I had the absolute privilege to meet Pawel on our dirt strip on Hvar, Croatia last summer. His videos are fascinating, inspirational and capture the true spirit of aviation. These guys assessed the risk and clearly has a Plan Two to return if they couldn’t deal with the icing. It takes a special pilot with a special set of skills to undertake work like this. Easy for the armchair critics or Captains up at 40,000ft sipping their coffee to condemn these guys. This is an amazing video, I was on the edge of my seat throughout! Would I do it? Not a chance! COULD I do it? No. Best wishes to you both from England, looking forward to meeting you again Pawel, we have some unfinished beer business! Peter H

You make a very good point. Just because I wouldn't take a risk like this, that doesn't entitle me to condemn those who took it. We all have different levels of risk mitigation capabilities, different risk acceptance levels. We are lucky that the early aviators didn't have social media, otherwise humanity would be still stuck on the ground, because "it's too dangerous to fly, let's not risk anything".
@rnzoli

@@banjo2019 it's no problem to speak up, just remember that if you are an extremely careful and cautious persons, any risk taking abouve your own acceptance level will look horrendously bad decision-making to you and everyeone similar to you. For this reason, VFR pilots often criticise decisions taken by instrument-rated pilots, commercial pilots often criticise decisions taken by military pilots and so on, because they take comparatively more risks. But that's not the correct way to evaluate risk-taking. The correct way is to compare the risks taken against their mitigation capabilties. And in that regard, when the climbout from icing did not work out, descending to 700 feet solved the problem. If icing was a calculated risk, and descending was their Plan B, then the risk-taking wasn't horrendous. It's definitely beyond the level I would have personally taken, but somehow don't feel compelled to force my risk-taking preferences on anyone else.

@@banjo2019 every "I fly this and that" , and "I have x hours" statement is an attempt by people establishing themselves as authorities on a certain topic, where they often lack important information regarding the actual risk management that took place in reality. You were not there, and the METAR only gives you information that it was ABOVE freezing level near the surface, which was their eventual escape route. I wasn't there either, but I have no problem to imagine that with the worsening weather coming in from behind, and less accurate weather information in those areas, the pilot-in-command took a calculated risk in trying to race the 182 to the top of the cloud layer, while constantly monitoring the situation and descending back to melting temperatures as Plan B. Given the fact that they were flying a single engine aircraft over vast empty spaces of unfriendly ocean, which is a huge risk on its own. the additional risk taken by the pilot is moderate, when you look at the overall risk of them mission as a whole. For people like you, I wholeheartedly recommend reading Charles Lindbergh's book, "The Spirit of St. Lous". He was constantly criticized by his competitiors in the New York-Paris race, because he went against the "common sense" at the time: flew single pilot (more tiring, but much easier to take decisions fast), flew single engine (a much higher risk addition over land, but negligeable when in the middle of the North Atlantic due to insufficient engine-inoperative performance of the contemporary aircraft), and to top it all, he did not take a lifeboat (again a big outcry from folks with lots of experience, but he though extra fuel is more important than a few extra days to live in the middle of nowhere). So decisions that make no sense to us can actually make sense, if we know the details. Another related topic is that risk aversion is a risk of its own. Flying in always perfectly controlled conditions can lead to complacency and we know of situations where aircraft entered very severe icing unexpectedly. Please be aware that the ice on the aircraft doesn't care, if it was "known" or "unknown" - it's just ice, the physics are the same. So pilots, who don't take any risks at any time are actually far more vulnerable to be caught out by something unexpected, than those, who carefully take mitigated risks. The important thing is not to avoid the risk, but to keep the risk and their mitigation in good balance.

All pilots have their minimuns. If you don't exceed them and you don't compromise them then you are always going to make the right call. A planes minimuns are fixed, an airlines minimuns are fixed, your chance to make an informed decision relies on you never busting your own personal minimuns.

