Can't wait to see you in your new home.

Kathy, thank you! I loved the shell in the end, next time I make it, I will show the before pictures, cause it was downright ridiculous! I promise, I am not as hard on myself as it seems, I just want you guys to have my full honest opinion on the patterns because it is something that I personally appreciate when I look at reviews before I sew something up. So, take my word for it, I am not over here berating myself because something turned out badly, I promise! I will definitely do some road trip scenes, its my favorite part of being an American!

Meowzer and the dog already went on their roadtrip, so they are safe and sound in AZ already, I will be footloose and fancy free and able to really take my time and screw around with my route! By the way, Meowzer assaulted the driver of the pet transpo van and she had to pull over on the side of the road to get her claw out of her jacket hood. Turns out she wanted a treat.

I would love to see Colorado, if it weren't for the flight across the pond, I would offer to come with you ! Show us the mountains. I quite liked the pink fabric, perhaps with full "war paint " on it would look brighter next to your skin. Winter makes us all look dreary.
@SewingatMidnight5 жыл бұрын
Lorna, I promise I will show you the mountains! I have driven across the Rockies before, but I was driving through Wyoming when I did it last time and it was truly breathtaking. I wish I could bring you with me, but I do recommend a trip to northern Italy, they also have some really beautiful mountains that are really majestic as well, and much closer to you! I was in Aviano for a work trip and it was awe inspiring up there. I think there is beauty in everyone's backyard, we just have to notice it. Wait till I get some AZ sun, I will get nice and golden before you know it!

love your makes. I made B6388 in four different fabrics, all with NO POCKETS! It's a great pattern for winter. I noticed that one of the fabrics didn't do well. It was thin and wrinkled a lot. The sweatshirt material looked the best, really kinda of dressed it up. Next time I will add some inches to the length.

Good luck with your move :-) Hope it goes smoothly and you come back online soon. Ya, going through Colorado will be awesome, though the snow can be hazardous. I drove the freeways going to and from skiing in a two wheel drive vehicle and did fine. BUT I hope you have studded tires or chains. FYI, pack a heavy coat, gloves, hat, heavy snow boots (hand warmers and down sleeping bag) for warmth in case traffic is stopped and it can stop for hours and hours.

Granted, we have different body types, you’re much curvier than I am. You’ve been productive and I have to say I admire you for making actual practice garments in scrap fabric. I bought the same heathered pink from FMF. Yes! It’s so soft! I may have half a yard around if you want to try making the belt. Toaster Sweater - I actually like it on you, but the reasons why you don’t like it are why I made the version with the polo neck. Does the Simplicity version of the pattern include that view? You might want to try it ... you may need it in Colorado! Good luck with the drive. And yes - love hearing about your life!
@SewingatMidnight5 жыл бұрын
Hi Janine! Glad you liked the stuff, that pink knit is so soft, it feels like I'm wearing a cloud, now the color isn't the most flattering on me, but I can live with that, on you, I think it will be absolutely gorgeous! I don't think the Simplicity version of the toaster has the polo neck. I think it has the funnel and the crew/scoop type of neck, but I don't have the pattern in front of me to check. Now, I will only be passing through Colorado, so maybe for the day that I am there I will dig that top out of the back of the car, then as soon as I hit the Arizona state line, chuck it in a rest stop trash can!!!

I love that Butterick 6388 without the pockets! Remember when I made my version with the pockets? I hated it! I gotta make it without the pockets! I love the fabric choice! That Burda pattern is cute too! I disagree! It's very flattering! I also like that vogue 9055! That would be a great pattern for me. I'm trying to make my way to more practical sewing patterns! That's definitely a keeper! Thanks for sharing.

Tea, I read a lot of reviews that said to skip the pockets on that dress, and they were all right, so I know what you mean! You gotta try it again without them, you will love it! Practical sewing is great, but I think we really get to remember why we love it when we shoot for the moon, so I like to keep a good mix going. I think you need to give 6388 another shot though, it is my winter TNT this year!

