When you install the timing advance cam, the part you are using to set the gap, back into the flywheel is there a right way and a wrong way? Could this be installed 180 degrees wrong? If so how do you know what way to install?

A one cylinder 180 off will be top dead center if you turn crank once the cam moves half speed so timing it 180 off on a one cylinder only is ok ! Not a two cylinder!

Some kind soul please help! Owner of a 1978 xr75 sheared the woodruff key somehow. Upon replacing it the sheared it again first kick. They brought it to me and i successfully installed a new woodruff key, verified cam/crank timing and valve clearance is spot on but it won't run. I discovered the points break open 180° EARLY resulting in a no start and nothing more than unburnt charge being puffed out of the intake tract. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? flywheel advance cam installed wrong? Is it because the crankshaft was turned by hand with the flywheel off and then the flywheel was put back on? When turning the flywheel CCW, the F mark is at a 7 o'clock position relative to the crank when the points break open instead of about the 2 o'clock position which would align the F with the < shaped index pointer. So the points are actually already opened and closed by the time the flywheel F reaches the index mark. When the F is aligned with the index mark the piston is at tdc, cam sprocket O is at 12 oclock and cam lobes are pointing correctly. I dont understand why the points break open at the wrong time 180° too soon apparently. The breaker adjustment slot is set so the mount screw is exactly in the middle of the adjustment slot. The gap is actually correct too when they're fully open. They just open at the wrong time. If you know why this could be please share with me how i can correct it for the owner.

You bike hits Tdc n sparks on power stroke and exhaust all 4 strokes do it as the crank spins twice to the valves going through one cycle basically crank is moving twice as fast ! This is why 2 strokes rule the hit every tdc with compression! If that makes sense you can adjust points to open sooner or later with the adjustment screw on plates

I could rev high at all and it would backfire . I went through the carb like 3 times cleaned the grounds and it still ran like shit then I sanded the points and adjusted them and the bike can go past 1/2 throttle now . I swore it was a carbs issue because it felt like it was throttle dependent

Timing chain can be somewhat tightened/loosened externally. Stay gold.

But how did you remove the tool thing that sets the gap my puller tools won't remove it, fire, wd 40, nothing removes it.

Are you talking about the points with philips head ? The tool thing ? Impact screwdriver or u may have to drill the head off n put new set screw in , if this helps ?

@@WaldensWorld i tried to remove the tool thing for days. Finally I used a ball joint puller with a slide hammer attached to it. Needed the bare came shaft exposed since I'm switching it to electronic pointless ignition.

Hey I was wondering if u still have that second stator cam still I bought an xr80r and it didnt have spark and I took off my flywheel and it wasnt there

Wander if I have that same bike it’s missing the copper looking points cam bell that he used to set the points, parts breakdown doesn’t show one tho.

You don’t have to have the puller you can screw the bolt on the crank a little bit and give it a couple wacks

coryncheryl1 I was diagnosing problems on the same model, 1990 Honda Xr80r. If need be, I was going to follow this video as a directional guide. I was unaware that "point's are point's", I'm a beginner in the mechanical field. Thanks, take care!

No but there cool ! Points are not as dependable as solid electronics ! No moving parts or anything to get dirty or wear out !

@@WaldensWorld cdi is only reliable point system performance is better in terms of gasoline and speed and also 2stocrk there is no risk of getting stuck.

Just to be correct he has a .15mm feeler which is .0059. Not .625 of an inch!!