I agree. What i wanted to show the public is roughness of ferry flights. That was to show how hard is that part of aviation, and how dangerous can be. While other parts of the aviation is mostly civilized, this part of aviation due to geographical path, land shape close to those remote airfield locations, lack of weather information - again due to fact that areas these ferry flights take place are simply unpopulated - so there is no reports, because no people there - is rough. Speaking of Kulusuk. One side 13000ft Icecap, other side the Ocean. Winds there. Of course there will be a lot going on. You may hold in hand there on the ground most recent weather maps… and while in the air, you experience something close to maps, but with addition of Gods will (and you name it). The fly conditions there are what they are. As a weekend pleasure flying Pilot, I don’t bother to drive to the airport if there is no sun outside. Just common sense. Here… imagine planing for such ferry flight. You sit in States, in a big city, and you have on table all data. Airfields are not going to move. There are limited options how the route can be planned. Most time there is no ALT airfield on the flight plan. (First non comfort aspect). Then you look the weather for next week or so. As you are an Aviator, you know that the weather predictions are good for next day, but just for day after tomorrow predictions are let say “so so”. And of course, you are not being an ignorant with it. You plan. And you plan the route and timing best way due to your knowledge and experience. And then you fly. And you readjust. You are getting to more and more remote locations, with more and more limited options. In that journey, Dominik sat for there days in Goose Bay, due to not good weather. And then you go Greenland.. you are getting weather things on the way, that were not predicted in forecast. The area you fly above are so big and so unpopulated that things form there in “it’s manner”. You try to avoid them, if possible by flying around them, if you have such option. And what you really do then? With no transponder “printing” your current location anymore due to radar coverage, with no radio transmission you are flying away from your planned path… so if something happens, possibility that any rescue will find you are lower and lower each mile you getting off your planned route. Icing can be deadly. There. Or on the stairs to your house. Flying there is simply “expect unexpected”. Pilot there must have process data and monitor all options, and divert if necessary. Yet those Pilots there do fly, and to their jobs. Some of them get missing - Either while flying or later on, in bars, pubs getting drunk or alcoholic due to accumulation of stress, and human limitations. That is a rough life there. I wanted to show a part of it. There are reels on instagram, and a voice there say “this is a true beauty of aviation”. How would you call this? For me, hats off. Experience and knowledge are essential there. That is why i posted Dominiks bio. Would i fly there solo myself? In dreams why not? In reality, have no capacity for it, so “no thanks”

I'm relieved to see you've landed safely and intact. As a flight instructor, it's imperative to address the circumstances of this flight. Departing from Kulusuk in adverse weather conditions with strong winds and known icing, particularly in a Cessna 182 not certified for such conditions, was highly risky. Remember, it's always better to exercise caution and patience when faced with unfavorable weather. This incident underscores the importance of sound aeronautical decision-making. Engaging in such flights is akin to a suicide mission and should not be promoted merely for the sake of garnering attention or revenue. We must prioritize safety above all else, as indulging in such actions could mislead aspiring student pilots into believing such risky behavior is acceptable.

Read Dominik’s bio at: instagram.com/dominik_punda Then judge by your experience once again. Read Metar for Kulusuk that day. Please. We were on the ground for about an hour or so. Anyway, communication of weather conditions is in the movie. We cut the icing on the way, same way somewhere in the path leg before. As said, there is no precise weather data available while flying Atlantic, as transponder is out, and radio can be out - of reach zone. And Yes, i only hold a PPL license, but i am smart and well just passed that 14k questions of EASA ATPL… working in a different field successfully for over a decade. Your assumption that i didn’t know what is going on is wrong. All Avaliable data was presented to me, each leg, before departure. That was my third Atlantic flying SE with Dominik. Every time i learn something new. If you read METAR, the wind is 10 degrees off the runway heading. Wind volume, also on VIDEO (departure section). And if I understand right, there is gust on runway just different volume of wind speed. The gust was observed in the plane, while it was parked by the building, which building causes so much tension in wind flying around. Matar at departure is: METAR BGKK 311550Z 07027G41KT 5000 -RA BKN016 04/01 Q1007 That is Marginal VFR… with a wind close to the rwy heading - that does not even bother a tecnam sira for departure too much (true VFR plane) So… for my obvious mistake, and of course as a video producer and editor - my proficiency in it, you assume that icing took place just in departure, as well as you think in arrival (which is not, happened on the way, in clouds that were nowhere on the meteorological maps.) So.. no… but please - understand - we are packing here 2 hours of life into 15 min YT movie. And for that, i understand, and I am sorry for, some things shall be written on stickers on the movie more. Ie… iceing on camera lens is truly high speed up caption (nobody will bother to wait on effect watching real time it happens on YT) My comment to that topic? An Instructor who says that Cessna 182 is not certified for lest say IFR flight (in marginal VFR by metar conditions) and gravel runway wet conditions departure is not really an flight instructor i would love to learn from. I reather learn from Dominiks and his outstanding experience and knowledge. Please accept that i bring to you guys an outstanding Pilot from whom you may learn from… (and sorry for my choices of music which, some viewers admire - I added to the video clip but dramatization actually worked well based on music, as in all video production is)

