Mom taught me to sew, starting with embroidery, tea towels. I was hooked. Something for my "Hope Chest". (Anyone remember those?) Gradually moved up to sewing machine and making clothing. I've made all of my own clothing ever since. My first sewing mahine was $15 from the GoodWill. I bought it just a few days before I got married in December 1975. That mahine was a "Dressmaker" brand. It went through making 5 kids clothes, and making all of my nursing uniforms for 30 years. I finally gifted it to my eldest daughter in 2015 and bought myself a brand new Brother. Lo e it!

You inspired me to get out my old sewing machine and give it a go. It took me about 3 hours to clean it, remove the rust, get past the error messages ( my son and I searched the internet and could not find a manual) and remember how to use it. I am so wrapped. I will never go back to no sew. I am astounded how great it looks. Thank you so much for your inspiration! Now that's said, I need to get back to my sewing machine LOL

"You're an adult - or you're not" - hahaha! Definitely NOT an adult. I'm just a goofy kid stuck in this broken old body. I asked my Grammy once when you stop feeling like a silly kid on the inside, and she said she'd let me know. Well, she passed at 97 and it hadn't happened yet - in fact she was beginning to relive her childhood. So, I'm not holding out much hope for me getting the hang of this whole adulting thing. I think it's overrated. Probably one of the reasons I enjoy your videos so much, complete with puppy voices and everything - something I've always done with my critters. I feel like you're a kindred spirit. ♥♥

Your sewing class experience sounds very much like my own. Perfection was the game. Over the years, I have gone the cheap route with several sewing machines, only to be frustrated. Those machines all ended up as thrift store donations. Three years ago, I bought a better quality machine and took classes specifically for that machine. Success is mine! Now I gleefully sew on my machine. Not garments, but for crafting. I sew paper every which way with a huge smile on my face. Great tips on junk journal sewing!

Pam, you were the first one I watched on Junk Journaling. I am a Faithful follower! Long ago I saw you sew on paper. I must tell all others who have not tried this, it is one of the coolest things. Opens up so much more to do and looks. I've decided that Pam is just a Mad, Messy, Genius. I know she doesn't invent a lot of these techniques. But she certainly presents them in a unique and entertaining way. Makes me want to run to the craft room and lock the door with a Do Not Disturbed sign. Kudos Pam. You rock. P.S. There is never any reason for Thumbs Down unless you claim it and explain why. How is anyone suppose to react to that? For those who do this to anyone without an explanation is mean and cowardly. Sorry Pam for venting on your dime here. I just get so upset with useless responses. Never is tearing down of someone who is putting themselves out there an honorable act.

Sweet adventurous Pam, thank you for all the things you show us. May I share something with you. When you are sewing please have your needle up. If you have been sewing straight, and the needle is down, you switch to zigzag, it may break your needle. You machine may so much advanced in newness,it may not do this. I think you could make a beautiful apron--if you wanted to. I have a feeling you could do anything you set your mind to! May and your household of loved ones have a wonderful week. Much love and admiration.

Hi Pam, I noticed that your thread stuck on the bottom when you were removing your paper a couple of times, try turning your hand wheel a quarter turn and it should release the thread on the bottom. I learned this in quilting but I mostly use it when I am sewing paper. Thank you for all of your wonderful content!

I love that you love just how the stitches look. When my kids were small I use to do free hand embroidery with the machine on fabric. I wrote my kids names on their overalls. Well now this is me learning to make pretty things with paper. Last year I took up dumpster diving on two related dumpsters that I can get craft fabrics AND paper. The year before I did ceramics at the college. This Grandma tries a lot of stuff...

Pam and Sunshine, You asked about the sewing machine feed dogs (ALL machines have a feed dog setting). It is the tires for moving the fabric. All the way down (no tread to move the fabric so you have to push the fabric around with your hands). AKA free motion sewing. The higher the dogs the thinner the fabric is used. Therefore, only adjusted on really thin or really fat fabric. Otherwise put the setting in the middle and leave it alone. 🤔😁

I love to sew my craft, I did a wall hanging for my suplys like roolers and sisers and cutting matt etc. Sewingmashines can handel a lot. Some things I would recomend 1. Change the needle if you switsch between paper and fabrik 2. Clean the mashine more often than sewing with fabrik (recomended to me was every three month) 3. First stiches might be easier on fabrik than paper, just to see how the brand works 4. Fill a bobbin is fun 😉 5. Just try and find out

@@jmsl910 hi jmsl 910! It's a 17 stitch brother machine from Wal-Mart. Simple and easy to use. I bought it about 8 years ago for under $100.00. They still carry it but it's a little more expensive. Have you tried looking at your local thrift stores for an inexpensive one? The manuals are generally online; along with youtube videos on how to use them.

