A small addition to the segment around 29:00 about doing it all yourself: It’s easy to forget that making one dress (or whatever garment) often involved not just multiple professionals, but multiple professions. The tailor/dressmaker was rarely also the embroiderer or the milliner. Even in modern couture houses, rarely does one person do it all. So when you’re trimming your fancy dresses and embroidering your waistcoats, remember that you’re taking on the work of multiple professionals - for your own enjoyment.

I’m going to preface this with I’m old and when I was young I was so upset with a pattern that I called the maker on a phone mounted on the wall😂. I talked to a nice lady and when we were done she basically told me they use fit models and I was too large and tall😢. Lesson learned was now I customize every pattern to fit me before I start. I wish was a quick fix I could recommend but someone smarter than I will have to come up with that.

I'm procraftinating starting a whole Regency ensemble by luceting some cord for trim to go on a wool Spencer. I'm dealing with ME/CFS so being constantly low on energy makes the startitis even worse, and doing small projects sitting on the sofa, watching through all your old vlogs is both helpful and inspiring. It was actually serching YT for videos on making Regency stays that led me here. Came for specific content, stayed for the entire personality. Epic win for an introvert to find a chatty extrovert doing vlogs, doesn't matter that the conversation is a bit one-sided as long as you have fun making them and we all have fun watching them. ❤

"What am I doing wrong as a maker?" It might not be you. Every time I tried to line up curves with each other (princess seam for example) I'd wind up with one side that behaved and one side that didn't. It's gotten better since I walked my seams (heavily modified pattern for my shape) and found one was out a quarter-inch, and also I don't mark my seam allowances anymore, I mark my stitch lines. Makring the stitch lines has definitely improved my sewing accuracy.

Yay for asymmetical bodies-- and the ability to tailor clothes to make them look like the fit like a glove! I was thinking that excess on the outer fabric probably is done on purpose. There is always easing in quilting...well in my version there is. So, that's what makes me think the easing was intentional so that the seam allowance was wide enough (and also to give it strength).

Until you mentioned it. It’s not a horrible thing that projects get lost in the shuffle. Real life has a nasty habit of mucking up plans. I have a couple projects on the back burner that I really should get back to. My son wants a dress shirt. He’s even bought the material. Once the grandson finds out he’ll want one as well! I’ve been spring cleaning. Though I’m being hampered by needing to fix my closet. I spend half my time discovering that I can’t do this until I do that! I’m also losing an argument with my washer. I’m not reading anything right now but I did just buy Murder with Peacocks by Donna Andrews. My friend has been talking about it for years and it was on sale at audible so yeah. I guess I should read it. I made her pick up May Sage’s Wicked Crown series cause I want to talk to her about it. So I should pick up one of the series she talks about. She didn’t tell me it was like 30 or so long now! We’ve been friends for almost 40 years now so she puts up with my bossy ways 😅

That little "bite" adjustment on the armpit edge of the strap (@32:14) is the exact same adjustment I want to make to several things i own! I think it's got something to do with the relative distance between the underbust and the armpit, like the design expects there to be more space there than there really is, or maybe they expect the arm to be much larger than it is. Congrats on getting this project done! It truly is the cutest jacket and cutest hat! Today was meant to be a rest day after getting an appointment but adhd brain struck and suddenly I was cutting up my flanno to make it into a crop version, as I'd been half planning to since I bought it last Winter as we're starting to creep into cold weather again. I was just finishing off the new hem when this video started in my watch later, and it felt really appropriate to have your "company" while I worked through it. Both because your grunge dress, but also the theme of this video. While I had been able to wear the flanno for the year, I have spent many hours pondering what the process will be to make the change, while working on other projects or being side-tracked by life. Classic scope creep has entered the ring though, the sewing is finished but I realised I have some cute pink buttons to replace the "classic" brown buttons, because I didn't mention already: it's a hot pink and white flanno. So so comfy and ridiculous, and going to be so much better for having cute buttons too.

I saw this coat on Insta. It's so cute on you!!!! It looks so eastery... to be more secular, spring-y!...could it be....? That's what you were going for? You said the fabric was from Colonial Williamsburg... this is recreated from a period example, I assume. So interesting. It looks so fitting for a kimono, too. I made the hat you encouraged me to make. I'm currently on a history thread on my own insta, but I will tag you when I get to it. I turned out nice. I hope it will serve its purpose through those HOT summer months. Can't wait. I understand about putting off projects. For me, sewing is a hobby rather than a job, so when the job calls, the sewing gets put back a bit. I have this flannel kimono that I want so bad, but I've been putting it off for almost a year now. I have the fabric and everything. I just... you know when the time is just not right? That is my flannel kimono project. I really want it though. No, instead I am trying to get more performance videos up on my channel. I am a traditional storyteller, but I have been off because of the pandemic and my health. Even if the tulip shaped patch pockets are waiting till I get home. Love the bodice! It's so pretty! and I have serious envy for your hat!

This turned out great! And your backyard is so pretty!! I am indeed old enough to remember movie phone, along with digging through the newspaper to find movie times. Which reminds me, I had to explain to my 9 year old niece how tv used to work before streaming was a thing. Not sure if she really understood, lol. 😂

I have an almost 7 yr old and I have to do the same for him for TV and also for the radio. “I’m sorry I can’t skip this song, it’s not Pandora.” He had declared that the radio is “stupid”.

Your right it's the cutest and you look adorable in it! 😊🩷 And what a lovely garden to stroll in my lady. Very pretty hat for your collection. The 2 1/4 yds, did it shrink a lot after u wash & dryed? The pleated skirt was the additional prob. Is there anyway you can slice off the shoulders on Judy? Tambour beading is hard I found (though) I do need to practice more...and the French petite main do it from the back...prob why it's hard . I'm always in awe of those who write books!

😊 thank you! And that hat doesn’t get to belong to me! It’s Lynn’s beautiful creation, but I do get to ask to borrow it if I need it, which is just as wonderful!

This turned out so cute! I'm currently doing the main construction seams on a wool tunic for my boyfriend. Not really the season for wool anymore, but it's something I have the supplies for that I'd like to get off of my list. I'm going to repurpose the brocade trim from an older tunic that was badly stained in places, so he will have a second cold weather tunic.

I sew on a medieval dress or two when it comes to pieces, one in linen and one in wool. needs very little corrections on the sleeves and laying them out, the next thing is a ball top for my 1883 dress i am reading harry potter and the half blood prince with my daughter. things I watch the office with my husband, outlander and whit coller in the evening to sleep

I love how this came out! You did a great job with the sleeves As for what I'm working on, I'm currently juggling undergraduate homework with sewing the ribbons onto my second ever pair of pointe shoes. And possibly dyeing them purple, because who doesn't want purple pointe shoes! :D

I'm so glad you finished this project! My 1890s costume is progressing slowly (I finally finished the insertion lace on the petticoat) as I've been spending more time reading, writing and travelling this year. I'm in the middle of "A Day of Fallen Night" by Samantha Shannon - an epic fantasy about women fighting dragons.

@@Costuming_Drama It's a prequel to Priory of the Orange Tree, which was also about women from all over the (fantasy) world teaming up to defeat an ancient dragon. The books are very long, but they're also stand-alone - not a long series.

I had the same issues with the side pieces not lining up at the waist and also had to fudge. Assumed my linen was too squishy but maybe not! Very cute btw!
