1:08:15 I once had a job that *literally* exploited my grief. My best friend in my twenties was a cartoonist and an animator. He died unexpectedly, and as a favor to his family, I reached out to some of his clients to let them know what happened (so they wouldn't have to have the same conversation over and over). One of my friend's clients offered a lot of condolences and then asked me if I was also an animator. I dabbled, so they offered to pay me to finish the animation projects my friend had been doing for them. I was pretty broke at the time, but more than that, it seemed wrong to let my friend's projects go unfinished. My friend's client leaned into that, too- like, "it just seems right to finish what he started, doesn't it," etc. They ended up stringing me along and dramatically underpaying me compared to what they promised, and I let it happen because I was grieving and wanted to complete my dead friend's unfinished projects. And the client knew I was grieving, and they used that to take advantage of me. I've had meaner, ruder, and flakier bosses, but that client might still be the worst human beings of the bunch.

We do not react to reality, but to the meaning we give it, which is why each person is affected differently. We are the sum of our memories and experiences. That makes us unique but also a bit isolated. This series is fascinating, I look forward to the second season.

Each person is an island. Existing in a universe of their own. Each of us project our own perceptual framework onto everything we experience, including all communication with other beings. There is nothing truly solid in reality, all form is a simulation of mind. 99.99% of everything is empty space, just fields of energy spinning and vibrating at different frequencies. Also, I really love the severance theme song. Revel in the absurdity of being!

In horrifying news, on the "if someone was an arsehole and you didn't have your memories would you still feel uncomfortable around them?" front, we know for a fact that the answer is yes because of epilepsy treatment. So, this is not very common now but, in the past, especially for extreme cases, they would remove parts of the brain that were regularly getting otherwise untreatable seizures. Before the case I'm about to describe there were people who had had one of the two hippocampuses in their brain removed with no ill effects, so everyone though to would be fine to remove both. However, when they did remove both from a patient for the first time, the patient in question never formed a new autobiographical memory (personal memory about their own life, like the ones removed in Severance) again. There was a particular doctor who thought it would be "fun" to prank the guy with one of those electric buzzers that hurt but don't cause permanent damage because the guy wouldn't remember. He didn't remember the incident, but from then on disliked and refused to trust that doctor ever again. I would assume these cases are googleable and I'd recommend looking them up. It's genuinely fascinating. The other one relevant to Severance is that you can cut the connections between the left and right sides of your brain, and one of the two halves controls speech, so you can ask it questions and get perfectly normal answers. However, as each side of the brain controls only one eye and one arm, you can also cover the eye connected to the side that can speak, show the non-speaking side of the brain something, ask the speaking side about it. They then won't know the answer because they didn't see it (as it wasn't shown to the eye connected to that side of the brain), BUT, the non-speaking side *can* point to the correct answer! So... that's terrifying. We also know from people who've had damage only on the speaking side of the brain that the non-speaking side can then learn to speak. So, hypothetically, you could do Severance? Maaaaayyyybbe? You could disconnect the two sides of the brain, and then sedating one side of the brain at a time, so that only one is active and in control at any one time. We know that that works because it's how dolphins sleep. They sleep on just one side of the brain at a time (so that they can stay active and swimming around while they sleep). Also, there's a woman who had literally one of the two halves (the normally speaking half in fact) removed as a child because of very severe epilepsy and she's honestly just completely normal. Indistinguishable from anyone else. Again, I know that sounds impossible, you obviously should not trust a random KZbin comment from me, definitely worth looking up yourself! All that said, 1. I'm clearly writing far too long a comment about a thing we can't functionally do in real life, even if *maaayyyybebeeee*, it's closer to possible than a lot of other things in science fiction. Also, 2. For the disconnected two halves of the brain people, their emotions definitely carry over to both sides of a severed brain. You can show a scary, depressing, horrifying, whatever, bit of film to the non-speaking half and then the speaking half will become upset and uncomfortable and not know why. Which, again, absolutely horrifying. Which is unfortunate because that's not a TV show, that's reak life. Really managed to be cheerful here.... erm... hope anyone reading this is having a lovely day? ...Sorry? 😛 I promise the reason I know this is not that I'm an evil Lumin scientist! I had something affecting my brain a while ago and that was scary and how I chose to cope, wisely or not, was to learn everything I could about brains. False sense of control I suppose? It helped me though. Not as much as the fact I can take 1 pill a day and it almost entirely fixes the issue and I get my brain back, which is also very cool, but it did help me to learn about this stuff. Finally it's come in useful? Ish? I just know that your mileage may vary, but my brain happens to be very important to me! Seriously though: brains, absolutely fascinating. Personally I think we should all have one!

I don't think it's about the job. It's all about the Severance procedure. They're actually test subjects involved in a long-term trial of the Severance procedure. The Severance procedure if/when perfected will rake in billions of dollars in profits. Think of the applications: You can work in the government intelligence field like the CIA, seeing highly classified intel without risk of you ever divulging such information when you leave the job. The procedure also provides a legal loophole to practice what amounts to slavery. Employees can be abused, overworked, etc and they would have no recollection of it offsite, so there is no way to whistle blow; plus the employees are technically going to work of their own free will every day in spite of whatever unremembered abuses they suffer on the job. It makes for an insidious form of slavery where the employee himself becomes unwittingly complicit as a slave master in his own enslavement.

I actually really enjoyed S3 a lot even though it's no longer in the park, I found that the philosophical questions were elevated in that season and I really grew to care about some of the characters more than the earlier seasons. S4 I think suffers from there not being a S5, as it was originally intended to be a 5 season story. I definitely didn't enjoy that one as much, it felt like it was setting up for the conclusion of the entire story arc but then we never got it.

A bit of advice: Maybe try to avoid talking too much during the episode. Of course it's a reaction so I get that you have to comment, but don't go overboard - especially in talking about stuff that is not directly related to the current scene playing out. As much as possible, limit comments to what's happening in the moment. At the end of the episode, you can then review and comment about your thoughts on the show itself and the storyline and your theories about the characters, etc. The reason it's not a good idea to talk too much during the show is that what can sometimes happen is that you might talk over some very important dialog and miss something interesting that would make for a good reaction. This can be frustrating for a viewer expecting to see your reaction to something they know is coming only to realize that you've completely missed it because you were distracted by what you were saying.
