It's Costume Season!!! It's also a time of pandemic and economic poopiness. What's a girl to do? Time to sew a dress- obviously! But not just any dress. It's time to make a dress like those worn by women living in another troubled time- the Depression of the 1930s! Will this dress be a costume, clothing, or simply an interesting historical research project? Let's find out! :)
I purchased the pattern from

It turned out quite cute, more figure flattering than the picture suggested.

Hi, I know it's been a couple of years since you made this dress but I have a couple of thoughts that may be of assistance in general. You mentioned that you often find that the armscye on patterns are too high. Once you find a shape that is suitable for you, try copying that armscye onto cardboard and transpose that shape onto all future patterns - that way you know the pattern is going to be comfortable for you. I would also do the same with a sleeve head once you have one of those that fits. You can always make any aesthetic adjustments to the sleeve itself to reflect the particular pattern but you know the sleeve head will fit into your well fitting armscye. If you have a fabric that slips around while you are trying to cut it, try spraying the living heck out of it with spray starch and then press it. It will help stiffen that fabric for the laying out and cutting process and make life much easier. Also, the spray starch washes out on the first laundering and you get the lovely flowy and delicate texture of the fabric back again. You were right on the money when you said that the collar flipping up etc was probably due to you encasing it with bias tape and leaving it exposed. What you have done extend that portion of the pattern and changed how it sits on your body. Normally what would be done is that the bias tape would be sewn to the edge of the fabric and then flipped to the inside of the dress and stitched down, which means the seam allowances are on the inside of the garment. The dress looks great and I hope you had many good times wearing it.

I did enjoy watching this and your thought processes. It turned out well. Also 2/3rds of sewing seems to be seam ripping and finally I zigzag or pink edges a lot. Its totally historical (since zig zagging was invented). Loved the dress. I would have thought about sewing in a modesty panel after.

So glad you enjoyed it! :) Gotta love all the seam ripping/zig-zaging/pinking/adjusting in sewing! lol! Great idea to add the modesty panel!!

If you added a snap at the neckline, could you make the wrap meet so that the neckline is higher?
