Solving a no-spark issue on the CT70 engine

It took me hours to run down a problem that was preventing me from getting spark on my 1971 CT70 project. Turns out it was simple, but thought I'd make a quick video highlighting some common problems.

I believe you helped me out with this video. Ignition problems will drive a sane man crazy! I would like to add that even if they are not touching but close on the secondary, a spark can jump and reduce the output so the spark voltage is lower, but not enough to jump across.

I had something very similar happen, my wire between the points and condenser was touching the case of the condenser. I now use heat shrink on any wire that can come close to grounding out. Awesome video

The lead that comes off the points and goes to the ignition coil, is how I always set my point gap as a kid, I connected an ohm meter, or test light with a battery in circuit from the ground of the motor to that lead and turned the flywheel slowly till the timing marks lined up. The meter showed a reading of continuity to ground or the light would stay on until the moment the points were opened, I would set the points so they opened right when the timing marks lined up. The proper tools and troubleshooting skills with electrical circuits makes these kind of problems very easy to diagnose.

Thanks for that Video. Any idea what the ac voltage output should be on a 1986 xr100. ??? I am reading with a test light and get a nice bright flicker. When I test the ac voltage from the charging coil it is reading between 5.5vac and 7.3vac with a drill turning the engine. Thanks

How did you keep the flywheel nut from coming off when you spun it with the drill ? Lefty loosie ?

u should pull the wires up some at the wiring harness so they dont rub on the flywheel
