"Seventy-Six Trombones" for Theatre Organ

“Seventy-Six Trombones” is a rousing march composed by Meredith Willson for “The Music Man” in 1957. Willson was well-versed in the American march, having played in John Philip Sousa's band in the 1920’s. The number of 76 trombones is likely a reference to 1776, making this a perfect march for America’s Independence Day! Arranged for Theatre Organ by Harry Garland.

That’s the kinda music a little boy back in the early 50’s could get excited about, growing up we went to any circus that came to town or a day at the amusement park, I had all but forgot about those days and thanks sir to you , you brought it all back and the smiles thinking about those warm days long ago.

This takes me back to when Pizza and Pipes restaurants were around. A bunch of us from work would go to a local one after work on Friday, order several pizzas and pitchers of beer and listen to the mighty wurlizer organ that sat in front of a windowed room containing the large pipes and the moving louvers above where the sound came out! What a blast!

Good entertainment Harry! My late friend George Wright would be proud of you sharing your talent purely for people's enjoyment, as he often did on impromptu occasions. You may remember during the early days of Stanford's EE Department's summer session of 1975 when I gifted you with a vinyl double album of GW's organ tunes. Those were the days--for both of us!

Good to hear from you, Ed! I knew little about the Theatre Organ in those days, and learned a lot by talking with you and learning of your friendship with George Wright. Of course Jim Angell introduced me to Tom Hazelton's performances at Cap'ns Galley, and I still cherish those musical moments. I hope that all is well with you, and I hope that you are still enjoying the organ.

My late grandmother had an organ as well, though not as elaborate and as many pedals and such, but it was always neat to watch her play hyms and Christmas songs for us as kids. Too bad this is sort of a dying art these days.

For some reason the market for home organs came and went. It is a shame. There are signs of a resurgence of interest in the instrument, though, and I am hopeful that its popularity will grow once again!

@@hgarlandThe old home organs were quite limited compared to what is available today. They are now using digital samples from actual pipe organ installations and the electronics that reproduce the sounds are better. You can be in a large cathedral or a small theatre or almost whatever You want.

Yeah, I'm obsessed with bass pedals. My kit only has the smaller, "spinet" type, but at least it has 21 pedals. I used to have a Farfisa organ, triple keyboard (2 big, 1 tiny) with concert pedals. I miss that. Sadly, I don't have room for anything bigger than what I have. So when I see someone, like Larry, doing heel and toe, I just love it. But he did double (both feet) heel and toe! You really have to "know" the pedals to do that so perfectly. I can heel and toe, but for me, it's a bit more difficult because I have very wide feet. I have to play in my socks. I cannot wear organ shoes, but I wish I could because they have the slightly extended heel, which makes it easier. Oh well. LOL
