Custom EQ on the headunit you can add or decrease db at different frequency on your pioneer 80prs
@GuitarHeroGage4 жыл бұрын
The main use for bass boost is for head units and LOC's that don't provide enough pre-out (RCA) voltage. For example: Your head unit full tilt only puts out .4V at 40hz, but your amp only accepts .5V or higher, you can use the bass boost on the amp or head unit to amplify that .4V to get your desired gain on the amp. I've used it many times setting up systems with trash headunits because people don't want to replace them. My buddies JVC head unit would do .4V, with the gain maxed you would only get 15V on the speaker outputs on his Skar RP2k, when we set it to 6db bass boost, it was able to get to the desired 44.7V easily at around 3/4 gain with a clean wave, if the amp is made by a reputable company, they do a good job of keeping the wave relatively clean in that situation. But I HIGHLY recommend having an o-scope, because the signal can easily clip.

I noticed a MASSIVE difference in the bass extension and clarity of the bass after I set my bass boost to the 12 o'clock. I have a 12 year old MTX RFL600D that I bought for my first car and it plus a single 12" would vibrate my mirror down with no bass boost (but I used the remote level so I guess I did technically) Years have passed and this amp has been in 2 other vehicles And I lost the remote level control. No matter what I did to the head unit I could never replicate the performance from my first system. Now its +6db and sounds as good as I remember. This amp has no business living this long, but it just eats up the power.

Because a lot of guys tune their amp wrong when actually the radio head unit has the worst clipping points. 🤣🤷♂️ if you tune every thing and never turn your head unit volume level to high to the clipping points you should have no problem turning everything else up and just get a bass knob for your amp and there's your gain for your amp and speaker right up front with you. 👍 my radio clips and max out at levels 34 and up on the volume so I set my amps and everything at my head unit volume at 25-32 max, and any song and any type of music plays clear and clean on my system. 👍 remember your system is only gonna sound as good as your volume control and levels on your head unit, if your head unit clips everything wired to it is gonna clip. 🤷♂️👍

I think the use of boost is almost enclosure-dependent. So my understanding is that bass boost on my JL JX1000/1D only increases gain on a curve around 45 hz. So I'd treat this like an EQ where I turn down gain as I turn up bass boost. I have a 10" Dayton sub in a small ported box of around .87cf. In this situation the boost is almost necessary to EQ out the lower bass that is lost with the smaller enclosure. If you have a giant box like yours, boost is superfluous.

Can i chime in as a music producer. We typically cut in the bass area. Like in all actuality before mastering we cut the bass to about -9db. To allow for headroom. Because the most energy is in the bass spectrum. So really you can set your bass to negative whatever. Then adjust your bass boost. You're leaving out most hu just have bass mid highs. That's alot of bass spectrum to control with just bass level. To tell you something about eq... there is actually sub bass, bass, low mids mid high and highs. Your SUB frequencies are roughly 30-80. Sub frequencies are felt n more then heard.

Bass boost is actually very useful for what it is intended for. It increases gain at very specific and limited frequencies. If you are willing to give up some amplitude on all other bass frequencies in order to increase amplitude for the specific bass boost frequency then by all means use it. It will give you increased bass for that limited frequency range. However, most people wouldn’t want the very peaky bass response that bass boost gives you. Therefore, they would turn this setting off. If you are going to utilize bass boost then you absolutely MUST set your gains with the bass boost turned on.

A an audio engineer, we use thousands of dollars in equipment and acoustic treatments to deliver the most accurate representation of what the sound is in the studio as we can. This includes ACCURATE and flat low frequency response, usually to below 30hz depending on the music. You should try to equalize that 40hz peak down to as close to flat as you can recognizing that the car structure is causing it to peak artificially. This is why so many cars, when you listen outside have that "one note" bass thump, thump. That's not accurate reproduction or being true to the artists desires. You will never hear this in a studio control room or in a properly set up live concert system. Your HI Fi has just become Lo Fi-delity.

