Thank you from Chicago. I am new to garment sewing, only knits for about 2 years & very excited to try woven patterns. Just ordered this pattern (first Tilly one), then found your excellent sew along, So many great tips! I’d love to see a sewalong for the Tilly Romy & any other patterns you want to do. Thank you again, so happy to have found you & your channel. 🙂

Brilliant first sew along Angela keeping to the original but adding techniques that elevate the garment to hand made rather than home made. As we start we all want as professional finish as we can - great standards- thankyou

Hi, I really enjoyed the whole video from start to finish, the one thing I would be interested in would be watching how you go about making the paper pattern pieces from the original pattern pieces so that you dont actually have to cut into the originals, if you get my gist. I know that people make their own paper pieces to save the originals but have never done it myself, so that would be great to see, thanks for the video...
@DevonThreadTales Жыл бұрын
Aaahh - ok, so I either print the pdf's so I csn literally cut them, and re print if needed. However, if I have a paper pattern, I use tracing paper and either that you buy on the roll or Burda pattern paper. Hope that helps 🥰

I primarily watch sew-alongs to see if I can pick up any tips. I've been sewing since I was 7 years old (mid- 1970s) when I received a "Kids" sewing machine for Christmas. I also appreciate when we are told the measurements of the person sewing the garment. It is helpful to see how the pattern fits. From your sew-along, I will take away the putting interfacing on pocket edges to keep them nice and crisp. I have done this for years when putting a zipper in, (I've never been a fan of the invisible zipper) but it never occured to me to do the same for a pocket! Thank you for that! P.S. Your daughters made to right call about the flounce and the waist tie placement.

And to answer your question, I usually watch sew alongs to get information. For the Indigo, I was interested in seeing how you gathered the shirt into the bodice, and to see if you made any pattern adjustments. I’m enjoyed your video-you have a lovely voice and have clear descriptions of every step.

Thanks for this sewalong Angela, I think you made it very clear and easy to follow as well as showing your warm personality. I would agree with you that sizing is one of the most difficult aspects when planning a make and I always like to know people’s measurements and what size they made, any grading etc to help me..... have made a few tents in the four years that I’ve been sewing! I’ve had the Indigo pattern a while but wasn’t sure it was for me - possibly another tent and too old for frills - but yours looks so good with the ties you have inspired me to have a go. I like the way you did it over a few days - that’s real life!
@DevonThreadTales4 жыл бұрын
Aaaah that's great to hear your feedback - thank you 🥰 He he he - I think we've all made a few tents in times gone by 😂. Sizing can be the hardest part. I hope that you have a go at the Indigo - and I hope you enjoy sewing it, and love wearing it. Ooooh my goodness - definitely real life 🙈. All the best laid plans in the world, and I still can't just sew something up in a day 😂 Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️❤️

This is a reality TV sew a long! 1) it doesn't always get done in one day 2) we substitute instructions with the techniques that work for us 3) Try on a you go 4) I also get my hip daughter's honest input before moving forward 5) Seam ripper always comes out 6) loop turner has mood swings 7) Ease is an amazing mystery 8) Hems get adjusted. The dress looks great. A slightly shorter skirt hem would look cute too but it's fine as is for your needs.

I really love your channel and this video. I have left my dressmaking and have concentrated on my quilt making and knitting over the last I don't know how many years. I used to make everything for myself, two girls and then sewed for my five grandchildren too. However, I have a new great grand daughter and have started making dresses and rompers for her. Watching this has prompted me to make something for myself again. I am going to make the Indigo dress exactly as you have - the tie and sleeves make it for me. So I will let you know how it goes. Off to search for some fabric now the shops have opened up again. Thanks for your calmness, great instruction and encouragement.