Love the plaid tunic, so cute! I like the New Look wide neck knit top pattern but I’ve never made the shell. And gosh, that Toaster/Sew House Seven sweater...boo...I heard from people who had the same trouble with the neck band that I did (for View D) and I chalk that up to shoddy drafting. I won’t be repeating that top, I don’t like how it looks on me either. Great roundup of cute stuff!!

Thanks Viv, I ended up really liking that shell, I don't have a whole lot of layering tops like that and I could definitely use some more. That toaster sweater sucks! I don't know why everyone loves it so much.

Sewing at Midnight I did‘ like that version of the toaster, but I LOVE the funnel neck version. I’d like to lengthen it like the wonky neck version, too.
@sharonaliza89845 жыл бұрын
Ok, so I actually watched to the end. I guess the version I made wasn’t the funnel. Anyway, the one I made is short,which would look good on you. I need the longer version (no hips on this girl - all belly!). Also, those tops you made from the fabric you don’t like all looked to good on you. The body hugging fabric really works on your figure.

You might like ITY knits more in AZ. I wear them constantly in the summer in WA state where the summer humidity is low, but I cannot tolerate then in DC they don’t breathe well enough. You did a great job with everything!! That black and white Burda top is extremely flattering on you, though we couldn’t really see the hem. When I made one of those twist front tops , I think it was McCalls, anyway I could not make sense of the directions. I finally took the shirt and directions down to my husband , who is an engineer, and said pretend this is sheet metal, and help me figure this out! Once it made sense, it really made sense, but it twisted my brain. You have been sewing up a stor,!
@SewingatMidnight5 жыл бұрын
Carole, I was actually ok with the directions, maybe its because I have a mechanic's brain, LOL. I just think I would do better with a fabric that had a less obvious wrong side, that's where my issues were with the twist. It took me a solid couple of minutes messing with it to hide the wrong sides that were showing in the twist. If I end up wearing it a lot, I will maybe make some more if I can figure out a work around to the back neck. Ugh it was making me crazy!!!!

I like the first long sleeve Burda. Super cute.I know you didn't like it, but I thought it looked so good on you and I didn't notice the hem weirdness. The Toaster looks different from mine. I bought the pattern from the designer (not the Simplicity version) and made what I THINK is the same view, and my side slits don't go up that high at all. I also have a little issue with the funnel neck, but it's not too bad. I have been wearing mine during the freezing cold weather we have been having here and they are cozy. But ya. I get it. Happy sewing!
@SewingatMidnight5 жыл бұрын
Natasha, I have heard from multiple people that the original is way better than the Simplicity verson, so I wont bash it too hard anymore, LOL. I do love a cozy sweater, but I think I will let the B6388 pattern be my go-to cozy sweater.

Connie, lace could fix up the slits, but I also hate the collar on me. I just don't want to sink any more time or materials into something that I don't like. If I loved everything else about it, it would be a different story. But that's a good idea and I will try it in the future!

Loved that first pink top too! Sewisfaction did a tutorial on the tilly buttons dress that is a twist top (similar if not the same as the one youve done), with particular attention to showing how to ensure the wrong side doesnt show, might be worth checking out. Great catch up! x

We are our own worst critics, I try to be super honest about my thoughts on the things that I make so that anyone who wants to sew them has an idea of what they are up against. I know that honest reviews help me a lot when I am sewing something for the first time, so what you get here is the honest truth. I was also pleasantly surprised with the shell top! You should have seen how bad it was, the whole top half of the shirt looked like it was melting. LOL! Hello funny girl! Loved seeing your makes and comments - especially the “larger base” reference. Cracked me up. I’m at the end of the world today - literally. Ushuaia, Argentina. Basically Antartica. Weird. Today we’ll visit a penguin rookery. Missing my sewing! I’ll be back in 1 1/2 weeks. Hope your travels through Colorado are awesome and safe. Come to Oregon and visit me - I’ll show you some mountains (and my sewing rooms)! Hugs..