H was referring to the fact that C182 is not certified for flying into known icing (FIKI). If chopping of huge blocks of rime ice from the leading edge as part of preflight is not flying into known icing then I don't know what is. I mean, what did you guys expect? That you will take off and there won't be any icing in the air? And saying that the quoted METAR is not bothering for a Tecnam Sira is just crazy. It's a gust factor of 14 knots and marginal VFR!! Not mentioning that with 4C on the ground and such a small dew point spread and rain you will be in the icing level as low as at 2000 ft. I got my PPL in one of those and there is no argument in the world that would convince me to take off in those conditions in this airplane. I understand that the PIC experience is extensive and he's a top notch pilot but I think that the ego took over here. I'm glad you guys made it out.

I flew that route in a Cessna 185 in 2019. You are lucky to be alive. The smart money would have had you stepping out of that aircraft in Kulusuk, tying it down properly and checking into the very nice hotel. And if your pilot didn't want to do that, the smart thing would have been to leave him to his fate and get on the Air Greenland Dash 8 the next day. In fact, the very smartest money would have had you not flying into Kulusuq that day across the icecap in icing condtions with its surface level of - checks notes - 9,000 feet. For sure He is not crazy. That for once. He is far more experienced in his field Sir. For second, you were there once. I am not a ferry Pilot, but I was twice what you have been there. This hotel you talk about can be closed for any public due to extremely wealthy crowd that can be there. Hotel can be 2/3 empty but they will not check in any strangers- even if that are Pilots or Aircraft’s owners. I had slept there in one of those mid 50s last century barracks, back then, and i don’t complain, but that was not an option that time. Your notes are your notes, 9,000ft? i don’t understand you, maybe due to fact that English is my second language. Minimal lever over icecap that day was FL140. Also, I understand that you flown a dash 8 in or out of there, but that is your story, however politely I am “careful whose advice I buy but i am patient with those who supply it”. And believe me, as i may look, luck 🍀 was last thing that flight was relying on. Or maybe for the fact that engine will not quit, but every Pilot hopes for it, once airborne. And please do not tell me what would be “smart. “ Your smartness is yours, my is mine. Let people live their lives through. I don’t tell anyone where is “smart money” or “smart thing”, it is somehow offensive to do it to 45 years old man, i hope you take it soft. Thank you for your opinion. Thanks for sharing. This was avoidable risk-taking, in my opinion. A good example of how NOT to operate an aircraft without anti-icing. However experienced the PIC may be, this was unnecessary risky in a single engine piston driven airplane. If it would have failed, and you would have ended up in the ice cold water after less that two minutes while flying so low, there would not have been much time for survival, even with the drysuits. A few hours maybe, if you'd survive the impact and manage to get out of the plane in time. Interesting was also the concerned voice tone of the ATC controller from Kulusuk, that requested "keep me updated". ATC is not in a position to not allow you to fly with such waether, but he surely sounded concerned, to say the least. But hey, it is your life, so you can decide to do ith it whatever you wish, right?

