I spent years working out what my photographic style was. Each week I'd buy pockets full of Kodak's cheapest B+W film (now sadly discontinued) then blow through it. At that stage the amount of photographs I considered to be worth keeping was incredibly low, but I didn't mind, because I was out in the countryside and enjoying myself. My camera was dirt cheap, a second hand Praktica. I *wanted* a Hasselblad 500CM, and there were several times during this period I could have bought one of those or at least a Nikon. However the one I had was working so I stuck with it, deciding I'd get a better one when I was older, which I subsequently did. After all this time I still use film, all B+W, but I've just added a 6x17 field camera to my portfolio. I'm still learning that and it's slow because you only get four images per roll of 120 film. I could use a digital camera, I own a pretty good DSLR, I just didn't buy it for taking photographs, and taking pictures quickly removes the majority of the pleasure I get out of the process now. This might change over time, but there's no chance I'll be getting rid of my film cameras.

Your passion for film photography is inspiring! Sticking with the Praktica helped you refine your style at your own pace, and exploring 6×17 sounds thrilling. Keep enjoying that slower process-it clearly fuels your creativity.

Talent, even great talent - without serious wealth, outstanding youthful beauty, or family / private school connections - is absolutely no criterion of art success.
