Two things I picked up rewatching this through these reactions: 1. Helly and Helena both underestimated each other's rebelliousness, which is ironic since they should know their own refusal to back down. 2. All of the more extreme, ridiculous elements of life inside the severed floor, such as the rumors of inter-departmental wars and larval pouches and Eagen divinity and so on makes more sense when you consider the innies have no real world exposure. It's like Lumon is trading on human superstition and the innies' isolation to instill this heightened, mythic world view that helps keep the workers in line. It's actually terrifyingly clever.

This! Both ahellys are stubborn enough that I highly doubt either of them will be giving up easily, especially when they’re more likely fueling each other’s fire than anything else Helly R.’s stubborn rebelliousness, and Helena’s stubborn adherence to the rules, one loyal to her company, and one loyal to herself

Helly reciting the break room monologue in the mirror, and believing it for the first time under this context, is one of the most hauntingly and beautifully ironic callbacks I've seen in a show. I'm kind of late to the party, but I'm fully convinced that outie Irving is intentionally trying to break down the barriers. He spends his nights painting the same image over and over, listens to the same song, drinks coffee and deprives himself of sleep. I think he is trying to cause his innie to fall asleep and dream of the painting, because he knows that dreams can bleed info between personalities, and the paint dreams seem to confirm this to some degree. He (for some reason) has all this information and the piece of info he really wants his innie to know is the relevance of the testing floor, but also he is fully prepared for being taken over by his innie, key in pocket, all info well prepared and even maps ready to go. Outie Irving is absolutely trying to infiltrate the Severance program. This might also be why the outie learnt all those facts about the Kier cult, turning his innie into a true believer. We know that knowledge is kept intact, like the US states ("Delaware"), so why not also Kier lore.

As soon as he learns he has kids, that character 180 is amazingly well-acted.

I think this was one of the best finales I've ever watched. So tense. This episode honestly made me waaaay more intrigued into o-Irv more than any other outtie, the running theory I've seen in the community is that Irving used to have Milchiks job which would explain why he's seen the testing elevator and has a list of servered employees, I don't remember which episode it was mentioned but its stated that Irving has worked for Lumon way longer than he's been severed. If you're interested there's a supplementary book called the Lexington Files (it's like a 30 min read) about a previous MDR employee who managed to communicate with her innie. TL:dr She's convinced that Lumon uses their department for corporate espionage against competitors (even though I got the impression she drew the conclusion through a coincidence). TL:dr 2 The biggest takeaway of the book however is that Lumon purposefully causes accidents (lady in the book was also in a car crash like a certain wellness councillor) that would result in victims signing up for Severance as either a way to get an easy pay check or to process trauma.
@BunnLilah Жыл бұрын
Loved your reactions! I read one theory about Irving that with the loud music, coffee, and repetitive painting, he's intentionally trying to get his innie to doze off or sleep and retain those images in his mind. I'm not sure exactly what purpose that would have but maybe the subconscious is able to transfer memories between the innie and outie somehow? We already saw it happening when Mark made the tree out of clay in a previous episode without knowing what happened on the outside. Maybe Irving is using sleeping/dreaming as a way to smuggle info in and out but with his mind only? Especially with all the sleep/dream imagery that has been shown. Who knows, but I can't wait for the next season!!

Arcane is the only one I might say is on the same level personally. It's done a little differently, but both shows are 9 episodes of master storytelling and tension split across two very different worlds as they start to collide, and both of them end with cliffhangers that have the potential to either force those worlds farther apart or crash them together.
@georgekleinfelter7041 Жыл бұрын
One by one, you've pointed out that all of the people surrounding Devon, including Ricken, are odd. They didn't understand why it wasn't called World War I before World War II had even occurred (Episode 1). They shout things like, "I found your baby! I'm the one who found her!" (Episode 9). They spend an inordinate amount of time making sure that the book they leave on Mark's porch is placed just so (Episode 5) or they make reference to a "hamburger waiter" (Episode 9). They say things like, "I had a bird who pecked the back of my head" and are concerned that Mark may see the hole that remains in their head as a result. Their childlike nature and unfamiliarity with the actual world indicates, I believe, that they aren't just odd -- they're innies.