Loriann, you and your husband are my globetrotting dream couple! I don't know how Tim thinks our retirement should look, but I will tell him stories of you and convince him that that is our future! Also, I loved what I saw of Oregon, I lived on the Puget sound in Washington for 5 years and it was so beautiful that it took my breath away. I had the opportunity to see a little bit of Oregon while I was up there and I would love to see more!
@loriannpayne44835 жыл бұрын
Oh - that is so awesome that you got to live in the Puget sound area of WA. Oregon is basically like WA but without a sales tax - woo hoo! I’m a little bummed at the moment. We were supposed to spend the day in the Falkland Islands, but a nasty storm was on our tails and the waves were becoming increasing rough so the captain went near the port and back out again. I was so looking forward to hearing the English accent again. This cruise is roughly divided up about 40% Americans, 40% Spanish countries, and 20% Germans. Lately we’ve been seated next to Germans so I’ve been practicing my high school German on them. They don’t think that I know German so they have long conversations around us. Before we leave our table, I usually say something in German to them which always shocks/surprises them! Cracks me up. Mostly, they’re delighted that someone tries to speak their language. Tee hee. Can’t wait till you get settled in to your new home. Hope it has a wonderful sewing room/space for you.

I did love the flannel top on you, it was a great sew and the boat neck top too.. I must check the patterns out.. Your pink fabric is nice... fabric looks interesting and pretty up close and does look good on you but from a distance it looks bland ... Girl you got your sew on in that empty house and Tim gone. Lol. You're way too hard on yourself though. I wish I was half as good as your so called fails. Lol. Hope everything is going well with all you have going on with the move. You and Burda have a love hate relationship seems to be. Haha I've never tried Burda and I'm sure I probably never EVER will. I do love that toaster sweater but I'm the same way about certain things, I couldn't wear half the things you can anyway so there is that! Whichever way you decide to go I would be interested in seeing, especially if you take Tim's recommendation because I truly want to hear what you have to say after your trip. LOLOL. I absolutely love your personality. We would get along so well, may be...or cause...a little trouble but we'd sure have fun doing it . All in fun though. Happy packing 😊😊

Thanks Peggy! I just like to give honest reviews, and sometimes things don't turn out well because of me, sometimes because of the pattern, sometimes because of the fabric, but I like to lay it all out there so that you guys can make informed decisions if you decide to sew something you have seen me make. So, I promise I am never too hard on myself, its like pulling teeth trying to even take myself seriously sometimes! I do both love and hate burda, I like their drafting, and I like a lot of their patterns, but sometimes the instructions are really insane. Usually I don't have this much trouble though! Thanks for watching and maybe we will meet some day and stir up some shenanigans!

@@SewingatMidnight I love your honesty and love the way you put it out there. I could listen to your reviews all day. Lol. It would truly be a pleasure to meet you and spend the day just talking to you. We'd sure have a great time I believe. I really do enjoy watching your videos, it makes my day when I get a notification. I do appreciate your honesty, it helps me not make the same mistake in fabrics in chosing patterns or what I may need to do if I decide to go with a pattern you've made and that saves me a lot of time so I really do appreciate it.

I should have used the red side, I may have been happier with the final results at least on the vogue top. I think I look nice in red, but I felt like the side I used really made me look sickly. So, if you have a skin tone similar to mine, dear god, use the red side!!!

Nikki, the polka dot shell is super cute! The pleat in the neck really adds to the original boring pattern! Super slimming on you even in the leggings! lol The Burda patterns, they both look awesome on you, the fitted style really sets off your figure! I think with your talent you can make them work; all three of these prints I could see with black dress pants for interviews or more dressy events! The toaster sweater, what about lengthening the torso and grading it out so the flaps lay flat and maybe a thinner fabric would make the funnel cowl more! LMAO your sign-off is hilarious! Give it all to us! Btw there is a huge fabric place in Ohio you should stop into before heading north, I heard about it in another video last night, Zinck's. I hear it has awesome sales and lots and lots to choose from! Btw, if you provide me with your new address, I will provide you with Canadian Smarties as a house warming gift! lol

I was thinking I needed some more dressier tops in case I work some where that is fancier than my current gig. For reference I am currently wearing coveralls that smell like jet fuel that have holes in the crotch... So, its good to know that I had some success! As far as the toaster sweater goes, there are too many new fun patterns out there for me to force it to work, so I am chalking it up as a learning experience and calling it a day, lol. I just googled Zincks and I may actually do a stop in the Indiana location, I think it would fit in best with my route. I will have to see how I am doing on time, but hell yeah!