Thank you so much - really glad you enjoyed it. I'm so pleased that you feel like that - I just don't feel really comfortable with all the frills, and I sometimes worry that I'm being a bit boring! Sometimes simple really is just lovely and classic. Good luck with your sew - and thank you 🥰
@reneepasquale39174 жыл бұрын
It’s so funny- but after reading the comment about adding frills-I so agree that simple and classic can work best sometimes-especially with that style dress! Although I’m rather feminine (a ruffle and lace girl) in my home decor style -I tend to be more classic in my clothing style. I like to soften or expose my feminine side in dress by color and fabric choice -not necessarily style choice. I love to use color, pattern, and texture to reveal interest rather than lots of structure . I’ve always admired the Japanese and Swedish styles for this reason-tell the story simply and add visual interest in fabric choices and maybe add a few charming trims! It makes for simple, quick, and comfortable sewing and hides a multitude of sin! Just wanted to share my thoughts!❤️🧵✂️

Hello Angela, I have had this Tilly & her Buttons pattern now for two years and have been too frightened to actually open it. Today I finally cut out some fabric. I like watching how each individual step is done as well as any special techniques, and the chatter while they are doing it. That way I can learn how things are done, but if I already know that, it will still be fun to watch because of the chatter. Some only have the sewing, which is great when you want to know the techniques and steps, but I don't bother watching them if I don't need to know that at the moment or aren't making that pattern. If they make it interesting by chatting while they are doing it, I watch even if what they are sewing isn't important to me at the moment.
@sew_So_beautiful4 жыл бұрын
That being said, i dont like so much chatter that the person forgets to say what they are doing and why. The way you did it was perfect. Any sidetracked chatter could be added when nothing important in the sewing is going on, like while pinning, cutting out, or straight stitching long seams, or at a pause between steps.

Yaaay Angela, that was great 👏 I really enjoyed it. This is very much the sort of sew along I like. You talked us through the instructions and added your own tips which was very helpful. I enjoyed your witty asides and I also liked the fact that it took 3 days because many of us, like you, have other domestic/work commitment, so you showed just what can be done in the time available. I didn’t notice any problems with lighting either, I think the whole shoot was very clear. My style is similar to yours and I bought this pattern in a moment of over enthusiasm as I’d seen so many lovely versions. Since then it has remained untouched 😆. Your sew along has convinced me it’s definitely worth a go. It suits you Angela and the sleeves and length look good. Im looking forward to hearing what you think after you’ve worn it a few times x

Great sew along. I would really like to see you make a knit dress, showing choosing the fabric, cutting it out and, of course, sewing it. I haven't sewn a lot of knits and would like to get some tips before starting a new pattern. Thanks!

Well done Angela. I thoroughly enjoyed your first sew-a-long, congratulations, it was a huge success. I loved the finished garment especially with tights and boots, would also look nice a little shorter and with short flouncy sleeves, you could always make it in a plain material if you feel a little conspicuous in a style that you are not used to, i totally understand how you feel, but honestly, you look great in it and your girls will be proud to step out with you. You have even inspired me to purchase this pattern, and being 50+ it is not my usual style either😁. I would love to see another close up tuto of your 'turning out hook', i always struggle there and also a sew-a-long with hudson pants or another knitted material garment as that is new to me too. Many thanks for your time and patience as always.

Thank you so much - I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. I may take the dress up a bit after wearing it for a while, to see how I feel about it. Aaaahh that is so great - I'm so excited for you to have a go at the pattern ❤️ I will try and make sure I include the turning out hook again. My next tutorial is going to be a knitted garment 😊 Thank you so much again 🥰

Such a wonderful video! I’m especially impressed that it’s your first “sew a long”--you did a superb job! I always enjoy watching you -the sew a long added to the joy! A previous comment stated you feel like a friend -I agree -you are so welcoming, vibrant, and a true pleasure to watch! The dress (as usual) looks amazing! I just love the entire make. The fabric, pattern, color, and fabric flow work so well in the design. Your figure can handle the extra fabric -the dress looks fresh, modern and youthful! Honestly you looked like a teenager while modeling it! I absolutely loved it!!!❤️🧵✂️

Really enjoyed this Angela, you are a natural teacher. Loved all the extra helpful tips you included and your attention to detail when explaining them. I made this dress last month but didn’t feel ready to include the pockets but now having watched you explain how to do them I will give them ago. Your comment about too much fabric made me laugh as I too thought that and shortened my sleeves and dress length at the end. Personally I thought it was easier to see you and what you were doing with the blind closed although it was lovely to see sunshine. I’m sure this was a lot of work for you but the end result was excellent and I’m sure will be helpful to and enjoyed by many. Looking forward to when you have time to do another sew along 🧵 in the future. Thank you! X PS I thought the background music was great, not too intrusive and was uplifting 🌺🍀

