I’ve never been confident enough to make my own Renaissance costume. I’ve deconstructed to reconstruct pieces but your friendly video really puts me at ease. Thank you for sharing.

I would definitely like to see a more in depth tutorial for this type of skirt. I think this skirt looks amazing, and I would love to learn how to make one.

Von another way to finish the edges of the tulle is use is to use a curling iron, or you can put fusible thread in one of the loopers of you serger and serge all the edges and then press this will seal the edges, and depending on the other threads you use can give a bit of shine to the edges

The white netting reminds me of cobwebs. I love the overall effects of the fabrics. Beautiful!

a couple serger tips to help you in future projects ^.^ 1) make sure your differential dial (normally the bottom dial of the 2 on the side i think) is at 1. if its less than 1 (ie 0.75) then it flares out the stitches while sewing. if its more than 1 (ie 1.5) then it gathers the material. 2) an easier way of rethreading the serger is (starting with the right most ones) cut the thread from the spool but dont remove from machine yet, then get your new thread and tie them together. do this for both right threads and leaving the needle threads for now, press the foot until the new thread is visible in the stitching, then change the needle thread. this should save loads of time and headaches. a bodkin will help pull elastics through much quicker and they are relatively cheapish and fabric shops or craft shops should have them. hope these tips help you von. keep up the lovely work ^.^

I've found that adjusting the tension on the foot helps with the machine gathering light weight materials.

14:12 i use a little (unscented) tea light candle. that way it's stationary and i can just move the fabric across the flame. 😊 (i do this on the counter right next to the sink, in case i have to abort lol)

I've made about five dolls and their accompanying clothes/accessories, I find it a great way to use up fabric scraps, but it does have its own little bite because everything's so small and needs more concentration than human-sized stuff (in my case), but it's a great past-time anyway :D Regarding pleats, you can also use a fork to get uniform and easy pleats Ps. I love your tutorials, you're just so fun and relaxing to listen to

oooo, I love the fork idea! I will have to look into that!

Have you tried using the rolled hem plate on your serger. It’s awesome for light fabric hemming, and you can use contrasting threads as well. Also, your serger has a feed adjustment to take out the gathering you are experiencing. Lovely work.

Love this!! Will definitely have to do this for my renaissance fair skirt...I’m going as a witch but the skirt I bought from the thrift store wasn’t what I was looking for....something more like “I’ve been living in the woods collecting stuff for 20 years” kind a thing. 😂😂😂

Hey Von, it might be easier to light a candle, then move your fabric along to seal the edge instead of trying to hold the lighter and the fabric. And, would sewing a drop bead to each low point of your blue netting hold it down enough to keep it from snagging your gauze? Loving watching you create this costume!

Von try using an heat embossing gun to seal your ledgers instead of a flame. The flame could cause the fabric to burst into more flames. I want to see your wonderful work for a long long time.

I make a similar skirt for our local ren fair and the skirt is gathered to the waistband and the elastic gathers the waistband as well so it is really full.
@cynthiahowe86977 жыл бұрын
If you are going to work with that thin material alot, instead of burning the edge to keep it from fraying or serging it, there is a hot knife or scissors that you cut the piece out with and it will seal the edges as you cut the pieces out. A gentleman I know that sells garb at fair has a set and has offered for me to come to his workshop and rent various tools that I can't afford. I also make the casing for the elastic to fit the width of the elastic sometimes using two casings and 2 lengths of elastic to make the waistband lay better and not have so much fabric to bunch up under the corset. It gets uncomfortable.

@backtoearthcreations5 жыл бұрын
Hey, Kalyn! Its not necessary at all! You can substitute the serged hem with a rolled hem or and overlock stitch (many times I have also just folded the hem over twice, pinned, and run a straight stitch!)

using a safety pin to thread is how my mom taught me. If you put another safety pin into the free end and pin it to your project you won't pull the free end into your project and lose it.
@cottew6 жыл бұрын
An easier way to re-thread your serger is to tie on your new thread and pull it through. 😉