You even show that you had to “deice” the plane manually on ground before departure. I read some comments from you now but I do not agree, I would have told the pilot “I am not going in this weather” and then to say that you show this that people see how tough ferry pilots are, sorry but this is no argument. I value it as all human shall be heard equally and respected] I value the time you spent to write your opinion. 🙏 You would delete the video? Why? It is already been there. That would be incoherency your side, if i shall be asked to judge of such maneuver. Replying to you. Why this movie is here in KZbin? So.. This man, the PIC Pilot is my friend, He is very experienced in Aviation, he is 20K H PIC, finally he is a Test and Safety Pilot, that by trade, goes into aircraft and he is required to put and aircraft in question into configuration that is crazy (life/death) to recover - and that is just to gather data of what it is to improve the plane in safety. Possibly his flags are already set differently from yours or mine - and that is for his job requirements. Possibly he was in Icing conditions before. Possibly he experienced Ice somewhere that it shall not be by human expectation called meteo prognosis. Possibly he did not experience icing where it shall be by science called physics. Possibly he “knows” the weather there, or actually its uncertainty. We all rely on physics, these days, and not only there. If you are able to capture this psychological aspect of the world, you think twice before you call ie. “A money” some pixels compositions on your led screen on your phone Mike. The “money” known for centuries, you have last seen before the Covid in 2019. Someone turns off the “power” and that is it for your money, your pocket, your security these days. Physics, icing, how do you rate this PIC ADM then? Someone commented “ADM of that PIC is spot on”. Having said in your consideration, would you disagree? Dominik is executing his options, and there is no doubt about it. He is good in it. I have seen your Instagram, your posts, and relations from your journeys, you show captures taken happy in Far North Aviation , but also you show bad beautiful weather and not so beautiful weather you flown through. Again, somehow tempting for you is flying those Atlantics, isn’t it? I think we all push ourselves to the limits, everywhere. Each of us has different knowledge, training, experience and understanding of his/her borders. So …Maybe this movie is to cause a discussion? Dominik had used his experience, knowledge, and education. He went by his physics, and it is hard to disagree that he did win, while doing so. Dominik has demonstrated that he was able to deliver it, as he would demonstrate crosswind component to a plane that he does evaluate. Did he had to? That is a different question. He wasn’t there for pleasure, but to do his job. Thank you! 🙏 BTW: editorial (transfers of DA62 is not a C182)

I did this flight about 6 years ago and my approach was to push through the good weather while waiting out any bad weather. My only other suggestion would be to keep your survival suit fully zipped up - it's possible but time consuming to put it on in flight but better not to have think about it if dealing with an emergency - especially from 700 feet above the ocean! Those Pilots there are skilled, and operate in such conditions making bold choices. Suits Information copied. :) Urban story, but In Goose i met a guy whos brother in law ditch the plane in the ocean, and ditching did not went very well, successful, because of high wing and fixed gear, and hight of wave. Since that he is not wearing suit at all. I was not convinced for such choice at all. I'm sure I have nothing close to the experience of the ferry pilot, but I've flown that route and found the freezing level much lower than forecast and the weather significantly worse. You'd just picked up a load of ice coming into Kulusuk, so climbing in IMC to FL120 was never going to be ice free. I'm glad you made it safely into warmer air with enough performance to level off and melt the ice. Others haven't been so fortunate.

I appreciate that this is 15 mins out of a couple of hours, and that I don't have the data that you had available. I have a couple of questions asked in the spirit of understanding - 1. What was the enroute forecast? With the ground temps it looked like ice was a strong possibility. 2. Why not fully wear the survival suits? Glad you made it.

Severe case of get-home-itis. I would have told Pavel he was on his own and gone back to the hotel, at the very least the survival suit should have been fully deployed. Even at altitude, dealing with an emergency in a confined space makes putting on the suit nigh on impossible. This video gives me nightmares.

Watching the video, it looks like the pilot aimed to climb over clouds to avoid icing, but they encountered it during the climb, prompting a descent below the clouds. Without detailed weather charts from back then, it's tricky to judge the decision-making. If icing had been forecasted in the SIGWX, they should've stayed put. Additionally, some ice remaining on the plane on the ground when the temperature outside is 4 degrees Celsius doesn't necessarily mean there were icing conditions.

