Severus Snape was one of my favorite characters from the beginning of the series. I never believed he was truly a bad guy. Snape is one of the bravest people in all if literature in my opinion. And I also adored Alan Rickman. He was one of my favorite actors, and he brought Snape to life perfectly.

Snape would never have been sorted into Gryffindor. Slytherin was his maternal family's house. His mother was a Slytherin; therefore he probably grew up listening to stories of it's past glories.

Dumbledore was not afraid of a slow painful death. that was NOT one of the reason he asked Snape to kill him. he knew draco would take a while to try and kill him. and he ended up taking the whole bloody year! and dumbledore only had a year left! so this was definitely not one of his reasons at all. he was going to use his death to get ahead in the fight against voldemort by getting Snape to kill him to further cement Voldemort's trust in him. it was a brilliant plan. but no way did it involve dumbledore wanting to avoid pain. Dumbledore would not have been so selfish as to think about that.

Nadia Gk yeah both boys matched the prophecy perfectly - it was voldemort who weighed up which family had produced the most powerful son so he could figure out which would be a bigger threat and therefore likely to be the one the prophecy foretells to take him down. voldemort frequently overestimated his own power and wouldn't have believed anyone could defeat him if he hadn't heard that prophecy. but after he came to terms with the fact that someone was going to defeat him in the future, he still only believed it would be a very powerful wizard possible of doing so which is why he chose the son of the more powerful parents. lily and James potter must have been more powerful than frank and Alice Longbottom - or at least voldemort believed they were more powerful.

Cherisse Fernandes Nadia Gk it was never said that he chose harry because he was a half-blood actually. Dumbledore simply mentioned that it was curious that he chose the half-blood because according to Voldemort's beliefs, pure-bloods are better in every conveivable way - that includes magical power, but once we learn about Voldemort's past it becomes clearer to the reader that voldemort doesn't actually probably believe this and that the reason for his hatred of muggles and muggle borns is because of his hatred of his father and dishonorable path his mother chose by choosing a muggle husband over a wizard. Voldemort's belief in the superiority of his magical ability over everyone else directly contradicts the belief he spouts that muggle blood taints wizard blood and that a muggle born or half blood cannot possibly be as good of a witch or wizard as a pure-blood. so those two facts - the fact that he decided harry was the bigger threat, and the fact that he believes himself to be the most powerful wizard of all time, contradict his supposed beliefs in pure-blood supremacy. this is why Dumbledore mentions it as curious. and Dumbledore never says so but what I said earlier about my belief that voldemort subconsciously doesn't really believe his own rhetoric and that it is only a disguise for his deep-rooted hatred of his father for abandoning him and his mother, is what I believe Dumbledore came to the conclusion of eventually after discovering more about Voldemort's past. and I think he was trying to show harry that as well by saying that. but he never said that was the REASON he chose harry. he definitely said that the reason voldemort chose harry was because he perceived him to be a bigger threat than neville which means he believed harry to be more powerful.

also the reason Dumbledore never gave Snape the DADA job was NOT because of the curse - it was because though he trusted Snape, he knew that Snape had previously been pulled in by the dark arts and he felt that the position of DADA teacher would offer too much of a daily temptation for Snape.

Snape’s storyline reminds me of The Hound in Game of Thrones. Both were screwed up by life, seem to be villains yet later turn out to play for the team good. And besides turning out good, they were too broken of people to possibly give them a happy ending so they both met their faith by the end.

