You can get your indies a little closer together if you start every other one at your normal level. Cover everything with three inches of soil and plant in between the first ones at the second level and cover those. Now, you have every other one growing in a split level, so they aren't competing as much for space. It's not much, but it helps.

Im in Colorado Zone 5b at 6000 feet. I have had good luck putting the potatoes at soil level and then covering up with at least a foot of wood chips and other garden debris like leaves, old vines, etc. Year 1 I planted with seed potatoes in the spring and it was pretty good. Year 2 I planted with potatoes from year 1, half in the fall and half the next spring, and I couldn’t tell the difference and the yield was a little better than year 1. I’m in year 3 and I planted all this fall, again at solid level covered up with at least a foot of what is now nice compost from the previous wood chips and another few inches of debris. As I harvest in the fall, I’m also planting, so it saves me from the spring rush. We will see how planting 100% in the fall works. But I think I have so much insulation that I will be fine even though we get down to sub zero temps

I have two questions How do you know which potatoes are indeterminate? I saw a video with someone growing sweet potatoes suspended by tooth picks to grow slips. Being a total rookie never planted potatoes I did this as a project with the children using red potatoes it looks like the, what I call eyes are growing roots. I was wondering if I just scratch the whole project with them or if I can plant anything? Sorry for the long question, they are so excited I hate for them to be disappointed but would rather not try to grow something for an entire season.

Coir comes on container ships burning diesel, so it really isn't all that sustainable. I live 300 miles from the source of my peat moss, so it's actually a much more sustainable choice for me. Homemade leaf mold would be best by that measure. Less than 1% of peat moss ever used has gone into gardens.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean and I agree you have to consider carbon footprint and green verses sustainable and ecology at times. I would love real packaging that provides info on that. Plus Canada mines peat differently than how much of Europe wrecked their bogs. I finally go to point where I can make massive amounts of compost. And our County specializes in leaf molds. But I also know everyone has access to different resources... so I present options. Stays safe. Please check out my seed and garden shop.