Fair play for posting this as there are a ton of safety lessons to be learnt. The planes not fiki so should have been no where near imc below freezing. It was the right call to descent but pretty pointless sat in a half done up immersion suit at 700’! You need at least 10k of glide time to put them on. Well done for making it and thanks for sharing

Just casting the light… a technical question: have you worn immersion suit such as one you get in Goose Bay FULLY up and have you tried to operate the plane, not detailing for (bitching about) operating ie radio? Some things are limited there. Ferry Pilots i met on there, mostly fly such way, it is also reflected on other movies/series on YT such Fun For Louis World Flight. Btw… i love that one, if you haven’t seen it, you for sure should check it out! Best regards

Dear Pawel, departing in that weather was obviously not the right thing to do....even less so considering the airplane you were flying....and the fact that your route took you over the ocean. Watching the scenes as you entered IMC gave me goose bumps and the seriousness of your situation could be felt in the video. However, you stayed calm and collected and professional, which was equally amazing....I was glad to see you arriving and beginning your final with two whites and two reds on the VASI....Beautiful and a relief. Good Luck and stay safe!

So, you are Candian CPL, what you do? Where you at? This channel is for people. At beginning of it, it was called „wniebowzieci” which in Polish means taken to heaven, but also amazed by experience. First 30-40 vids were about my people whom took flying GA for their first time, and my role was to take capture of their emotions there! Since I switched for English as a language of channel, I dropped that name, and stayed by what is my first and last name. So… if you would like to have a contact with me, come over to IG… Canada is not far by International flights, within last 2y got extremely expensive by food cost and hotels. First full ferry with Dominik i have done at winter/spring of 2021 and hotel in Toronto airport did cost 120 CAD, last year same hotel same room 457 CAD, so i have chosen bed and no-breakfast basement room of some Pakistanis “developer” of booking dot com, survived that, no problem, for 88 CAD ;) But, for me, having a pleasure to meet a Canadian aviator, making a documentary on that, especially if we could gone flying some interesting birds, would be fun. It is what it is. Most Pilots there flying does not bother with wearing the suits. As we seen on Fun For Louis - world flight - from 6 y ago… pretty much everyone does not fully wear it. Nor for raft. Of course m, raft is in board, but once get a bit wet, it deploys open, usually still inside the plane. I had luck, flying and experiencing it with a Pilot that has over 20 k PIC already and he is experienced in ferrying, as well being a Test Pilot and Cpt in some major Airliner in Europe. Not going to judge the flight or the preflight examination/decision(s) (I wouldn't do it). But one thing that struck me was that you didn't have your suites on. You had them on up to your waist. (they can be quite tricky to put on even standig up with lots of room) I think you could do with an exercise in an emergency at low altitude (700' !) where you have to quickly assess the situation, find out what's wrong/happening, try and fix it to not have to crash in the middle of nowhere in icy waters where rescue is hours away. Along with someone (dont know if you guys planned this ahead?) activating the ELT that was hanging in the window. Then you crash (remember to unhatch the doors before impact) in the water with all the caos that creates and now you two need to put on your suites in that cramed space - maybe upside down. How you recon you would survive that? Glad you got to Reykjavik...

Yes, I agree. Thank you for your comment. Engine quit is a life/death situation. Hitting water at Best Glide Speed is still 120km/h. Hitting the 3 meter wave fixed gear high wing l, it is a sure complex turnover. For comparison bottle of water at speed of 90km/h weights 202kg. All of those AOPA trainings and similar are about getting out successfull diching. No one is harmed, the doors are not jammed etc, and the water does not go in. Raft is self deploying while submerged in water. With that being said it may deploy while still inside the plane. I don’t know if i am going to fly Atlantic again, but those survivor suits most Ferry Pilots rent in Goose Bay are made in such way that are impossible to ie. operate radio etc. and still those Pilot who do that amazing and difficult job of flying SE low alt over the large amout of water, they go that way. Half worn up. There is a series of a name Fun for Louis: The world flight. A big successful series of 2 guys flying the world in Cessna 210. I watched all 70 episodes in 4 days, and that inspired me to become a Pilot… so I did. They also are flying in such copromised suit way. You are completely right. This is dangerous, as every other aspect of General Aviation there, and so as a Friend to my Friend Dominik, i think is a time for me to invest into my Friendship with him, and make him a gift of survival suit with detachable gloves and hood. And you made me go that way. Thank you.

