My grandma used to make pajamas for me for Christmas and my birthday. She used the scraps to make pajamas for my dolls. When I got to old for dolls she used the scraps to make quilted stuffed animals. It was fun to see fabric from every year's pajamas in little squares of a cat and dog. I still have them for decoration in my bedroom.

One of the tricks that I have for finding wool in the weight that I like, and also getting more bang for your buck, Is to buy my fabrics at drapery stores rather than apparel fabric stores. Drapery fabric stores usually come in 84 inches wide. So you're getting almost 2 and a 1/2 yards for everyone. Yard, you buy due to the width. And because so many people like to purchase silks. And satins and wolves for their heavy drapes. You find a lot more variety. Not only in patterns but also in solids and weights that are more traditional.

to give your children the wonderful opportunity of seeing, realizing and appreciating the care and mindfulness it takes to get an outfit made, is a Bachelor's degree with distinction all by itself. They'll understand the sophistication of clothing and getting dressed and wearing those clothes. Unlike were the items being made in a factory quick quick and quickest, then thrown into a trailer packed into a store and sold, it is just a "gimmie my XXX [brand] jeans/shoes/etc. now." Then they throw it down after they take them off. But this way teaches them quality and class! I like that.

All your patterns remind me of the ones mama had for me. She made most of my clothes & friends at school thought I must be rich because of my clothes. We dressed up for school in the 60’s, wore dresses only with slips & stockings. Mama was so talented. Even dot smoked the sleeves & across the top of a pink raw silk dress that I just adored. It was so feminine & was saved for Sunday & dressy occasions. RIP Mama ❤

The woman’s blue gingham nighty… my mom made a couple of these for me as blue and yellow gingham sun dresses when I was 3 years old, except shorter and with short matching bloomers underneath! This was in the early 60’s - we were still wearing this stuff into the 70’s. The pajamas with the trap door were always a source of humor. Interesting as well that these were the pajamas that my mom thought we should wear when we were sick because you could hit the ground running to the bathroom. Should be made loose for ease of wiping. Also back then getting out of bed when you were sick was a no no so this exposed less skin when toiletting. The red girls housecoat brought back memories. My mother had sewing skills but this one she bought special from the department store. It was like the red one here but it had big patch pockets, big buttons, a Peter Pan collar and two adorable black and white embroidered poodles and leash that was applied near and on the pocket. I spent a lot of time watching cartoons in this. It was A- line. Because it was made with a red regular wale corduroy, it was quite warm for our Maryland winters. I enjoy your channel and it brings back so many memories. I have always loved fashion, even as a young child. I love the garments you make, especially the brown woman’s jumper pants! Thank you!!!

100% agree about solid woollens, cotton velvet, flannelette and the rest. I would add: viyella and wool crepe. They used to be so easy to find when I was in college back in the Bronze Age. Now, almost impossible, and they're such useful, beautiful and comfortable fabrics.

My wish for newly produced vintage fabric is DOUBLE KNIT POLYESTER! My grandmother made so many of my clothes when I was young. Double knit poly wears like iron!! It doesn’t stain. Kids can play in the dirt and come in at the end of the day for baths and Mom washes the outfit and TADA, nice clean shorts and top! Ready for the next day. I have sewn since I was 8 years old (I’m 59!). One grandmother was a seamstress in England and the other grandmother was a Home Economics professor at Utah State University. All the women in the family sew and craft. Four of my five sons sew. My brother sews his own upholstery for his vintage cars. Great skill to have. Thank you for showing us that vintage sewing machines are just as good as new!! Happy Holidays!

I totally agree with you on cotton velvet and cotton sateen. I hate the feel of polyester satin. I would also love more selections of wool. I would add high quality, tightly woven light linen. I live in a hot desert and linen is a lifesaver but it's difficult to find lightweight linen that isn't loose woven or too slubby.

I love your Kenmore! I am a fan and have had some vintage machines over the years that have served me well. We love the nutcracker too - if you want a low investment while your kids are young, ask around or look at some community pages to see if any local schools are performing the nutcracker. Usually is inexpensive and much shorter than the higher end productions. I am so glad to have found your channel.

This was a fun video! I love the fabric choice. You mentioned wool is a fabric you are trying to find. I sew vintage and historical clothing and I buy wool from a company called Burnley and Trowbridge. They sell the most wonderful wool that is based on historical fabric. They have lighter weight wool that is wonderful for vintage and historical outfits, and it's not all plaid. 🙂

Thanks so much! I’m familiar with that company they have lovely linen too. but they don’t carry a lot of wool colors. I want pastel colors (pink, yellow, baby blue) some orange, turquoise a mod green. More mcm colors.

I’m 63 when I was a little girl little little girl we always got flannel pajamas at Christmas… Me and my four sisters the thing is they change the material because they needed the flame retardant material that was the big thing that came in to popularity, apparently to save lives… So I don’t know if you can truly get much true vintage material without it being fire, retardant free… That would be interesting

I agree with what you said about vintage materials. I have recently purchased a 70s crochet pattern and a 70s sewing pattern, the materials needed aren't being produced anymore. As much as I love modern fabrics I have noticed that vintage fabrics are sturdier. For example my thrifted jackets last way longer than my newly bought jackets.✨

_Scissor Hack_ - ask your sewing shop who in your city does scissor sharpening. If they're really dull, like mine were, it may take two visits. But a 10$ sharpening is so much better than buying a new pair when they go dull. In theory, the Grannies got their sewing sheers sharpened once a year. The matching PJ's are so very cute - what a lovely family tradition. The patterns for your daughters housecoat looks really cozy. The puffy paint for the feet bottoms is brilliant. As for fabric I wish was still made - wool without the polyester, in every weight. I agree with the cotton velvet & satin wish. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

@@SewRena Chances are good there's going to be somebody in the city who takes care of the chiefs and machinists. If they sharpen saw blades, they can sharpen pinking sheers. There's actually a few in Ottawa, so I double checked with my shop for which one they preferred. And if your guy/gal turns out to be eccentric as the guy in Ottawa, it might be worth a video. Who knows... And, yes to wool in all weights...

Great job. Once a year our Joann's has a call for professional scissor sharpening. Ask your store if they do. I have vintage scissors and no problem at all about getting them sharpened. Joann does not have nice wools but my local Bernini store has garment fabrics. I bought a grey wool thin gaberdine. She has had wool crepe in black. Lots of drape for skirts and dresses. I do wish we had wools in brighter feminine colors. If you want the name of the shop I mentioned, let me know. They do ship. Not gonna be cheap. Expect to pay about $15 per yard.

Have you tried cleaning your pinking shears with alcohol and oiling them? sometimes they can get 'gummy', especially in high humidity areas. But if they are dull, you can have them sharpened and usually it's not too expensive. Maybe fifteen-to-twenty dollars? You can send them off or there are professional sharpening services in most cities/towns. Hope this helps!