Pam, I just read through several dozens of comments, and, as I'm sure you know, you have inspired, encouraged and entertained your appreciative and genuinely nice viewers. I bought a sewing machine about eight months ago - still in its box. I am a universe-class procrastinator with things I hate doing - like vital and eternally aggravating paperwork. I decided, once I found mixed media junk journaling on KZbin, that I would have to complete all those nasty paperwork jobs before I could begin enjoying making fun and, hopefully, pretty things out of what other's would consider trash. In the mean time, I have collected all sorts and sizes of boxes; magazines, a handful of old books - dictionaries, travel brochures, etc., and other odds and ends. I have purchased equipment, tools, art supplies, digi kits .... So, whenever, I get those darn, nagging, aging tasks completed, I'm set to begin seeing what I can do - all of which will be the last Christmas, birthday, wedding, shower, just-because gifts for family and friends. As long as I can use scissors and have access to anything which will hold paper together, I can think of nothing quite as fulfilling as creating things to give as gifts. Even if the cards/journals/etc. turn out poorly, my loved-ones are the type who mean it when they say "Its the thought that counts. In the mean time, I am learning from you and a variety of people from all over. Not just about mixed media; but also about where and how y'all live. You and Sunny are always welcome features in my life. I appreciate all your talents, your pets - what is your parrot's name?, especially Sunny. You stay safe and well, and please, please keep on posting your creative, helpful, instructive, entertaining, open, and oh so special and uniquely funny videos. Love and hugs from SC USA.

My home economics 8th grade sewing: only time I've ever used a sewing machine. I was suppose to be making pot holders. I broke the needle completely in half! Nit once, but twice. The teacher never could figure out what in the word I did wrong. She had me do something else that did nit require me to use a sewing machine. Never used one since. However I've acquired a mini pixie sewing machine at a yard sale, so wish me luck!

I brought this same machine a yr ago for a great price but I ended up returning it bc I was very intimidated being new to junk journaling, well I replaced it with the same brand but a tad cheaper and finally gave it a whirl, and I love it so much and wish I had kept the 1st bc mine don't offer as many fancy stitches like the 1st. But I'm not complaining a bit. Thanks for the tips!!🦋

Fear is such a pain … If you’re a sewer with a high end machine…get a cheap “disposable” one from a thrift/2nd hand shop = no fear. (Extra layer- just try to break it- it’ll probably last forever, lol) If you’re not a sewer, machines can lock up and not work properly from lack of use… that’s no good. Nothing golden stays… nothing lasts forever. The point of having toys is to play with them. IF it breaks- what’s the worst that can happen? No machine? They can be fixed… they’re replaceable. Go for it 👍🏼 You got this 😉 😎

I'm going to let you know how lucky you are that you can use another bobbin other than the type that your Brother machine calls for. My "easy to use" Singer will not allow any other bobbin other than the #15 bobbin. It just won't work with any other bobbin! So, sew on Pam with your metal bobbin that doesn't go with your Brother! Thanks for the vid and the very quick appearance of the famous Sunny BOY! Love the 2 of you and all of your fab videos. au revoir et bonne chance

I have been unlucky with my sewing machine. I bought a Singer, a cheap one, thinking that I was doing a good investment and the zig zag stiches don't work at all. It doesn't matter the tension of the thread, it gets all tangled down and breaks; it jumps constantly and misses stiches. The paper looks awful with all the punches and no thread. I guess that is the reason why I avoid it. I just use it for simple stiches. Those work well (sometimes). But I love sewing and I am considering buying the one you have, Pamela. I've seen a lot of crafters using the Brother Runaway and the zigzag seems to work. I saw it comes with other very nice decorative stiches. We'll see how that goes.

i love that sewing has brought you so much joy....i have been sewing for many years and first learned on my mom's old treadle sewing machine and what i would not do to have my mom's old machine now. i currently have a brother as well and it has been my right hand for so many things and one of the first things i bought myself when i had babies. it works to this day and is hanging in there...if it could only tell the stories of my love while using this machine it would fill volumes.
