Offended by lyrics they deemed too sexual and violent, Tipper Gore and Susan Baker campaigned to put warning labels on albums in 1985. Years later, warning labels have ended up in unexpected places.

I’ll never respect parents who think those labels are good a good idea. They must be truly clueless about child psychology. That label just makes it more attractive. For me the self titled Rage Against The Machine album is a great example. Had the album just been the monk self immolation picture, I wouldn’t have picked that album up. But with the parental advisory label, I absolutely had to have it. To this day it’s strange for me to see that album cover on a streaming service without the label.

"the kids don't get to call the shots." Only Susan Baker does. Overall I agree with Zappa. If your child asks you a question be a good parent and answer that question in a honest and educational manner. Don't let it anger you. Either educate a child or block them from culture. By blocking them leaving them to come up with uneducated opinions about said culture.

That really bothered me too! "The kids dont get to call the shots" at college age they are NOT kids anymore. What a narcissistic self absorbed christain fundamentalist she is. Like you said oy SHE gets to decide whats vulgar or not! She and people like her just need to go away. Its no ones right to censor anything becUse of their religious beliefs. This is america after all and america is a secular nation that has freedom of religion including the right to have no religion at all which would include not imposing your mority on other and letting them live their lives the ways they want and you live yours! Seperation of church and state which means people like her dont have the right to impose religious morality laws.

the word trigger warning has been over used but the original meaning of it is good and i think it should be used. if you are going to discuss sexual abuse or suicide, witch are highly triggering for people dealing with that, you should warn the students so they are prepared and dont get a panic attack in a classroom full of people.

The last comment really contrasts the two uses of warnings. When you want to control what others are exposed to, it's acceptable. When you want something labeled in a way useful to you, so that you can choose what to engage with based on your knowledge of your own mental health, naw that's just absurd and you shouldn't get to "call the shots."

Life doesn't come with Trigger Warnings though. Everybody has encountered a traumatic event. Not that I don't sympathize, but you're in college to learn about tough subjects, and sometimes what you learn *will* enrage you, or make you feel things that you might not like. That's a part of life, and just because *you* can't handle the real world just yet doesn't mean that 800 of your classmates should have their education altered. And you're really not doing yourself any favors by sheltering yourself from everything. If you're doing that, you need to go see a therapist or take a medical leave, which universities (like mine) will let you do, but to try and alter the entire educational system of your school just because you're "triggered" is the epitome of being coddled. The real world *will not* coddle you.

TheKtwStudios Content warnings aren't about changing the content, they're about making sure you're prepared for the content you're about to talk about. People on both sides of the issue blow it way out of proportion (and I got caught up in thinking it's ridiculous too because my first experience with the topic was somebody screeching about being triggered), it's really just about being courteous to your viewers/listeners/readers/students. Sure, we don't _need_ content warnings, but we also don't need to say please and thank you. I also think "Trigger warning" is a bad term for it. 99% of people asking for warnings do not have ptsd and have no right to act like they do, it really makes a mockery of people who actually suffer from it. There's a pretty big difference between "Hearing about sexual assault is pretty disturbing" and "I'm having a flashback and think I'm about to die".

So if a parent wants to coddle their child from the dangers of the world, it’s perfectly reasonable, but if people who know they would _actually_ be harmed by these things want to have a warning beforehand, it’s “going too far.” Why don’t we just put away all pretenses and recognize that you think anyone younger than you is a mindless baby who cannot, nor should be able to, make decisions for themselves? Good lord, these are college students we’re talking about, not six year olds.

The prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for logic, responds to situations with good judgment and an awareness of long-term consequence is not fully developed until the age of 25. So yes, you do need someone older than you to make Rational, logical decisions based on good judgment with a full awareness of consequences until you are old enough to understand them. The amount of hypocrisy the explict warning advocates have when saying students shouldn't call the shots about trigger warnings on curriculum is crazy. Baker's final comment is very hypocritical, in my opinion. The thing about proposed trigger warnings is that it is meant as a WARNING, not a restriction. The advocate in the video even said that they can help prepare students who have experienced traumatic events for the sensitive material they will cover. Trigger warnings aren't made to restrict a certain demographic from speaking or learning about a touchy subject, but rather allow them to emotionally prepare themselves so they aren't abruptly shocked or triggered when they are brought up. Baker's actions towards the music industry was censorship, yet she complains students who are subjected DIRECTLY to potential disturbing content shouldn't "call the shots"? Her issues seem to be more about her own discomfort in educating her children honestly about difficult subjects than the difficult subjects themselves.

I disagree with trigger warnings because I think that if you have the option to skip out on part of a curriculum, you should not be allowed to pass the class. Like if you take Criminology, you are going to have to deal with some rape and murder cases. If you aren't prepped on that beforehand, you aren't fit for the job. At minimum, it needs to be something companies can look up before deciding to hire you.

