Wow, Seville looks stunning. I also noticed upon glancing at the map that towards the coast there is a zone described by Google as a "vast nature reserve & wetland ecosystem with lynx plus nesting & breeding sites for migratory birds." I must book a trip to Seville for at least four days.

What is encompassed by Al Andalus?

So in the 8th century the Islamic Conquest quite rapidly controlled the entire Iberian peninsula ...with the minor exception of a narrow strip of mountainous land on the northern coast in Asturias that maintained de-facto independence. And this small hold-out did sort of become the thin end of the wedge that allowed kingdoms in the North to gradually expand, Then - as mentioned Al Andalus fractured in the 11th century and the board flipped where by soon the Christian kingdoms controlled the upper half of Iberia & pushed south in a few bursts of conquest - so that by the 15th century, Islamic control was limited to just the Emirate of Granada in the south

@@nomblings yes! in one of those pivotal historical years - in 1492 the Emirate finally fell, Muhammad XII surrendering to Ferdinand & Isabella, then a few months later Columbus had an audience with them in the Alhambra where he was granted permission for what would become his voyage to the Americas

Still prefer all those English cathedrals :-) Seville Cathedral is nothing to scoff at, though. This Islamic heritage is really beautiful. I guess just visiting the cathedral and Alcazar as we did was a mistake...

I mean i def have a habbit of going to cities like 'right, where the ancient stuff at' but Seville as a vibe is very infectious - its the sort of place you can just wander and soak it in without a particular end point in mind 😊
