Thank you for sharing, I’m fascinated by thunderstorms and like watching radar of developing storm cells. Sadly we don’t get good thunderstorms where I am in scotland so it’s great when you tubers like yourself share videos of your storms. Thanks again 👍🌩⛈

You're very, very welcome! Indeed, thunderstorms are just so fascinating to watch, both on radar and in person! The anticipation on thunderstorm development days in simply indescribable, so I do now feel sad that we are exiting the thunderstorm period! It was a pretty nice year (2019) up to this point, though! Thank you for your viewing!

Yes, it was quite something how conditions changed to quickly - it was mostly because of the strong upper-level winds and overall deep shearing field. This caused the thunderstorm cluster (bowing segment) to eject quickly through the area and, hence, a quick transition to various conditions! Thank you for your comment!

Wow! That bow looked intense on radar! The same parent synoptic system caused a lot of straight-line wind damage and even a few tornadoes just north of me in Lower Michigan. I got a ton of really intense CG activity in the high instability air Tuesday evening. Was spared from the severe wind and tornadoes only due to the fact that storms developed early while the stronger shear was still to the north and west, closer to the cold front. By the time the strong dynamics arrived it was late and there wasn’t much instability left.

So good to hear, Marshall...check out my comment on this amazing video that you introduced me to.... And TYSVVVM for viewing some more of my earlier-2018-season videos...and commenting..Yikes...9 straight hours of thunder? That's a lot....for one single setting...as for me..I had 10 hours of thunder way back on 6/26/88, and the same on 7/10/88...all loud Tstorms are on audiotape.... Same thing on 10/15/89...and more recently, 7/27/08 ... 7/1/09((videos are on this channel))... and most recently, 7/27/15..I got one nice loud clap on video and uploaded.... Anyways..I also enjoyed your own uploads, Marshall..and TYSVM for the introducing me to this awesomed video...as well as your own ''Email replies'' ...... Fondly...James

Hi Marshalllbs, Yes, indeed! That was a very intense bow signature on radar as it advanced towards my region, indicating very strong Westerlies aloft! And yes, I do recall the impact this area of low pressure had in Southern Michigan before it ejected farther NE. In our case, the strongest shear coincided with the high instability, and given the mid-afternoon timing of the front, it was suitable for an enhanced locally damaging wind risk and briefly rotating updrafts, both of which occurred. Thank you so much for your viewing and commentaries! ~Trav.~
@marshallbs6 жыл бұрын
Yea. The severe weather mostly affected Wisconsin and Central/Northern Lower Michigan. By the time the stronger shear got into the southern half of Lower Michigan there had already been several rounds of heavy rainfall and it was also near midnight. Early evening SBCAPE was close to 4000 J/kg, so there was some wet microburst type wind bursts up to around 60 mph... even with the marginal shear. The density of lightning strikes was unusually high as well.
@Rain12906 жыл бұрын
I remember the August 6th, 2018 severe thunderstorm here, there was an unusually high number of cloud-to-ground strikes. SBCAPE/MUCAPE reached 3500 J/kg (the highest that I have seen this year), but with only marginally significant shear. Still, thunderstorm development was robust, and we received very strong downbursts of wind with that one, too, especially West of where I live.

It would be fantastic to have some additional occurrences before the miserable cold returns! Perhaps on October 3rd. ~Trav.~

What distinguishes a severe thunderstorm from a thunderstorm? Is it solely wind speed, or other factors as well? And is the determining factor(s) the same in Canada as the United States (minus the fact that one uses the metric system & the other doesn’t)?
@Rain12906 жыл бұрын
Hi B3burner, A severe thunderstorm is a thunderstorm that is capable of producing maximum wind gusts of at least 90 km/h, medium- to large-sized hail, flash-flooding/excessive water accumulation over a small period of time, or rotation that may lead to a tornado. It could be all of these factors occurring together, as well. As long as one or more of those criteria are fulfilled, a thunderstorm may be identified as severe. The United States has a similar system when classifying thunderstorms, although the actual thresholds may vary slightly. I know that the hail needs to be at least 3/4 inches in diameter in order to consider a thunderstorm as severe (in the case of hail anyway) in the United States. The wind threshold is identical, and I would imagine the same for tornadoes and flash-flooding. ~Trav.~

You got a really mean looking green sky with the shelf. I love it when the sky gets like that. Unfortunately the camera never does justice to how dark the clouds actually are. If the sky looks that dark on camera, it was probably apocalyptic looking in person.
@Rain12906 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was very ominous as it advanced quickly towards my area, and the shelf itself began to undergo some curvature. And yes, I agree that cameras cannot do these cloud colorings justice, as compared to how they are realistically seen with our own eyes, but yes, it looked slightly darker than what is shown here. :) Thanks again, for your viewing! ~Trav.~

It’s weird how a clear sky can get swiped off of stage in a matter of 13 minutes and 23 seconds. Especially how if it was in the afternoon and aftermath it looks like a calm cloudy day. 15:05 looks like Satan is creating the thunderstorm holy shit.

Wow I actually had no idea a storm hit us (I was in a basement of a building the whole day) and I came out and see branches scattered. Looks like we almost had a tornado! I assume where the clouds hang down at 15:00 mark is where the tornado would have appeared? Thank for the footage. Hopefully a couple of more storms for the season eh?
@Rain12906 жыл бұрын
Hi Sky Of The Universe, No problem for the footage! This one was quite intense with the rain and wind and was reminiscent of the August 22nd, 2017 microburst. This might have qualified as a microburst, as well, given its localized nature and the bowing signature shown on radar. Yes, there was some "lowering" as the line of thunderstorms became close. There was also some mild rotation, which was manifested as a protrusion/bulging of cloud between 11:52 to 14:00 in the video (to the far right). The feature was persistent, but the "lowering", as it is known, did not progress closer to the surface. If it did, then the chance for a tornado touchdown would increase. Tornadoes that form with these thunderstorm modes are usually weak because the family of thunderstorms partitions the energy, so less focused energy per thunderstorm and, thus, less of a focused updraft for the tornadic circulation. Stronger tornadoes are, therefore, more prevalent with discrete cells, and so that is why the tornado risk is greatest before cells merge into a squall line or small segments. Once mergers occur, the hazard transitions to damaging straight-line winds, especially in portions of the line that bend forward like a bow (as shown in the radar imagery). And, yes, there continues to exist at least a few more thunderstorm opportunities over the course of the first half of September. Thank you, as always, for your viewing! ~Trav.~

at 15:09, was the thunder embedded in the cloud or was it caused by a cg bolt
@Rain12906 жыл бұрын
Hi Windows 7, I am not completely sure - it might have been attributed to a lightning discharge that occurred outside of the camera's range at the time, or, as you suggested above, it might have been due to an undiscernible discharge inside the cloud directly. That said, there was a somewhat distant lightning occurrence at the end of 14:59 into the video, but the thunder response seemed too soon for it to be associated with it 10 seconds later (unless the discharge was closer than it appeared to be, in which case, then the thunder at 15:09 would correspond to 14:59). ~Trav.~

That's awesome! I love how higher lightning frequency appears on lightning detection! Often times, when lightning frequency is high to very high in a thunderstorm, CAPE is large.