Przy czym nie ma w tym rutyny. I jak nam, naszej narodowosci, latwo idzie budowac pomniki po odejsciu kogos, tak trudno przyznac ze jest ktps wybitny pomiedzy Nami. Rok temu, rowniez ktos wybitny i Polski zrobil cos wyjatkowego. Wynikalo to znow, z wiedzy i pracy u doswiadczenia. Kazda z tych osobowości jest wybitna. Lmao, this is insane. When we did a crossing in a turbo pressurized Baron, our rule was daytime in clear weather only. Flew to Greenland at 25k, which was minimum for that route (& the service ceiling of the plane. Which was stupid, luckily the thing could make max diff, not to mention the -40° OAT) As we approached Narsarsuaq the AWOS reported heavy snow out of nowhere. Descended into the fjords and made it down. Then some delays departing to Reykjavík led to nightfall over the Atlantic, dodging some layers with icing. Our engine monitor TIT sensor went haywire and spiked off the charts. Quite unsettling when you're 200nm from shore. And there was something like a 100 knot crosswind aloft. Be extremely cautious when dealing with the North Atlantic.....

My question is: i am wondering about “decision making”. When you were in Kulusuk airport, with 40kt gust, really really bad weather, what information you had, or conditions you had, that make you take the decision of “go ahead and take off”. Hello there! Nice to have you on board. Thank you for your comment. 👍🏻 FIKI pistons are only certified for 17nm cruise in light rime ice (ref: see CS23 or FAR23) so it is not much distance covered as per 600 nm legs to be flown. 😅 twin is a twin, but for sure you can relate to what is really going on there, so thank you for being on board. Once again thank you for posting your comment, as a Pilot who had seen environment out there. Best regards.

👀 Awesome video! It perfectly demonstrates the importance of understanding weather phenomena, especially in such challenging atmospheric conditions. The focus and concentration of Dominik, such an experienced pilot, is a testament to the difficulty of the conditions you were operating in. I have to say, your video has motivated me even more to study meteorology as part of my PPL course and to delve deeper into the subject.🌨️❄️ Keep up the great work!

Debrief consideration: at near 700 AGL was it smart to not have your survival suits dawned fully as you don't have the time to get fully kitted up before splashdown at your altitude? Maybe in your future pilot briefings incorporate a set altitude or phase of flight where they must be on fully?

Thank you for your opinion, and for the time spent asking it. I value that. Your questions have been answered few times already in past 400 comments there, if you would read what the section, before you ask. I say: answered few times, so you are not only one who is writing, not necessarily reading Sir. As i value your time for commenting the movie, i also value my time in reply. I see no sense to answer to you, again, because you don’t read the first place, so I don’t think you do it anyway. It is nothing personal, just people here - who comment does not read themselves each other, but claim to be detailed and knowledgeable Pilots.

Recklessness and bravery in the same flight. Every year, unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer such pilots. Your family and friends are waiting for you at home. Remember that, if you don't value your life yourself. If there is an opportunity not to take risks, then don't take risks. This is the Atlantic, not a casino.

Hello there. Thank you for your opinion. I understand that this is your evaluation based on your experience, and thank you for sharing. However, please don’t be judgmental especially if it comes to what I (or we) value in life. Nobody likes does kind of bravery in pigeonholing of people. Mind that. This is the life, not a playground for your words for scrabble.

Wow this should be taught in ground school of what bad decision making is. Visible moisture with close to freezing temps with close temp dew point spread, obviously lowish ceilings very strong winds and do an Atlantic crossing in the winter on a single engine 182 with no FIKI?! Yes that is stacking the odds against you too much. Glad you made it alive and learned from it. There’s a reason no one does these types of crossings in this type of aircrafts the winter!

@danroll81

@@pawelkozak_com visible moisture regardless of visibility. Clearly it was raining and the temp spread close and below 10C. Yes you flew into known icing in the middle of the ocean on a single engine plane that prohibits flights into known icing. Insurance would never pay if you happen to crash.
