I just started this week, this is a cool moment for me. When I topstitch different colors, I use 2 colors of thread, one in bobbin and one for the top. Start with a leader scrap. When I sew fabric together, I take the corner stitch on the diagonal so when I turn, the corners are nice and crisp.

I ws taught to sew a line of stitches just inside the seam allowance on both sides where the opening is to be. A.k.a stay stitching. This controls stretching of the fabric, makes turning easier and neater. Stitching should be removed but I usually leave it.
