Aside from providing good sport, ratting like this is also a very environmentally sound practice, where I live folks reach for the poison when they get some rats and the poisoned rats are then eaten by owls, hawks and other predators. This has devastated stocks of many small predators. Also it benefits not only the farmers but also the distillers as i drink a good bit of bourbon watching this stuff.

Great video, as always, so thanks. Not surprised that rats live under hay bales. However, again I'm forced to wonder if anyone in the Severn Valley realizes that making your home or farm part trash heap is also very conducive to uninvited guests. If you watch a few of these videos, there is ALWAYS a trash pile that needs to be dug out. It's like everyone has a 10,000 square foot Petri dish in their homes, and then they have to call in the bacteria and mold police to sort things out.
@ClearPests8 жыл бұрын
Brian Salk that is the reality of farming... These farms, having visited them are very good, there are a lot worse out there. It's the feed that brings the rats in more than the mess tbh...
@Antipodean338 жыл бұрын
Farms are a full time job, you just don't get the time to do everything, especially around certain times of the year when you are collecting grain or it's lambing season etc. Things get put off to after the crop or whatever it is you are farming is all finished with, then, as here, you have a big clean up
@mattcullen61098 жыл бұрын
Antipodean33 thank God. someone with a common sense comment. my grandparents were dairy farmers and barely had time to scratch themselves. easy to criticize if you are not in that position
@Antipodean338 жыл бұрын
matt Cullen, unfortunately people who are clueless about farm life and work seem to think it's a 40 hour a week job and on the weekends you can mow your lawns, clean the gutters and put the bins out. And as you would know, dairy farmers work the hardest, early morning starts 7 days a week. I'm a bricklayer by trade but worked on a grain farm for a year and I've never known work so hard, there is always something to be done, it's relentless work and many more hours a week than the typical 40
@mattcullen61098 жыл бұрын
Antipodean33 exactly mate,,im a chippy (carpenter) I do about 45 a week. I'd hate to be a farmer. my grandparents used to get up around 4.30 am and finish around 9.30 pm 7 days a week with very little time to rest during the day. its hard thankless work with little reward and we as consumers still whinge about the price of milk. the supermarket screws our farmers constantly

You won't ever run out of rats to kill. I heard someone say "killing vermin & this includes foxes as well. Is like removing buckets of water from a stream. As soon as you remove those then others from outlying areas quickly move in to fill the void. Nature abhors a vacuum. She fills empty space quickly, silently & seamlessly."Those Plummers are Craken good hunters. If they're not faster & quicker than the Jack Russells & Paterdales! They're neck & neck with them! Based on just what I've seen from video footage though, they appear more aware, quicker & faster? None the less great hunting dogs!

You should really try a Shiba Inu. You'll find them to be WAY better hunters then terriers. Both my neighbors have terriers AND a rodent issue. The one of the left actually has TWO dogs. However ALL the rodents go out of their way to NOT go into my backyard even while their nests are in the backyard of my neighbor to the left and the food is in my backyard of my neighbor to the right! She's really good a waiting until she KNOWS she can catch her prey which means she'll remain totally focused AND still until the creature is far enough into the yard and she knows to wait different times for different prey! Even as a pup she killed EVERYTHING she could possibly get! I live in town and so far in 18 months she's killed 7 Rabbits, 5 squirrels, 5 rats, 3 birds and 2 mice!!! The rabbits and squirrels have gotten smart enough not to go into my backyard EVER even though they choose to go into my neighbor behind me backyard which has 3 large dogs! But apparently my 16lbs Shiba inu which stands only a foot at her shoulders is a bigger threat! , is REALLY good a killing with one bite bc she has MASSIVE teeth (more like a German Shepard then a small dog) she also rather chase something then just focus on the one she caught which is why she's caught multiple rabbits within a second of each other! She's SO fast, agile,and smart that she can kill with one bite and her prey never even has a chance to make a sound since she crushed their windpipes. She's NOT afraid of timid about the kill in ANY way yet she doesn't hold onto her prey and shake it. She just kills it and goes for the next thing that is moving! Her predatory drive is miles ahead of all the dogs I've ever been around and it's been A LOT considering I worked for a vet AND lived in the country. This is all bc she is more like a wild dog then a domestic one and is one of oldest ancient dog breeds. Since she's from Japan which is the oldest country AND they didn't keep dogs for pets they ATE them! It only takes a Shiba a couple days in the wild to go totally feral and they are literally uncatchable AND they have NO problem surviving since they are careful what they eat (no rats or mice) and are super hunters. They actually used to be used to hunt bears though of course in a pack. Another great benefit is that you NEVER have to potty train them since in the wild dogs don't defecate near their den otherwise others will know where they are located. As a 7 week old pup she could go 12 hours without a potty break and the ONLY time she didn't make it was bc it took me TOO long to get the door open and her outside! She also tracks EVERYTHING that moves including PLANES and birds!
