Hey Ryo. I think having a porous substrate as a base layer helps with root aeration, also with biological filtration since bacteria will colonize those tiny holes. You can also add some root tabs in it, so it acts as a fertile bottom layer.
@RyoWatanabee4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. Yes, I’ve always heard that it helps with root aeration but never really understood the concept of that. I guess the roots just need some space to breathe?

On small tanks set up width wise Matten Filters not only make sense but look good. Loose a bit of space but it ain’t s perfect world. Also, if you use egg crate at the bottom of the aquarium it helps to anchor and distribute all kinds of different layers better. It also levels the loads of heavy real stones

Thank you for continuing to update us on your rice fish and your uncle’s rice fish. My rice fish have developed patches of darkened scales so I have moved them from an outside tank to an inside tank for a general purpose medicine treatment. Other than the discoloration, they seem happy and healthy. I decided to wait to dump the outside tank, hoping there might be some viable eggs. The next day there seemed to be hundreds of very tiny fry! I guess I’ll wait to see if any become sick. Both the adults and fry seem to be healthy!
@RyoWatanabee4 жыл бұрын
That’s great news! I however prefer to keep my ricefish outdoor as they are an outdoor fish. For some reason, they do so much better when they are kept outside. Breeders here in Japan also breed ricefish outdoors. I understand for your instance too though. If I had a ricefish that was quite special and hard to come by, I’d probably keep it indoors in a tank
@chrisshelton35044 жыл бұрын
Ryo, I only brought the fish in for treatment. I’ll take them back out when they are better. I will need to bring them in for the winter because in our weather, the outside tank will freeze solid. Thank you for your reply!

Niceeeee.... I really like that simplicity in your videos and I've got a small suggestion for you about lighting and filtration... You could use a sponge filter for mostly biological filtration, Then grow some tall and fast growing plants in the backside so that you could prevent algae but also get free sunlight for plants. I just have done it and i could say that would be a better background comparatively

Pumice is going to give you a lot of nooks and crannies for friendly bacteria, albeit not as much as with activated carbon. I would use it in a filter in a bed 2-3 inches thick. I would not use it for substrate, because there won't be a current forcing oxygen through the layer. It'll just be laying there collecting dirt. I'd love to rig up a drip shower filter using pumice. And the cheap price overcomes a lot of problems.

Great relaxing informative video again, thanks mate. I’m still a bit of a novice with aquascaping etc but my job is horticulture based. I’m curious about the massive amount of natural sun/ light these tanks get. Is that documented as being helpful for tanks? I think it would be amazing for their growth but mixing it with “artificial” light may be confusing for the plants.. Nothing beats real sun but lights are pretty dang good. I will happily go and do some research right now but I’d love to hear first hand opinions from y’all. The fish won’t like a 24 hr light cycle but the plants would be very happy with 20 or so and a few hrs night time. Tropical plants, not so much others.
@glasscanvasart52734 жыл бұрын
Matty B different light spectrums won’t confuse plants. Lighting periods in aquariums tend to be 6 to 12 hours. People associate sunlight with algae, but some tanks with direct sunlight don’t suffer.

not sure if already answered, but first it works as space for bacteria, witch break down the Ammonia into Nitrate. Second it prevents the Soil to compact to heavy. you dont wont to compact the soil, because of anaerobic or rotten spots. Also it makes the rooting easier for the plants. Also since these Lavarock is of very low density, it should be able to store excess nutrients (not sure about that).
