This is an excellent idea. Never thought of sewing directly to the wood. I have always sewn two pieces of cloth or canvas together with a stiffener in between then stitch on the zipper. I have used velcro strips insted of a zipper in a pinch and it works also, just a bit more of a pain when opening and keeping aligned when closing.

I agree. Zips are great. The ones I use are marine grade no. 10 zips. I make bags and add 3 ply or neoprene to stiffen some designs.
