This video was awesome. I'm a new subscriber and a beginner sewer and you are truly an inspiration. The fact that you did much of the major construction of this jacket using the serger is absolutely stellar! I love your post-construction commentary and how honest you are about any flaws in your garment as well as lessons learned from previous makes. My sewing circle of friends and I have decided that we're going to 'binge-watch' all your sewing-related videos this weekend!

A few suggestions; sharp, quality scissors; baste the zip before sewing; use a 5/8 seam allowance; don't forget to include seam allowance on every seamed edge; with your slopers, for the most part, you only need half the sloper and cut on folded fabric to ensure symmetry. Great work though and love seeing a man sewing!
@CorneliusQuiring
@CorneliusQuiring 5 жыл бұрын
Those are all great tips, thank you. I've been hearing more about the importance of a good pair of sheers recently so that is my next investment. I make my sloper different on both side to reflect the difference in arm sizes due to an accident as a child. Thank you again.

I have been sewing for about a year now, but I haven't attempted any garments yet. So now I have bought some patterns and the different fabrics required are a little confusing. Could you do a video on fabric types and how you decide what to use, and what can be substituted etc? The jacket I want to make is very similar to yours, so a video on the different types of fabrics, for different types of garments would be so helpful!
@CorneliusQuiring
@CorneliusQuiring 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea. I could definitely do a video of this sort. I will add it to my list. For me, I find biggest difference in fabrics is knits vs. weaves. Something I can get into in the video :) Thanks for the suggestion.

My pleasure. 1 thing I would recommend though is in that first step where I sewed a rectangle, don't sew the two small bits on the end. Just two straight long lines.
@MarronStone
@MarronStone 5 жыл бұрын
@@CorneliusQuiring but if you don't sew those bits, how will it close neatly?
@CorneliusQuiring
@CorneliusQuiring 5 жыл бұрын
@@MarronStone the reason for not seeing the two ends is so that when it is flipped right way round, everything folds neatly into place. It's a bit hard to describe in just words. I recommend trying it with some scraps.

Tip: - It'd be sooo much simpler,easier & more accurate/symmetrical,if you folded all pieces in 1/2 & did your alterations on just the right or left 1/2,before cutting. That way both right & left sides come out exactly the same - completely symmetrical.🤷
