In my opinion, he had or still has some traumatic experience with his excessive training from the orphanage, possibly leading to his weird perverted and criminal-like way. He just fits with the TvTropes of Heroic Jerks/Perverte/Criminals and Grey Zone that would make him an overall Anti-Hero and an Antagonist Hero fighting against the Villain Protagonist Light Yagami is like the Anti-Villain or just a Villain who could be the Protagonist at the same time like in the other tropes with Villains who are Protagonist on countless storylines.