As said in the video, I think bass boost becomes an issue usually when trying to get the most out of the system (high bass boost, volume and gain). It seems to me that it is all about knowing your system's capabilities and making sure that you balance the three different kinds of volumes (the bass boost, gain, and the regular volume).

using bass boost on the amplifier and cranking the lows in the head units EQ is awesome and I recommend cranking it up on both as the starting point....BUT....you need to do it correctly, you need to tune your system with all of that on, basically what I am trying to say is when you're tuning it and checking for clipping and getting it locked in make sure you got everything you might use cranked on, what is cool about this is if you want to use your system in the early morning and don't want a ton of bass or during quiet times all you need to do is turn down bass boost on the amp or set the head unit EQ to flat, if you wanna play it loud for bass boomin or show someone what it is capable of simply just turn it all back up to it's "original" tune/full bass boost. The reason it gets shit on so hard is because people tune their systems with it all set to off or "flat" and then randomly one day they try turning up bass boost or raising the lows in the head unit EQ without tuning it to that and it starts clipping and getting all messed up.

Hmm… people won’t use bass boost but they’ll happily tell you that you need a parametric equalizer to flatten your frequency response. Guess what - they’re the same! All bass boost is doing is amplifying a range of frequencies. Provided that your gain is set appropriately to ensure there’s no clipping Play a 200hz sine wave and set your gain to avoid clipping. Use an oscilloscope. Now play a 50hz test sine wave. Does it have a lower peak-peak amplitude? Sure it does because your stock amp is probably rolling off low frequencies to protect the crappy stock speakers. Now how to boost the 50hz amplitude without clipping on the 200hz signal? You need to boost just the lower frequencies using bass boost. Add bass boost until your 40hz signal is the same amplitude as the 200hz signal and not clipping. Now double check that your 200hz signal is still clean. If it isn’t you can turn down the gain just a little - it shouldn’t need much. Congratulations - you have used bass boost to compensate for low frequency toll off of your head unit. Your bass should sound more accurate because your frequency response is flatter - which is what everyone is trying to achieve with dsp parametric equalizers.

All the videos I have watched say no bass boost but then what is bass boost for and what is the right way to use it? What I gather from this video is bass boost can boost the bass at lower volume levels but if you crank the volume up it can clip the amp (if gains are not re-adjusted after setting bass boost), in which case why not use bass boost for lower volume levels and if you crank the volume up reduce the bass with the bass knob?

It's sad to hear folks critic a functional and purposeful knob simply because they don't know when to use it. Firstly, amps are built to deliver and speakers are built to handle. All of us here can agree that mids and coaxial will clip when bass is introduced that's why we mostly cross them higher with no bass at most; right, the same is true with subwoofers, a 1000rms rated sub for e.g may clip as opposed to a 2500rms rated subwoofer when bass boost is set to a desired level. Essentially bass boost works on subwoofers that can handle it, in my experience a genuine 2000rms or higher. Suddenly a good subwoofer will sound like it's got a company of another producing a tonne of smooth bass output

Who in the actual fizuck has 2500 watt RMS subs? Aint nobody pushing that many ROOT MEAN SQUARE watts through a speaker in their vehicle. I have a couple of JBL 1000w MAX (like 300 rms?) Subs that will make you do a double take to make sure donkey kong didn't just punch you in the chest. I'm not saying it's impossible. Just improbable and impractical. Unless you drive around wearing a pressure resistant suit for disarming bombs and shit. 2500 watts at 12v is over 200 amps. So you're either melting cables or you've got wire bigger than the 4/0 used on a 200A residential main electrical service entrance. And given that you do, what about the batteries/alternator? And that's just power issues. All of which will be irrelevant when the entire vehicle vibrates completely apart halfway through song "put on" by Young Jeezy Damn Jeezy....I need an inflatable car to listen to your shit at an appropriately absurd level of obnoxious. 2500 u say? Rms you say? I'm down. Let's tear some shit up

id be very interested to know how you determined by this test that bass boost makes the soundwave dirty as you called it. You dont have an oscilloscope so you dont have any way to know for sure what the waveform is that the speakers and subwoofer is getting. Clipping and dirty waveform are not the same thing. Clipping is caused by your amplifier running out of headroom and the amp cant output enough power to create the whole sine wave so it clips. Clipping is easier with bass boost on because you need more power because the bass is louder but it is not the cause of bass boost on a properly installed sized and adjusted system.

