Setting up a multi-screen display in Windows 10

Here’s a simple productivity hack for yourself and your staff: Have multiple monitors.
Most newer computers will support multiple monitors without any difficulty; and Windows 10 makes the set up super easy.

I know everyone is saying it’s unhelpful, however this video is talking about screen resolution and monitor positioning so your mouse can move seamlessly from monitor to monitor. I think he assumes everything else is setup already. There’s probably another video with instructions on set up. Anyway, this was the first helpful video I found regarding screen position and use of mouse between screens. Thanks!

Worked it out myself. To set up two screens you need a monitor(s) and the laptop. Plug the HDMI into the laptop and monitor as if you were just projecting the image. Press the start button and p and select extend. Should make another empty screen with your same background where you can drag tabs across to.

Hi Damien, Thank for then nice video. I have connected a LG smart TV with builtin speakers as a 2nd screen after following your instructions. Prior to connecting the 2nd screen (HDMI), the volume was coming through my Laptop speakers. Now volume is coming through the 2nd screen. I want the volume to be controlled via the laptop controls. Just need the 2nd Screen as a display only. Can you help please?

Rajiv Jadhav well, most commonly the monitor is plugged in to the graphics card directly, or if you dont have one, in the same place as the USBs. The kind of port you need and how many of them you need depends completely on your monitor.

I figured it out boys! While in the DISPLAY settings for your control panel, scroll down to MULTIPLE DISPLAYS. There's a drop down underneath there, change it to EXTEND THESE DISPLAYS. Your screens will flicker and update, test it out after the update. It may have the extension backwards ie) moving your mouse to the left to move into your monitor doesnn't work and you have to move it to the right (backwards), simply go to the top and drag the [2] monitor to the other side of [1] and hit apply.

You can connect using HDMI cable or as old as vga. If your computer doesn't automatically detect it go to settings->devices to do some analyzation of your second monitor. (doesn't recognize it, doesn't appear, doesn't connect, etc.) Another option is settings->system->display->identify or detect A third option is In that same setting, "display" find "multiple displays" select "extend these displays" and it should duplicate on your second screen. Now for duplicate screens for separate tasks. Such as youtube in one and facebook on the other, "multitasking". On your primary screen find whatever you wish to show on your second screen. Click on it, hold it and drag it to your second screen. Now you can officially work on that second screen. In order to show and work on whatever you want on your second screen, you must drag it from your first screen. If you want it back on your first screen, you must drag it back from your second screen. Walaa! you have two separate windows to multitask. Good luck.

Very helpful...especially the part about dragging the monitor numbers around to get the configuration desired. I wanted to make my "right" screen the main and extend my desktop to the "left" screen but the default settings had me dragging items to the right of the right screen to wrap them around to the left screen. Very annoying. Anyway, thanks again for a great video!

Hello, when I get to the Screen resolution screen,I do not have the option for "customize your display" The screen you show with the different screens with number in them isn't there for me!I am trying to set up my two screen as independent monitors so that I can have the internet open on one page and word on the other, for example, and be able to work in both, not a continuous screen or mirrored screen as it is stuck on right now. This helped. I have an NVIDIA card in my box. You have to right click in your desktop and select "NVIDIA Control Panel" then go to "Setup Multiple Displays" You then get the same interface.

My one monitor is connected via dvi port, and the other one with HDMI. I can't get rid of the black edges, even if I use only the one monitor (with the HDMI). Only way is if i put it on 1680X1050 resolution. Note that the recommended is 1920X1080....Im using an Ati Radeon 4890..Any ideas?

If you 2nd monitore is not getting detected, then....In the device manager >Display adapters > Right click on your Adapter and click on Scan for hardware changes . It will get detected now. This worked for me !!

Someone please help me. I find that whenever I add an external monitor through the VGA port provided in my laptop (Dell win10), the system goes blank after some time. As the time progresses, the frequency of the blank outs increases, making it impossible for me to use the laptop. I need the dual display for the online trading.i tried to use usb to vga as well as HDMi to vga converters. But the system doesn't recognize the external monitor through the converters. Pl help.

Is it possible to split a monitor, so it shows one pc on one side and another PC on the other?. I have a HP 27es and one computer is connected via HDMI and the other by VGA. HP do include a simple switching program which is good, that switches between inputs with a simple mouse click, but it would be easier, if I could see both inputs at once, HP does have a partition feature, but I cannot figure out how it works as yet.

One thing I would like to add is if you don't have anywhere to plug the second monitor. I'm using the second serial port on the back of my computer for another device, therefore there wasn't anywhere for me to plug the second monitor in. So what I did is go online and find a special device that allows you to plug two monitors into one port/connector on the back of your computer.

Yeah you can use those. You can also get USB graphics cards which allow you to use a USB port to get another monitor plugged in.

I am trying to connect an external Dell monitor U2515H to my Dell Latitude E6410 laptop so that I can make the display very large since I am vision impaired.. When my laptop is open, the desktop and other displays from my small laptop screen are enlarged and fill the entire external monitor, and that's what I want. Everything is nice and big. But I don't have room to keep my laptop open. I want to close it and place it out of the way. But if I close my laptop, the desktop and other displays from my small laptop are placed on the external monitor screen without any enlargement. So my external monitor is wasted because the display is still laptop-sized. No matter what settings I pick from the Windows 7 screen resolution menu, the resolution on the external monitor is still small if the laptop is closed. Please help!

How to have multiple desktops and divide these onto two (or more screens). Now I switch from desktop using ctrl+win+ < (or >) Multiple desktops is what I like best on one screen. Having more screens without changing my desktop setup would be a nice feature.

I’ve been using the slideshow mode but on the weekend my daughter showed me what I was looking for, the presentation mode so only I can see the pending slides along the left.
