Great video! We wanted to come down to the James and fish for Blue cats. Wanted to know what the law is on Gill Nets in the James around the Hopewell area?? Wanted to get a Gill Net but not sure on what size to get for Gizzard Shad. You have any suggestions ?? Thanks PopPop

I'm not seeing anything regarding use of gill nets in freshwater in VA according to the DWR regulations. Can you point me in the right direction as to where you found this info?

You can only use them in tidal rivers

@@GooberTimeGuideService Is this new? Permit application says City of VA Beach in Back Bay and natural tributaries and that you can only use it Nov 1st-March 31st. Unless you're going off of the MRC regulations which says you have to be downstream of Hog Point if you're on the James.

Hey brother I have some questions to ask I want to do the same exact thing but I have some things to ask

Make sure you're allowed to use a gill net in your state. Most states don't allow it but we're allowed in VA on tidal waters only and a special permit must be purchased

@@GooberTimeGuideService yes sir same here only for a certain amount of time and if your on the reservation and a band member I think it lasts like a week or two more what I thought was funny is I have been calling the dnr here in Minnesota and they don't seem to have a clue on what a native American guidelines are beings are treaties are in place they don't know if it's legal for me to make a gil net that drops lower than 6 feet also how close can I drop that net close to river mouths but I need to find the conservation officer because the office and the fisheries can't answer any of my questions I've done it as a kid with my dad but back than they didn't regulate much at all

They only told me I can't sell the I guess better fish like walleye and bass but I can sell the whitefish also the tulipee but I also was wondering if I targeted those fish and find there schools with a vexlar and net them I wonder if that's possible from a peddle kayak can I find radar that's able to identify that school like I'm really getting into this

I noticed you got and old town sportsman. I'm fishing the James also, in a Bonafide with a drop in motor mounted in the dry pod. I've been considering the Old Town 106 or 120. You have any pros or cons now that you fished from one. I'm really interested in the spot lock to keep from anchoring. Is it that good? How does it do in the heavy current on the james?

I have the 106mk, which is not a spotlock boat. It has a 45 lb trolling motor seamlessly integrated into the cockpit. I fish out of my PA14 do the 106mk is for sale. It was the girls boat and she never uses it so it has to go. Hit me up if you are interested. I think I can promise you is that spotlock does not replace an anchor. Spotlock is great and has it's place but if you're trying to traditional anchor fish with spotlock on, you'll be throroughly disappointed

For starters, make sure they’re legal in your state. Most don’t allow them. If it is legal, you likely need a special permit/license for it and depending on your regulations, you’ll need to buy a net that fits your states regs. That being said, I buy mine from the website nets & more

Hey Shawn can I ask what state your in I'm also gonna do that same exact thing little different tho because I'm native American and we can use gil nets on the reservation and we can sell the fish to who ever anyway I have a few more questions I kinda learned this on a bigger scale I'm Dutch harbor those natives have sea treaties and we have inland treaties and all those natives still feed there families through old techniques I also know how to do this through my dad and plan on making a KZbin channel out of it amongst using my pedal drive kayak for ricing season another native harvest that is lucrative and with a mirage drive system I don't need to pay half my rice in worth to my partner so win win

I have a few I use. Anything from 50ft to our max of 100ft. I prefer floating, you can always add weight to sink it
