I changed my differential feed to 1.5 and serged the bottom of my knit top before hemming it. It worked amazingly well for not having to fuss while trying to ease in extra fabric when turning up the hem. I had planned on using Wonder tape, which I love, but this worked so well and was faster and cheaper. Thanks for the great tips, Lucy!

I know, right. I just spent an entire evening unpicking a detailed part of a top to renew it and it was a real mission. This makes so much more sense

Most times you can just pull the needle thread through. Unpick without cutting the needle thread for about 6-8 stitches (enough to get a good grip), then break/cut the needle thread about 30 cm (12 inches) down the seam . Then pull the tail of the needle thread you just released. Repeat these steps along the whole seam. Sometimes the thread breads depending on the tension you have set or if the length of the stitch is too short but essentially this works for me every time.

When using the tapestry needle I feed the eye end first. That way there is no catching of the tip in the fabric making it much faster to feed through.

Hi I use a Hemline knit snag repair tool that looks like a miniature latch hook to run through the last bit of overlocking to hook the tail and pull it back under the threads, this saves trying to thread a tapestry needle.

Ty for a serger refresh as well as those that share in the comments. Often i just tie a knot at the end of the serging getting it as close as possible then clip off excess. For a really secure seam I will single needle the tail back over the end of the seam.

What do you mean when talking about a 'cover lock' machine? Also, will these tips work on non stretch fabrics say cottons or polyester type? Thanks love your vids - presentation both verbal and visual. I always learn something from your tutorials 😊 👍
@SewEssential7 ай бұрын
a coverlock machine is a combined overlocker and coverstitch machine, yes they will work on woven fabrics, although the overhanging looper threads shouldn't happen because the stretch in the fabric causes those so it wouldn't really happen on a woven fabric

I secure the overlocker threads with a tool of the size of an unpicker but with the end of a loop turner. You may know how it is called in English, it is a tool used to repair ladders in stockings, knits in general.

Hi, with the looping, will that work on woven fabric too or is that another issue? 🙂
@lizlisle736110 ай бұрын
I was wondering about that too. I made a circular skirt and couldn't contemplate turning up and sewing the five metres of hem of the underskirt so I overlocked the edge and much of it had looper threads hanging over. I guess a fair bit of the edge would be off grain so liable to stretch.

If you are using a Babylock overlocker and threads are hanging off the edge of the fabric check to see if you have accidentally left the stitch selector on A, moving it to B can fix this issue. Recommended when using the right O2 needle

If you sew a dart either on overlocker or sewing machine from the point and first stitch starting before fabric, you'll get a straighter dart and thread will self knot.

Am I thick, or what? I've been using my very basic, entry level overlocker, mostly happily, for a few years but it never occurred to me to raise the needles, as well as the foot, to position the fabric. 🤔 Revelation! Thanks Lucy!

The cuff sewing trick is not really that good. It’s better to make it with a sewing machine, the bulk is smaller and the sides aren’t uneven. The rest is really helpful, thanks a lot!

If anyone understands the English language the prefix “un” means (added to adjectives, participles, and their derivatives) denoting the absence of a quality or state; not. "unabashed.” So people who use the term unpick don’t understand the English language because that’s not what you’re doing. You’re actually ripping out the stitches you’re not unpicking anything , you are actually picking out the stitches. Same as the people who keep saying back tack instead of backstitch. Tacking is the action of the needle staying in place not moving backwards and forward. My machine has a button for tacking and I can assure you my needle is not moving except up and down ie: stationary. That’s your English lesson for today. 😀😀
