This was actually a really helpful ad as someone with major anxiety around making appointments, thanks!

Sitting here on a Sunday morning, watching videos about tracking goals rather than working on my goals. ☕

Thanks to your previous video about using progress bars vs. habit trackers, I set a goal to go to 50 classes at my gym and made a progress bar. I made something that should be a habit into a project! I'm already halfway there, so it's working. I'll reevaluate when I'm done, but likely I'll make a new progress bar to get to 100 - and at 100, they put our names on the wall so that's a tangible incentive.

I'm the same way with habit trackers. Even a little one-week daily tracker will ramp up my anxiety and depression. If there are more blank boxes or X's than there are check marks, my brain instantly interprets it as failure. Unfortunately, trying to track my writing progress can have the same effect, even if I treat it like a project rather than a habit. I've been struggling to get back to the fun and joy of writing. I think it's because for the longest time, I wanted to publish my work, but I put so much pressure on myself to "produce" a book that it killed my love of the creative process. Even trying to take the pressure off myself by saying I only write for fun now hasn't really helped. I really should get away from KZbin more often and spend time refilling my creative well, but we all know how addictive KZbin can be! Especially when you have ADHD. Instead of using trackers, my method of recording progress is simply journaling in my planner. I keep it flexible. If I don't feel like journaling in-depth, I will bullet journal or micro-journal in my weekly planner. I use stickers and washi and deliberately make it messy to combat perfectionism. When I journal, I include little snippets like "Did my dishes" or "washed a load of laundry" to remind myself that I did do something that day. And when I do manage to write, I make a big deal out of it--big, pretty stickers, writing in bright colors, anything to celebrate that win! I've found that noting every win individually day by day is much more motivating than trying to keep up with any tracker, even a progress tracker. But that's just my brain.

Genuinely this is true! I sometimes still use a checklist but thats for groceries and other tasks, but writing down what you have done immediately after doing them is a massive dopamine boost, not to mention keeps up the momentum of "doing things"

I was inspired a few years ago by Erin Floto's cleaning tracker to get more on top of my chores, and it really boils down to your idea of conceptualizing habits as a progress bar. I have a typical vertical monthly tracker, but instead of having a box per day to check off, I divide the 30ish days into 1, 2, or 4 segments based on how frequently I want to do that chore. If I do that chore within that chunk of time, that whole chunk gets colored in (like your movement goal). It's amazing how motivating it is just coloring in part of a bar, and while I've never hit 100% across the board for a month, I am doing my chores much more frequently/consistently than I did before starting the tracker.

This is so helpful! Habit trackers are too easy to forget about and feels empty, thinking about progress towards a goal sticks with you. Turning my habits into a progress goal can give me a reason to push myself to make a real achievement out of it... such as habit of "walk so many minutes a day" becomes goal of "be able to run 10 minutes". However, I'm not sure how to turn the habit of "clean the cat box every day" into a progress goal lol 😆it's something that resets daily like watering the plants I like how you simplified the book tracker in a fun way! I'm studying a language and have a long list of media I want to use for study (certain books, shows, magazines, etc) so I'm wondering about doing something similar for that.

Progress vs habit tracking really resonated. Thank you!

My motivation is similar to this. I like having trackers and logs, but dailies and especially **streaks** tend to make me feel like crap when I miss one. I think it's why I like 30-day challenges (or similar) because there's a clear end in sight. I only have to commit for a certain amount of time, and then if I want to keep doing it, I can; but if it doesn't vibe with me, I don't have a trail of failed habit tracking loomig over me. If you do read Mistborn, I would recommend a chapter tracker for them because they are soooo long. Amazing books, but they took me months even with the audiobook percentage (and library loan deadline) keeping me motivated.

May I ask: Where did you get that cover for the manager's notebook? I have the same notebook and tbh it looks quite rugged after just 1 month (I have it in a lighter color so it's really visible)

Hope it works for you "tricking" your brain. And if it does, maybe you could apply it to your "email/internal messages" 0 goal. Maybe as a "being a better manager" or "improving managing skills" projects? I'm looking forward to see how it works for you. One of the first things I learned the hard way was to acknowledge what really worked for me, despite all those new shinny trackers and things I was toying with. At the end of the day, what matters is what you've managed to do, not wished for 😅.

I love that you have so many videos of different ways you track layout and work with time and progress in different videos. Every one I believe for the way you present but I also find it hard to believe progress and have to keep changing or tricking myself in different ways to see and make progress as I keep not believing