Come Inside Exactly how many actual PTSD suffers do you think are running around on college campuses? Please explain why feminist law students have asked that rape not be discussed in their classes, when they are supposedly concerned about victims, and have asked that their professors not use the word "violate". Because they are hysterically ignorant authoritarians that's why. Trigger Warning should not be allowed at all. Any good psychologist or therapist (the word good automatically excludes feminist Psychologists who have a horrific and dangerous track record in the U.S) will tell you avoiding sensitive topics is the worst thing someone suffering from PTSD can do. It is detrimental. However, in the case of colleges, most asking for this are not suffering from PTSD or speaking on behalf of anyone who does have it. TW's have been used to censor, control and stifle conversation/debate. They allow a people/authoritarian trash to place their subjective opinions on content as if it's fact and often prohibit adults from making their own judgments about the content.

It's not a free pass to skip out on assignments, it's just a heads up so people can do whatever they need to so that they CAN do the assignment ffs. Like you are still allowed to talk about it. It's just that you give a heads up. Also I have both PTSD and several allergies. To avoid negative reactions from EITHER I always check labels when they are available! Like content warnings and trigger warnings really are just like allergen warnings. If you don't have any allergies, you can ignore them. But if you do? They can help prevent a health issue. Also people get triggered in different ways. Like some are ok with descriptions but SEEING the thing can send them over the edge. Or even if say the triggering content is necessary for an assignment or something, the person can make preparations for it. Take a friend to the lecture. Schedule a counselling appointment right afterwards. Bring a comfort item. Etc, etc. Not to mention they can brace themselves for it. But if it comes out of nowhere it has the potential to do a lot of harm to their mental wellbeing. Also one of the core symptoms of PTSD is dissociation. Hard to pay attention to or remember a lecture or whatever when you're dissociating. So they end up missing out on the important info ANYWAY because of their own brain trying to protect itself the only way it can at that point.

Trigger Warning/Content Warnings are used so people can get a heads up on what they're about to hear its not a free pass for someone to skip an assignment, it helps someone who is affected by something be able to work normally. Triggers are really and trigger warnings arent so ppl can skip things but just prepare for them. Lots of college students have PTSD bc lots of ppl go to college. People are just asking for a heads up so they know what to prepare for, not skip out on. If someone in ur class starts crying or hyperventilating bc they literally can't control their emotions bc of their trauma then its way more distracting and causes a bigger disruption than a quick tw at the beginning

Being unable to control your emotions is a psychiatric disorder called Emotional Dysregulation which can have a variety of causes based in psychiatric conditions. If you "literally can't control" your emotions, you should be checked for one of these psychiatric disorders and create a treatment plan for your mental illness--not ask others to change the entire basis of society to accomodate your disease.

it's idiotic that censoring artists was deemed fine by them, but using warnings so people who have suffered trauma don't have a breakdown because they were unprepared to witness involving similar themes as their trauma are out of the question for them. there's a massive difference between "blocking ideas" and simply warning someone about what's going to happen to avoid them reliving trauma. disgusting how the same adults that were advocating for parental advisories are the same people disagreeing with trigger warnings; something that will actually benefit a decently large chunk of society.

Music will always be controversial no matter what. It's time to accept it, and for also parents to realize that censoring this to your kids won't do any good in the long haul, they'll listen to this stuff when you're not around, or they'll throw it all out the rules of listening to "forbidden" music out the window when they're older

Her final statement of "I don't think the kids get to call the shots" is insensitive to the students of today. I believe that children should have a voice in how material is presented to them. Just because a student is under the age of 18 does not mean their opinions or feelings should be considered invalid to the discussion of curriculum. Another concern that was presented was that attaching a trigger warning in syllabi may deter students from exploring that subject, I do not agree with this concern and would argue to say that with a warning in place it would better prepare a student mentally and emotionally to face and learn from the subject matter without having to relive potentially traumatic experiences.

To be honest, it's all about how to present it to your child. Having those awkward conversations and telling your child why what is being presented is not okay, it's a better way of approaching it. And if you don't know how to approach, that where you as a parent figure it out...Stand by your convictions and know why you stand by them. It's silly that we rely on the government to explain these things to our children.

This is just like the internet and the “role models” we have today. All you have to do is pay attention to your kid and make sure you know what your kids looking at. It’s possible to be an attentive parent. People who make music or model aren’t there to raise your kids.

Every person who has had a childhood knows that telling kids to not look at or listen to certain things will only make them more attractive to them. People don't grow up and talk about how they obediently obeyed everything they were told they talk about the the stuff they were told not to do secretly.

It’s interesting how a proponent of censorship (supposedly to “protect” young people) is not in favor of college students requesting trigger warnings on course materials so as to prepare against reminders of past trauma. “I don’t think labeling is a bad thing, but for curriculum and things, I don’t know that the kids get to call the shots.” College students are not “kids,” but apparently anyone young enough to be Baker’s child or grandchild should not be allowed to determine what’s appropriate for them and advocate for themselves? At least in this case, censorship is about power and control, not trying to safeguard anyone as it comes down to who’s “calling the shots,” not the possible affect of media/materials.

I remember when most of this was happening (who remembers 2 Live Crew?) and I said then that the parents should be responsible for their children and what they hear/see. I still say that now, however, it has gotten increasingly hard to keep children from information that is simply too mature (to me) for their age. For example, if you drive through Florida on I-75 you will see large billboards for strip joints that read "ALL NUDE ALL THE TIME". Should you have to explain to your child what that means? Also, children where I live must use the internet to do their homework, even submit it online, a simple typo into a search engine can lead to inappropriate information being displayed.
