Why do scientist assume the Wow signal should repeat if it was sent by ETs? When humans sent out the Arecibo message, we sent it once. It didn't repeat. Why should we assume ETs will do it differently?

"Impossible" is going a bit too far. Clearly, any physicist or astronomer involved in SETI is capable of doing the math to determine how strong a signal from another system or galaxy would need to be to be detectable by the time it reaches us. And they persist in their efforts, suggesting that it is entirely possible. Certainly, it would require an extremely powerful signal if it originated in a distant galaxy. Some Fermi Paradox solutions involve the idea that it's just not a high priority for distant civilizations to send out signals and the budget for such projects is hard to come by.

Your comment that sending a signal to the stars cited here and getting a response would take 3,000 to 4,000 years seems to be the main reason for not finding other intelligent life. Consider what our technology on earth was like 3,000 years ago. That would be about 1,000 years BCE. Radio communication became possible here about 120 years ago. Life may be out there, and probably is. But the expanse of the universe makes even communication almost impossible. Consider how long it takes for JPL to communicate with the Voyager space craft. They are just to the edge of the Solar System. Even communicating with the nearest star system would take a signal more than 8 years to be sent and answered.

Why do people think 1.4ghz is bad? Plus ever hear of propagation and attenuation? The further it has to travel means it has many things that would convert it or distort it. But if you originally blast it from a very powerful source, with encoding and wave form guides… it resists these changes over distances. Again highlighting an origin of intelligence. Not just a star or ship

Fermi Paradox is just a reflection that intelligent life is not only rare, but is incredibly short-lived even here. We have about a 100 year window of producing low-power transmissions that quickly die out in strength to be less than the background noise in our galaxy within days. 100 years out of 4.5 billion. Days vs. Light-years.

I always felt that using radio waves to communicate over long distances in space between species would be like trying to use carrier pigeons to communicate across the Atlantic ocean, a fools errand (and yes I know carrier pigeon across an ocean has actually happened before, but rarely, which makes my analogy still fit vs-a-vis radio waves). My bet is on some form on 'Quantum Internet (Galactinet?)' that we'll discover once we figure out quantum mechanics in an applicable form (aka able to actually build a 'quantum interstellar radio').

@KnightspaceORG

For communication yes, but we want to detect radio waves from a civilization because of a presumption that a sufficiently advanced alien species would either send those signals to serve as beacons, a sign "we are here", in a relatively simple way or those waves would be a side effect of advancement, like it happened on Earth
@gravoc857
@gravoc857 Жыл бұрын
@@KnightspaceORG Yes, but this assumption only works for civilizations at our point of development. If a more advanced species doesn’t use radio, and is also looking for a similarly advanced species. We won’t detect them. We have to consider all avenues of beaconing, both known and unknown. Stuff such as physically obfuscating a star, green-tinting a star, neutrino communication, gravitational wave communication, and cutting edge stuff that we haven’t even yet imagined or discovered.
@KnightspaceORG
@KnightspaceORG Жыл бұрын
@@gravoc857 Yeah, i don't think a species wouldn't use radio waves at all. It's not only a method of communication, through them we can observe stellar phenomena invisible in frequencies we can perceive. It's only fair to think that a space faring species would know the significance of those frequencies and use them in SOME way.

We still seem to remain bias to our own conditions of life and our planet/solar system, it's a good bet that other life exists with similar conditions to us, however, if we continue to look only for that we may come up empty handed. With our little understanding of how life even formed on our planet, how are we to judge how it may have formed on other planets. We seem to fundamentally search for the same thing over and over and expect a different result. If radio signals are found everywhere in nature, is it really the best form of long distance communication? It'd be good to have some scientists that think outside the box on SETI. Keep up the great vids Anton!

Your rationale at the end is valid and actually is scientific, insomuch as our science presently knows. A touch rephrased: we know of one civilization in the Universe, and it did not use the hydrogen wavelength to communicate a message from concerted and presumably serious efforts to reach out. So that is indeed a scientific statement.

Anton, I am an engineer in the field of communication. As we advance, we are focusing more on local wireless communication. We accomplish this by shifting communication frequency higher and higher to reduce propagation distance hence improving the capacity. In addition, our modulation algorithm is making the transmit signal look like background noise. These advances happened during the last 10~20 years. I can't imagine what our communication devices will look like in the next twenty years from now. The fact that SETI is searching for radio signals doesn't make sense to me. We are searching for signs of radio waves that have developed for the last century, whereas intelligent life can be centuries or millennia ahead of us. And if intelligent life is a few hundred years behind us, then there is no radio signal from that intelligent life that we can detect.

The hydrogen line is important because the universe has a lot of hydrogen so radio astronomy listens there. Most natural objects broadcast in broad bands including those comets. Most scientists in the field never really considered those comets as a serious explanation for the WOW signal because if I'm not mistaken was a narrow band transmission. I believe that is the reason many are intrigued by the WOW. A very strong narrow band that appears to have come from space.

I was disappointed in this video at several points. At 3:20 he says the maximum they could record was U, but as you point out the maximum was Z. At 3:40 he said another radio telescope was pointed at the same area, but it was a separate receiver of the same telescope which was pointed slightly to the side. At the picture at 6:14 it shows the two very narrow windows in red, where the separate receivers were pointing. At 7:40 he asks why we don't broadcast at the hydrogen line frequency, if it is such a logical frequency that aliens might be using it. But he already answered that at 1:45 when he said there are frequencies reserved for radio astronomy, and broadcasts are not allowed there.

This ‘wow!’ signal is endlessly fascinating, thank you, Anton. I made a very modest contribution, by way of a donation, to the SETI all sky laser search project, as I think it is more reasonable to look far closer to home, for signs of an advanced extra-terrestrial civilisation, and to endeavour to discover, and to communicate, at a more reasonable distance. Even the closest galaxy to ours, M31, an amazing sight optically, on a clear, dark night, is still a staggering two and half million light years away.