How do " Canadian " Smarties differ from the real Smarties ? What does LMAO and BTW mean ?
@cecilehoare30535 жыл бұрын
Canadian Smarties are brightly coloured candy coated chocolate discs a bit smaller than a dime (like plain M&M's), American Smarties are sweet/sour tiny little discs in pale shades of colour, we call these Rockets, not sure if that is a trademark name or the producer but that's what we call them! LMAO= Laugh my a$$ off, BTW= by the way.
@cecilehoare30535 жыл бұрын
I bet the "American Picker's' would love those coveralls they seem to snatch them up pretty frequently on their show! lol Glad you checked out Zinck's, I had to laugh, just as I was typing the previous message to you about the store, Hubs asked, 'why is there huge fabric outlet's from Ohio coming up on my Pinterest feed?' I told him I had no idea because I don't use his laptop but talk about co-inky-dinks! Getting into Pharmaceuticals you will likely be in scrubs all day and not needing fancy clothes, but then you will really want to rock the fashions on your down time! Be safe on your travels-we want you back online safe and sound!

@@cecilehoare3053 We have Smarties here,had them since the early sixties. Small round and brightly coloured coating over milk chocolate. Much nicer than M&M's, ours are sold in tubes. Shorten the blouse. Have you tried the Anderson blouse from Sew Over It?
@SewingatMidnight5 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried that one, I could shorten it, but I don't think the problem is the length, I think its the layers of fabric that are causing all the trouble. Someone told me to try putting a band on it. I do like the look of the Anderson blouse, very similar!

I bought the Simplicity "toaster" pattern and hated it. It really isn't anything like the Sew House 7. I've wondered how they get away with calling it a toaster. That funnel neck with the weird fold is awful and I have worn it backwards. The only way I could tell is because the shoulder seams should be facing the back.

That's what I hear, Susan. Apparently Simplicity did not do a very good job! I cant even imagine why they would have to change it!

Just a thought, are the Burda instructions poor due to the translation ? They originate in German and are translated into many languages. My friend specialises in sorting bad german translations for companies and I have seen her work wonders with someone else's terrible work. Translating instructions is an art in its self added to which the germans are taught to sew from a very young age and are used to far briefer instructions than we are. I have 2 German grand daughters and have discussed this with them.
@SewingatMidnight5 жыл бұрын
Totally possible. I think they tend to be too brief in the tricky spots and more verbose than necessary in the easy spots. It is very strange.

Love tour pink dress. Check out Sew Pretty Kitty’s channel if you have time, she made a spotty wrap top very similar to yours (not sure if it was the same pattern), but also had probs which she sorted for the next one. I always have the problem you had with the top you put the pleat in. Of I choose a size big enough for my bust and body it is far too wide at the top, far more than can be dealt with by a narrow shoulder adjustment. This has stopped me sewing clothes at the moment, as I cannot find the answer to it!
@SewingatMidnight5 жыл бұрын
You know Sara, normally I choose my size in Big 4 using the Nancy Zieman method, which ignores the bust measurement. If I went by bust I would be at least a 16, I usually go with a 12 and adjust for the bust where necessary. So, I don't know why this one was so huge, it is a mystery to me! Anyway, I recommend checking out Nancy Ziemans website and looking up how to choose a pattern. Give that a try and let me know how it goes.

I've made loads of toaster sweaters. They look and wear so well. You really need to purchase the proper toaster from sew house seven. I don't think the simplicity collab is the same.