and no one could ever believe Snape was truly a gryffindor even after he changed sides - he was still a nasty person despite his bravery and selflessness. he was very cunning, ambitious, power-hungry, sly - all the things a Slytherin is. and yes he did change and lose his lust for power after lily died but he still has very slytherin traits. slytherins aren't all bad people. their lust for power, ambitiousness, cunning and selfishness makes them far more susceptible to become evil because a love of power and a darwinian 'only the fittest deserve to survive' mindset prevents them from caring about anyone else in their quest for success and that can lead to doing bad even evil things to achieve power if they decided that line was worth crossing for power. but not all slytherins decide it's worth crossing. they may walk over others to get power but I don't think all of them cross that line from selfish over to evil. and though Snape was selfless in many ways (all of which stemmed from his love for lily) he was also very selfish at the same time. I know that seems impossible but it's not. his treatment of harry is evident of his selfishness because he was taking out his hatred of james potter and his resentment over lily's death out on harry who was blameless and that is a very selfish thing to do. he also unfairly favoured students from his own house over others which is very selfish. so there's no way he is a gryffindor at heart because gryffindors are not known to be selfish. I didn't say they are not capable of being bullies but James didn't bully Snape to raise himself up which would have been very selfish. he truly disliked Snape. and though that doesn't excuse his behaviour - its not selfish. and besides teenagers are known to go through a selfish and mean phase but they grow out of it. to truly determine someone's character you have to judge them as adults because when you're young you are still figuring things out and are not really aware of the consequences of your actions or behaviour or are you able to put yourself in others shoes yet easily. you go through many different changes in behaviour while trying to find out who you really are and what's actually important to you. and though bullying leaves very deep scars and should never be underestimated or overlooked, the rest of Snape and James's teenage behaviour should be overlooked because it's not a very fair time to judge someone. but despite all of Snape's changes after lily died he still remains a Slytherin and that's NOT a bad thing. and by saying he's really a gryffindor that is exactly what you're saying - you're saying you can't do good things and still be a Slytherin.

How on earth can anyone call Snape selfish? He literally sacrificed /everything/, including his own life, for one person. Lily. Always... Yes, Snape was cunning. Probably the most cunning figure in all of Harry Potter, besides maybe Dumbledore himself (and yes, Dumbledore /was/ cunning. And no, that's not a bad thing - but it is true.) Perhaps he was ambitious. But really, that took a back seat when it clashed with his love. In the end, Severus Snape was more of a Gryffindor than a Slytherin in my eyes. I wonder how he'd have turned out had he been sorted into Gryffindor tho - perhaps he'd have ended up far more Slytherin-ish, due to him never losing Lily to James? It's an interesting subject.

severe strict teaching like that of Snape's is actually proven to be an ineffective form of teaching. kids do not learn well in a pressured and fraught environment and ESPECIALLY not when being picked on and put down by their teacher - that actually has the WORSE effect on kids out of every other method because self-belief plays a HUGE part in academic success and success later in life. the power of the mind is far more than people realize and it is consistently shown that in the old method of teaching where the kids who weren't keeping up were simply left behind, created so many adults with unfulfilled potential. once they realized that everyone learns differently and also that a learning disability doesn't mean that you can never achieve success in life, they started actually helping the kids who weren't keeping up or who had learning difficulties instead of just telling them they would amount to nothing so not to bother trying. it's still a struggle nowadays to get teachers to treat every kid as though they have potential because most teachers still don't understand that self-belief is the most essential tool in creating success, but some teachers are becoming more aware and also generally teachers don't leave the 'stupid' kids behind anymore - they help them. so to say that Snape's teaching methods were effective is total bullshit. look at the affect it had on neville who was an especially anxious person with very little self-confidence. potions was his worst class because Snape constantly told him that he wasn't good enough and that he would never amount to anything and so neville believed this and therefore his potions work was dismal. you saw that in other classes his self-belief and anxiety also hindered him but he worked much better because the teachers in the other classes treated all the kids fairly. I think Madame Sprout was probably the best teacher to Neville because she encouraged his passion for herbology instead of demeaning him like Snape and therefore he had a lot of success in herbology. also it is not true that the other teachers respected Snape at all. they all were aware of how unfair he was towards the students he disliked and how mean and short-tempered he was. they probably respected his knowledge and skill at potions but that's it. it was quite obvious in the books that the other teachers had a rather cool relationship with him.

Severus Snape, was a jerk but I found in the books that while being a jerk to Harry Potter he was also a very caring man. One example that spoke volumes to me was when during the Prisoner of Askerban *SP* (I am writing this before going to sleep so I do apologize if I misspell the name of the prison.) Snape protected Harry and his friends from Lupin when he changed into a werewolf. He also in the movies seemed to be at the forefront when the other instructors rushed in to protect Harry.
