Great Video! Seems that everyone's question is about using both GTM version as well as Shopify Integration. Obviously, if both used, you are getting double page view, double events, etc. So one or the other should be used. I also noticed that not ALL EVENTS show up when I follow your method to install GTM. For example - view_item_list|select_item|remove_from_cart|begin_checkout|add_payment_info|add_shipping_info| do not even trigger and it seems they do trigger with Shopify's integration. So the CONS and PROS for using one or the other - or would you help to know why some of the events don't trigger. And the last question would be all the companies that offer more and more custom data to be sent to GA4 by providing containers full of data and code - do you believe they are useful? Is initial set of data that is sent enough?

You could leave GTM implemented in the theme.liquid file, but you would need to adjust the GA4 configuration tag so that it doesn’t fire page views.

This method of tracking seems good if you want to get eCommerce data up and running quickly skipping the extra Google Tag Manager steps. There is another method on the Loves Data YT channel that goes into detail of how to do eCommerce tracking with Google Tag Manager that would be good to follow if you want to stick with Google Tag Manager.

Thanks @@leea4839! One thing to add, is that I’ve been told by Shopify support that the option to add additional scripts will be removed from the standard version of Shopify later in the year. So unless you’re using Shopify Plus, using a combination of the Google channel app and GTM will probably be the best bet when this happens.

Good questions! Tag Assistant will work with the G-tag also. You don't only see this with GTM.

If we've applied OneTrust cookie blocking triggers to our GA4 ecommerce event tags in GTM to comply with data privacy laws, if we switch to using the new Shopify GA4 integration to collect these ecommerce events in GA4, how do you recommend re-implementing those cookie blocking triggers based on a user's cookie consent (if it is possible)? So Monetization data hasn't been pushed to GA4. I contacted Shopify and they just pointed me to Google support. Hmmm, odd as I'm assuming that Shopify built the Google Channels App, not Google. Anyway, I'm planning to revert back to the method described in your video "How To Setup GA4 (Google Analytics 4) On Shopify". But I'm a bit worried that this method may become obsolete. Any advice?

A couple of updates you might find useful, especially as I've seen a few people who also have encountered Monetization Data problem. 1) - Monetization Data is now getting pushed to GA4. All I did was switched off the Google Analytics property within the Google Channels App.... then switched it back on again. Please note, before it WAS recording some data, but NOT Monetization Data 2) - Shopify Support told me (14th April '23) that the 'older' method Benjamin has taught us: adding Google Tag Manager to Shopify and then add GA4 to Google Tag Manager is perfectly valid and that they have no plans to block this in the foreseeable future... I hope this helps some of you out there!

@@urg454 We had a big problem with this app/removing GTM. It seemed to impact all of our campaigns since there were no Google Ads remarketing events being triggered. I have found a good way around this without implementing GTM again. Combine the tag connected to the app with your Google Ads tag/set it up as a new destination - this can be done via Analytics.

So I've been through the steps here, and the purchases are coming through into GA4 okay, but for some reason, most of them have the revenue amount set to £0 - so it's not pulling in the sale amount into GA4 for some reason? I'm still not completely sure how GTM aligns with this new approach. If I want to continue to use GTM - because I have bespoke GTM tags of my own - then I should keep the GTM config in my shopify theme, but remove all the conflicting tags? So you will need to adjust the GA4 configuration tag in Google Tag Manager so it doesn't fire page view events.

Comparing different analytics platforms will always result in differences as they use different methods to collect and process data. That being said, you should see similar numbers, if they’re dramatically different then you will need to check your implementation. You can continue to use GTM, but Shopify won't let you add it to the checkout steps (unless you're on Shopify Plus), as I've covered in my previous videos. However, I have been told by Shopify support that the 'Additional Scripts' option used to add code to the order status page will be removed later this year (again, unless you're using Shopify Plus). So that's another reason to consider switching to this method of using the Google channel app.

That verification tag is probably for Google Search Console. I’d leave it, otherwise you’ll have to verify your website again. And if you want to switch your implementation, then it’s generally best to remove any other code to prevent duplication.
