A friend of mine and I were recording a song years ago using a small amp I had. We listened to the playback and noticed a blip that shouldn't be there. Heh, I used to have a small and cheap amp where when electric guitar was plugged in and volume was turned to max I was able to listen radio somewhat well :D
@railgap3 жыл бұрын
That's the negative feedback loop and / or foldback protection circuits in the amp. Any junction (diode, transistor) can act as an RF "detector" (AM), and that modulated signal then gets inverted and fed back into the front of the amp, where it gets amplified along with the desired input signal. It's quite common, especially with so many illegal linear amps in the CB world. (they are the bane of amateur radio operators operating near 10meters)

@photios47793 жыл бұрын
Yup. I'm of the opinion there is merit to the "rare Earth" hypothesis, which refers to the conditions suitable for producing a planet where a sentient species is able to evolve being extraordinarily rare. Considering the truly immense size of this universe, "they" are probably out there somewhere. But the odds that any particular stellar system hosts a planet with an advanced civilization may be somewhere in the range of one in a trillion. We may very well be alone in our galaxy, at least at the present moment in time. At any rate, if our galaxy were full of other advanced civilizations, then one has to ask why our planet hasn't already been colonized in the nearly 4.5 billion years it has existed? The fact our solar system appears to be untouched by any alien presence in all that vast span of time implies that others aren't anywhere nearby.

@yeroca3 жыл бұрын
@@rolandthethompsongunner64 another obvious answer is that the nearest civilization is too far away to have its signal exceed the noise floor of the universe, at least to our current radio receivers. Also we don't really know where (in frequency) to look and when. And who knows, maybe advanced civilizations abandon EM waves after they figure out how to use neutrinos or gravity waves to transmit across interstellar space. Or maybe they use some phenomena that we don't even know exists. So the search space is huge and our "listening" tools are not really up to the task yet.
When you connect something to USB, the apparatus gives an identity-code, a manufacturer or a serial-number. The same goes for mobile phones, when switched on they identify themselves to the network. Anton, may I interject for a moment? At some point, we may detect a signal from a non-inhabitable system that _can't_ be explained _in any way_ as a 'natural' signal. What do we do with _that?_ My fear is that given our present 'understanding,' we will discard the signal. _We could be ignoring a signal that could be a probe present in that system sent from a different system._ Basically think of it like this. Earth sends a probe to Proxima Centauri - a system we're _certain_ couldn't have an indigenous sentient civilization. But a civilization from say, Alpha Centauri, is closely watching Proxima Centauri and sees signals from our probe. Rather than wonder if that signal could be a probe from elsewhere, they ignore it because there's no way Proxima Centauri could support an advanced civilization, and fail to realize that they are seeing a signal from another space-faring civilization located somewhere else.

If the signal has Doppler shift, then it has to be from an orbiting satellite rather than a geo-synchronous one. It should be possible to estimate the orbital speed from the amount of frequency shift over time. Some satellite that transmits signals 928MHz apart, or possibly some sub-multiple of 928MHz, would be one to generate the signal. It sounds a little like GPS, GLONASS, or some other positioning service that transmits a civilian and military signal at the same time, on two different frequencies. I guess you'd only need a minute amount of IM to be received by a huge radio telescope antenna.

This is a cover-up. The Doppler shift can't be explained away as harmonic interference - it was detected for hours! any satellite would be on the other side of the planet way before that - it would be impossible that the strength of the signal didn't change at all. Modern radio gear doesn't drift like that - especially given a frequency this high? would require very professional equipment. And finally? if it was a human signal? signals are used for a REASON - why isn't it modulated? where's the data it's carrying? are we to believe that sensitive radio-telescopes that can listen to rovers on the surface of mars - couldn't detect any modulation in a signal that was coming from the same planet?

And before anybody says it? Geostationary satellites have no doppler shift - the clue is in the 'stationary' part. This stinks of being hastily covered up.

@@JohnnyWednesday I wonder if amateur radio astromers could monitor the region of Proxima Centaurus and subsequently detect-- and record -- a modulated carrier, that can pass the initial requirements for a high RIO SCALE rating? Any publicity of such an event, or series of such events, would catch on like the gold rush hysteria of the 19th century.

@Cancer McAids - Those are some very good points, thank you! - but a long period orbiter? to stay within the receiving cone for that long? to my knowledge we don't use orbits further out than geostationary for earth facing systems - they'd orbit slower than the rotation of the planet - not as useful as faster or the same rate. And that shift was significant - I do a lot of amature radio work - one thing I do specifically? is receive images from a couple of different types of weather satellite. Those signals do shift because of Doppler - but they are also very obviously not shifting by a constant rate - as their position above the earth changes in relation to my antenna? they appear to move at different speeds. I see no reason why this hypothetical orbiting object wouldn't also display a clear change in the rate of 'drift' - over such a timescale. Plus the fact that it kept station for many, many hours? How could it possibly be an object that would stay within the lobes for that length of time - suggesting a near geostationary orbit - yet display such a high doppler?
@JohnnyWednesday3 жыл бұрын
@Cancer McAids - "and finally" (sorry) the 'receiving cone' of such a radio telescope? is quite tight! that's a relatively small space for an orbiting object to stay within for that long - over many different nights! if it were a slow orbiter? the following night? if it's higher than geostationary orbit? it can't complete an orbit in 24 hours - ergo it wouldn't be at the same point in the sky. This happened over months too! - we're saying it's so close to geostationary as to stay at the same spot in the sky for weeks - but still fast enough in relation to us to show a clear Doppler? the two - at least to my mind - make no sense together.

Intermodulation sounds like a phenomenon musicians can create by playing a root note and singing its fifth while playing. The result creates the third Interval,and it makes a major chord.

I heard a story 20 yrs. ago about SETI receiving part of an I Love Lucy episode that had been broadcasted 50 years earlier. ... The story concluded that the signal had reached a super massive high energy object 25 light years away that bounced it back to Earth.. ... I have NO IDEA if this story is true but it's a COOL story either way.

What happened to publication regarding BLC1? The media were saying at the beginning of 2021 that two papers would be published very soon, such as March or April 2021. One paper would present the detailed signal analysis answering all contemporary questions about signal characteristics; the other presenting the philosophy applied to differentiate extraterrestrial origin or not. Seeing 963 comments in 2 days reveals that lots of people want the facts disclosed, and have not forgotten about the event. Nearly everyone agrees that the signal was/is very valuable for exercising our vigilance in SETI because it forced us to ask hard and new questions like never before.

I was wondering what this turned out to be, but figured it would turn out to be something mundane just because it was taking so long for them to make any kind of announcement about it at all after the media made such a big deal about it nearly a year ago.

but how does intermodulation explain the doppler shift that we saw in the signal?