Thank you so much 🥰. I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. Ha ha isn't that funny, I just think for me with the long sleeves it was a bit overwhelming. Great minds think alike 😂 Yes I totally agree, when I watched it back when editing, the blind being closed made a big difference. I will make sure to keep that in mind for next time. Thank you 😊. Thank you again for your really lovely comments, and encouragement, it really means a lot ❤️

You’re very brave to try a Sew along- kudos to you❣️. You did VERY well! I normally watch sew along to see how garments are constructed. Because pattern instructions are confusing for me it discourages me from sewing .The more I see Sew Along, the more I find myself trying and trying, so thank you for taking the plunge in recording your first sew along- it was very helpful👍🏻💕 As far as the dress, the fabric and color looks very nice on you. You did a great job on the Sew Along, keep up the great work!!

A great sewalong. Lovely to see someone else sewing over a number of days (I have to do this because of ME/CFS). Now you know the bodice fits you, you could think about putting the sleeves in flat before sewing the bodice seams. That way you seam the bodice and sleeves at the same time - I find that easier - but you probably already know that trick! The dress looks lovely on you - I'm very tempted to buy that pattern now! More sewalongs would be lovely. Thank you for your videos, which I enjoy immensely.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I must say I prefer putting the sleeves in flat too, so yes for the future that will be much nicer! 😂 Thank you so much, definitely more to come 🥰

This looks really lovely on you and you really suit blue. It will be lovely in the summer and looks especially nice with pumps for that perfect summer cool look. I know you have said in a previous video that you tend to avoid blue because of your school uniform being blue, but it really is your colour. Enjoyed this video and like you it is good to get a idea of sizing that others make. I also like to see any tips like the one you did by stitching in the ditch for the shoulder facing. I have never heard of this and really it makes a lot of sense and will be doing it in the future. Plus I like listening to you chatting about sewing and find it relaxing. xx By the way when you tried the top part on without sleeves, it really suited you with no sleeves.
@DevonThreadTales4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much - I agree, I think this will be perfect in the summer, lovely and cool! Thank you - I really do avoid royal blue normally for this reason, but I am getting more used to it, and I actually think I love it a bit more now 😂 I'm so glad you found it helpful and relaxing. That's really what I want these sew alongs to be, informative and friendly! 😊 He he - I think a no sleeve version would be nice. Thank you so much again 🥰

I think your first sew along was great! You've got a lovely manner. I like seeing how ppl do things differently, maybe how your mum taught you for eg. I like watching sew along while I'm sticking up patterns etc. It's always interesting seeing what fabric is paired with what pattern. TFS I look forward to when u can do another one ❤️👌

Thank you for this video. Just recently bought this pattern, and it will be a first make for me. I too won't be doing the frill version, due to being a bit Tubby. Love the way you do the gathering. Will try that too. Your finished dress is lovely. Hope I can get a good result too. I prefer that you have recorded the video in several parts and made in real time. Much easier for me to follow. Thank you. 👍🙂

Well done on a brilliant first sewalong Angela! Loads of detail and you got great close-ups of the actual sewing which is super helful. You explain all of the steps really well too and the finished dress is gorgeous on you. I LOVE the music and kept wishing there was a 'hunk' from 'Strictly' in the room wanting to swirl me around!! Bring on more sewalongs! x

I’ve really enjoyed this sew along and I love the final outcome! I really enjoy how you comment and include tips on how you prefer doing certain techniques etc. Really enjoy seeing all your creative input into a pattern. Would also like in future if you do make any mistakes to perhaps include them and show how you rectify that issue. Some things like that I really appreciate as it does happen to us all xx

Thank you so much! That is such lovely feedback to get - I really appreciate it ❤️ Aaaah yes - I will definitely include mistakes etc, we all have them, and it's frustrating when they happen, and you sometimes feel like the only one that it happens too, but its not at all!!! I will be sure to do this in the future. So glad you enjoyed it 🥰

Thank you for making this video Angela. I've fancied that pattern for a while so was interested to see how it turned out. I pretty much learnt to sew through KZbin videos and the thing I like best about them is the tips and tricks you can glean from them. Like how you prefer to under stitch and how you gather fabric. These are things you don't learn from a pattern, even ones as detailed as Tilly's. X

You are welcome, I'm so pleased you enjoyed and found it helpful 😊. I am very much the same, I learnt the very basics from my mum but since sewing as an adult I have learnt so much using KZbin. Thank you so much 🥰
