Excellent tutorial! I loved the idea of putting plastic over the foam and using suction to reduce it. I think that would be the most difficult part for me is inserting it inside. Thank you.

This video has the clearest and easiest instructions I have ever seen for a chair pad. The photography is amazing. I am wondering, though, if there is a way to make this chair pad with a zipper closure in the back, so that it is removable for washing, if using a cotton fabric. Do you have instructions or suggestions for how to do a zipper closure? Is there a way for this to be done before the piping is inserted, or the front and back sewn together?Thank you so much for making these videos.

for something this thin, prewash the material, make the cushion, and then just wash the whole thing. For thicker cushions, Sailrite has videos how to make cushions with zippers. There's a zipper video alone that I use for reference when making cushions.

Great video! I know it was some time ago but I would love to ask a question (first time attempting this). When sewing the top pattern to the bottom pattern (with the piping sandwiched in between) and the sewn in piping thread is visable - do you sew on top of, to the inside of, or to the outside of that already sewn piping thread 'guide'. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I’m going to try this! Great tutorial. How many yards of the material is needed to make 4 pads?
@SailriteDIY4 жыл бұрын
Typically the chairs are about 15" deep, it that is true for yours then you only need 2 yards of a 54" wide fabric tom make your 4 pads.

I have a question. I'm in the process of recovering the fabric on my padded kitchen chair seats, but one of the pieces of foam is rippled. Is there a way to get this wrinkle out or should I just buy new foam? Thanks!

If the chairs seat is deeper than yours in video, how it changes sew pattern, trying avoid upper wrinkles? Thanks

If I use one and a half inch thick foam, do I just add a half an inch to your seam allowance? It would then be one and a quarter inch.
@SailriteDIY3 жыл бұрын
Correct, that should work fine.

Ok i have cute out four pieces of bed foam to match my seats my question is how do I close it up and put tires on it to keep it good and I can take them off and wash them when I need to
@SailriteDIY3 жыл бұрын
If you want to take the covers off and wash them you will need to install a zipper opening in the cover.

Eric, my whole family is fairly... uhm... not lightweight! I'm concerned that a 1" foam would instantly bottom-out with us, even in extra-firm. A.) Is there a practical weight limit for this 1" foam? And B.) Could the same type of cushion be made with 2" foam, instead? (Or, would that require boxing?)
@SailriteDIY4 жыл бұрын
The 1" HD foam will last for years, even if used daily by stocky people, like myself. But your question is a matter of comfort and softness rather than longevity. So, would a 2" foam provide more comfort, yes it would. However, is you use a 2" High Density foam you will have to add a boxing, it it simply too thick of a foam to be sewn with two plates as shown in this video.

I just made a chair pad and my issue was that the stitches from the fabric covered piping showed up when I put the whole assembly together. I had to sew over everything on both side to make sure I sewed close enough to the piping so the stitches didnt show. Is there a trick to getting it right when sewing the whole assembly together ?
@SailriteDIY Жыл бұрын
The trick to making piping that does not show the stitch that was created when you make the piping is to feed the piping into the cording foot so the stitch is about 1/8" or so away from the piping. If using the Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ simply use the "Left, Center, Right" lever to move the stitch away from the piping (when making your own piping). Then after the piping is made you now move the stitch that sews all the finial assembly together closer to the piping. In doing this you will never see those stitches that were made when making or sewing the piping to the first plate, as they are about 1/8" away from the cording. The only stitch close to the cording secures the whole assembly. I hope this helps.

Yes, since the fabric is breathable we could wash this cushions and air dry it. The foam will eventually dry out in about a days time on the line.