Its hits harder bass at lower volumes. The louder I turn up the clearer the words but bass isn't as tough. If I keep everything Flat I have 2 turn up 2 30 and still don't get the clarity and bass I get at lower volumes. So I assume it personal preference and or what your running. I have a boss double din, and an Audio pipe 15 in a side port box, I had a 1000 watt boss riot amp I blew up. My back up I had was an eclipse 200 or 400 watt amp. 1st day i blew the 20 amp fuse, put in a 30 amp fuse and this bangs hard. I bought an Audio Pipe 1500 watt amp but haven't got it put in yet. Question 2: I have 2 stock speakers behind my head and upgraded speakers in the kick panel with my sub centered behind the front seats (98’ Silverado) should/could I connect my aftermarket kick panel speakers to my amp with the sub and use them as amplified mids and put my stock head level speakers in high pass and use them as highs? Then the sun in low pass and dial that in after my heat unit is EQ’ed?
@JacobViral2 Жыл бұрын
Set head unit, then amps. Your power watts vs. sub will do fine. I would use a 2/4 channel separate amp for upgraded speakers, sub amps don’t go on speakers.

my head unit is quite old, it has a 5 band eq, i set band 1 and 2 as low as they can go -10, that way my two old mids that run off the head unit directly don't distort until very close to max volume, and i'm hoping that helps clean up the signal to my amps too. my amp tho, the "bass boost" is like a volume knob, all the way down turns the amp off, and around 50% is as loud as it gets, past that it doesnt get louder so i'm assuming it's clipping so i never go that high. i have it at about 25% now and it's not as loud as it can be but i feel a lot more confident that it wont be clipping like that

It’s a gimmick for teens and newbies . The company’s don’t care if you ruin your speakers/subwoofers they just want to sell product. But it’s your money do what you want with it. Use bass boost even though 95% of audio professionals don’t even know why amp makers put it on there amps.
@akuma4u4 жыл бұрын
@@workingclassperson2124 there is a need and use for bass boost. For eq purposes. Often people tune their boxes way too low and the 45hz region needs a lift. The bass boost dials on mostly all amps is a 45hz frequency with 6 to 12db of gain. Using this for eq purposes is common and many people do it to bring more balance to their bandwidth. Of course, it must be used usually 5db or less or else it can induce clipping quick.

Its recommended to leave it at 0 so people dont blow their systems. If tuned right, bass boost can fix many systems safely thats lacking bass. Why does your system lack bass? Because your head unit did not have a subwoofer rca output, this is the case with most line out converters. The bass boost can be tuned with a oscilloscope to ovoid going in clipping, if you dont use bass boost for some head units and line out converters, you will never have effecient bass. Eg. I ended up pulling less power to make more bass by using bass boost. In otherwords, my headlights stoppped clipping

It works hand-in-hand. You spend your hard earned money on expensive equipment and take the risk by using the boost. Now common sense would tell you, if the gains are set properly, use a DD1 to detect distortion and none is found when using some boost you should be okay right? And it goes back to what he’s saying , use the boost and the risk of damaging equipment imminent 😅 ... if someone is having to use the boost with the gains up as well , does it mean their sub is underpowered ?

Know your head unit limits 1st , then tune your system to that maximum volume of your head unit. They don't call it the HEAD UNIT for nothing. 🤣 it's the leader of the pack. So when I put my amp in and set gain with bass boost knob remote all the way on and and also with EQ on power and bass boost in headunit on 4, and also boosted like 4 other ways in the headunit, when I was at 10 out of 62 volume I had almost max bass hahah, to make it all worse my phone also was on bass boost for the music app! How things can go terribly wrong. Now every thing is flat other than I put loudness on low because I don't listen to max volume.
