In the early 2000s, there was a movement of "quilt from the back." I loved it. You would pick a busy backing. For example, I made a quilt in fall colors and picked a backing print with all kinds of leaves. Then, as a beginning quilter at that time, I picked a few leaves that repeated a lot, and added free motioned around them as you did your daisies. It made a real pretty design on the front and I didn't have to be exact as I copied the leaf shapes and curved a line from one to the next. Thanks for sharing this.

So cute and inspiring. Drawing can be intimidating for some people. A good resource for children’s quilts is. Coloring books!!!

Absolutely! And it can be traced onto pattern paper then pinned onto the quilt front or back and sewn right through & just torn away afterwards (I have a roll of thin doctor’s office exam table paper that’s the right weight and see-through-ness so would be perfect. Tissue paper would work too)!

Thank you for your suggestion of quilting on the back of the quilt. It was so “freeing” and I was able to quilt my daughters queen size quilt without problems. The pattern on the front was so busy I felt like I couldn’t see where I was going or if the pattern was too busy. But doing the back I could concentrate on the pattern and knew right where I was all the time. It came out beautiful 😊.

I've watched many videos about quilting, and this is the BEST idea I've seen yet! I struggle with FMQ because I'm not good at improvising, and stencils are helpful but tedious to use. This seems SO much easier, more fun, and a better result.

Such a lovely idea. Two suggestions that would work well. Cut out some large fabric flowers/shapes that are similar to the patterned fabric, applique onto plain back with the free motion to give a reversible quilt. Hand wrapping embroidery floss onto your bobbin and stitching will have an embroidered flower look(or straight line quilting) on the front of your quilt.

This is a brilliant experiment! Even though I only see the utility of really big quilts, I now see the value in making small quilts so I can do some practicing of my free motion quilting skills which I’d like to learn & hone, before I can do it on the more tricky piecing patterns I want to make. This would make a terrific table topper or dresser liner (if rectangular) or a bit larger would be great for a baby quilt or playmat. Non-quilting friends might enjoy a gift of a table topper or set of placemats. I am jazzed about this technique (as long as my sewing machine tension is good). Thanks Laura!!