The whole severance device adds so many questions. Like obviously its not ethical to create essentially a whole new person who is literally just doing slave labor as they dont get to benefit from the money being made from the job. Their life is literally just work. But what happens if you sever someone in a coma? Would the innie self be able to actually be awake and use the body? In the case do you just leave them an innie all the time? Or do they take cases like where Marks wife was in a car accident and she should have or could have died so they see it as an opportunity to make a full time slave by leaving her as an innie the whole time? Or was her outtie self brain damaged so only the innie is still alive? Which is kinda similar to the coma thing. Then theres the whole pregnancy thing. Like oh you want to have kids but not deal with the pregnancy and birthing bits? Oh just get severed... Then what about people with addictions? Just server them so the innie would be the one suffering through the withdrawls and consequences. Also what about prisoners? We have so many people serving life sentences just using up tax payers dollars for essential free food and a roof over their head. Not an ideal living situation obviously but still they are not an active and productive member of society any more but they are now actually more of a burden on society... So sever them and now their criminal self just stays locked away while their innie go go be an active member of society again?

It's been a year, so not sure if you're still checking the comments here. But when I originally watched this series, I spent weeks scouring KZbin for Easter eggs and theories. Two of the most seemingly inconsequential were, what state is PE, and "I'm the one that found the baby!". The comments and behaviors of most of the people at the book reading are not normal! I don't think it's strange writing, I think it's people that don't know how to act in the real world. And the state PE, when they've mentioned Delaware and Montana seems like something to be explored. One other theory was that Cobel was trying to destroy the company from inside, so being fired suddenly derailed her plans.

Thinking about Helly's reaction to the gala party and her tearful apology in front of the mirror... think a little about how she feels. She was already angry at her outie (she called her "that bitch" and was hoping to kill herself in a way that would traumatize her), but she wasn't ready for how important Helena was: the poster girl for getting severance implants on everybody?... Damn, it's like finding out you're your own worst enemy, like the hero finding how he is also the demon lord. There were a few cases of that in literature already, but not very many.

@@Ysckemia Saw him on stage not long after _Return of the King_ came out in a one-man show based on "the Scottish play" where he basically just did "the highlights". Remains one of my favourite things I've ever seen on a stage. (Doesn't knock off Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones in _Driving Miss Daisy_, but close). The only other thing you need to know about John Noble is, he's played Unicron. Probably the best since Orson Wellles.

Episode 7 where they reveal mark’s wife at the end was pretty epic. That’s where shit hit the fan.

Don't worry, they are filming right now, or have already finished. So hopefully sometime near the end of the year or next year? This is one of the best TV season finales ever, the whole season builds up amazingly to this episode and its so tense as a result. I just hope they can keep it as good, its hard to beat the mysteries, buildup and concept of this first season. But thankfully the main writer has the whole plot already outlined for the series so there should be solid ground. What I love about this show is its so ripe for cool scenarios. You can follow the outies as well, you could have someone like Mark getting reintegrated and 'spying' inside Lumen, and then there's all these new avenues to follow like people who are severed out in the real world, like the woman who gets severed just for her pregnancies.

Xander shared a Reddit theory that Rebek is actually a goat… and I’m not even saying that’s crazy. Everything is on the table. I can’t wait for next season! The sooner I can come out the better.

@@funnylilgalreacts Oh my god, what a theory! Hahaaa. The crazy thing is in that world it could actually work, I'm guessing they read into the bird pecking her on the neck thing. I hadn't even considered that animals could be involved, but then we'd be looking at full-on consciousness transferal, whereas the show currently just has a person's brain 'split'. I'm here for it though if they go down that route. I also read a similar theory where the 'revolving' that Helly's dad mentions in the bathroom could be that he will transfer his consciousness to a new body. That would fit with why he looks so awful.. and I guess could even mean that he is actually Keir or at least from earlier in time when the tech was first made. So many possibilities!

Good ga-reif, this episode should have a stress warning. About Irving, it makes sense to me he’d go to Burt’s house. As his innie self, Burt would be a familiar name to him. Irving lives alone and is under time pressure to find someone trustworthy fast. (Though who’s trustworthy in this town is up for debate). Also, there is a possibility that Irv and Burt may know each other on the outside as they are both artists, though innie Irv couldn’t know this. And, they’ve made it clear that they can and will go into the houses of the employees so leaving a note to oneself where your outie can easily find it is not a good idea. If you hide a note, who knows when it’d be found. Irving’s hidden Lumon info is essentially the note he’s left for himself. I just put my mind in a pretzel twist.

i want to see an innie who's terrified to get in the elevator to leave because if their outie decides not to come back, it means they're dead.

I think that is why they do that repetition thing with the staircase and door as shown with Helly R. in the first episode; for the innies their perception starts and ends with the "gateway" to the priso... I mean office.
