I love the way you empower other medical workers (the blood draw part). I think it's good for patients to know that doctors aren't the most knowledgable person in the room about absolutely everything. There is just way too much to know for one human. They're a part of a team that utilizes many different roles. In cath lab it's normal for doctors to turn to the nurses and techs and ask them what they think and if they have any ideas.

Your twin pregnancy story reminded of my mum's fourth pregnancy. After 3 kids, my parents decided to go for a for another one. Early during the pregnancy the doctors told my mum, that there are two babies, but one may absorb the other (not sure if this is accurate). Few weeks later, on the next visit in the hospital, the doctors confirmed, that there are not two - but three babies. My mum was in shock, my dad kept telling, that these doctors don't know what they are doing :D But the doctors seemed to be right, exactly 21 years ago my three tiny sisters were born - us, the "older" kids each had a baby to play with.

"You definitely want the phlebotomist or nurse to do your blood draw" - holy HELL yes. Sorry, doctors, but nope. Not in a million years. There have been times I've had to go to the hospital just to get a routine blood test because my GP surgery couldn't manage it, and the phlebotomists have to use a pediatric butterfly needle and a VERY slow draw with a syringe to get enough blood out of me without collapsing my veins. The last time I was admitted for an emergency cardio assessment, it took multiple tries in the inside of both elbows, both wrists, the back of both hands but by far the most painful attempt was in the top of my foot. That crap is tender AF. That was the doctor's attempt and I was bruised for 2 weeks. In the end, one last nurse came in, palpated the inside of my forearm with her thumb for a few seconds, aimed for a vein that was invisible and got a patent IV the first time. She was my saviour.

Oh god my mom’s experience was awful when she was in labor they stabbed her wrist and elbow like 15 times (she has small veins) before admitting defeat and calling an emt to do it. Took them like a second. She was pretty done by this point.

yes! I have perfect veins on my elbow and I had an IV started on me by a resident and she even said my veins were amazing but went for the back of my hand for some reason? anyway, it didn't work and she ended up taking it out and going for the normal IV location on the elbow. I had a giant bruise on my hand and wrist for a weeks after.

If I can possibly get out of getting a blood draw in the office and instead go to Quest or wherever to have a phlemobotmist who literally does a blood draw every 10 minutes for 40 hours a week do it, I absolutely do, they are WAY better than even primary care nurses

Even vaccines need someone who is trained in giving them, I remember the person who was supposed to give me mine was not present or late and they asked a random nurse (at least in my memory it was a random one) blood shot out of me instead of the vaccine getting in Can't remember the age but that definitely made me scared everytime I get a vaccine just because of how my blood acted one time

Your Betty Ford Center story reminds me of when I was in detox (against my will, thank God for Florida laws and my mother) and a bunch of nursing students came in an sat in on the group meetings and things like that. And they were studying afterwards and I ended up helping them student (because they were working on neuro-psych stuff, and I have a B.S. in psych) and it was really fun. I made up a bunch of questions for them and they were really surprised that this random junkie in the detox knew all this stuff xD They apparently did well on their tests too! I don't know why that memory sticks out for me, but it was a really welcome change to how boring and horrendous detox is.

You have unknowingly helped me through my first major surgery simply from your advice to speak to my doctor and let them know how fearful I was. I had a cyst removal surgery in September, suffer from anxiety also I'm terrified of needles and it required an epidural. The nurses and surgical team were fantastic, made me feel very safe and really helped me out with my anxiety. Thank you for everything ❤️

That is so awesome to hear. My Dad passed away 10 years ago and he was an organ donor. I assumed that because of all the cancer, none could really be used. One day I got a nice letter from the eye bank, thanking him/us for his corneas. I've never had first hand knowledge of anyone actually receiving corneas. So happy for you!!

It would be really cool if you could do a video on "common" pregnancy conditions that a lot of doctors just kind of brush off the concerns of expectant moms, and the things pregnant women can do to mitigate these conditions. For example, my sister is pregnant (currently 14 weeks) and is experiencing a severe PUPPP rash all over her body. Her doctor brushed it off super quickly saying its common and that the only thing she can do is suffer through it until baby is born, but I feel like there has to be SOMETHING people in this situation can do. She is so itchy she is breaking her skin with all of her scratching (causing bleeding/scabs), she's losing large amounts of sleep because the all-over itchiness wakes her up. I know you can't talk about her situation specifically, but I feel like women are brushed aside for a lot of pregnancy conditions, simply because they are "common". Just a thought!

PUPP usually appears in the last weeks. My Best friend had it as her daughters Blood Type didnt match well. There is nothing they can do. Other then clipping your nails short

Try to see if she can take an oatmeal or baking soda bath. That can ease the itchiness. If she goes with the oatmeal bath, just make sure she uses a blender to turn the oatmeal into powder. Then take a bath in that. Oatmeal and baking soda are both natural anti-inflammatory and treats itchiness. A cool towel might help too. There's not much you can do to get rid of it, but there are things you can do to try and calm it down. Get her to ask her doctor or pharmacist about using calamine lotion. That's what we always used for rashes, hives, stinger nettles, big bites, etc. It works wonders for calming any itching and stinging sensations. Don't want to just tell your friend to use it though because it is considered to be an over-the-counter topical medication, and I don't know if it's okay to use while pregnant. I don't see why it wouldn't be okay, but just to be safe, check with a medical professional.

I love that you were able to do a rotation at the Betty Ford Center. I feel like addiction is one of those things still misunderstood and looked down upon and one of the best ways to combat stigma and misinformation is to actually get to know multiple people on some level who have or are living with it. Organ, tissue, and cornea donation are a really important topic to educate yourself on and you should definitely have conversations with your loved ones about their wishes in regards to donation! And just as an FYI, lots of people who "are too sick to donate" can actually still help through tissue and cornea donation. Amazing fact: heart for valve donation can save the lives of 2 babies with heart defects. I used to coordinate these types of donation, which is why it's so important to me!

Yes! My grandad died years ago from liver cancer that had spread pretty much everywhere and he was still able to donate both of his corneas.

When our little girl died 4 years ago, years of medical issues had destroyed her major organs. Because organ donation is important to us, we asked to meet with donor services anyway. She was able to donate her corneas and the hospital requested a research autopsy due to the rareness of her conditions. We feel so blessed for both opportunities to help. We later learned that both corneas were successfully transplanted into two different individuals. This still makes my soul smile, knowing my little girl gifted the opportunity for sight to others.

There’s a decent amount of fraud in physician documentation. Medicare requires all “doctor” (MD, DO, PA, NP) visits to have a heart, lung, and abdomen assessment to be reimbursed. And there’s a lot of times when these things aren’t checked but they’re still getting paid 😒 my BSN assessment was taught by a CRNP who worked in a endocrinology clinic at one point and she found so many things that other providers should have found sooner because she did a full assessment on every patient.

I love this cause I work in a maternity center and we’re a huge pro breastfeeding force. Hearing any mom of twins able to breastfeed for a year is a triumph without the Med school! Fed is best but for anyone who wants to breastfeed, IT IS POSSIBLE. You need support and you have to want to do it, but it’s possible and I love every time I hear someone has succeeded!

Vet tech here - so the CCL is the cranial cruciate ligament in dogs, and it is similar to the ACL in humans. We just call it cranial due to the fact that dogs walk on all 4, so it is a positional description. That is all! 🙂🙃🙂🙃

re: physicians stealing pens, once it hit their hands, it was gone. I attached a. scrunchie to my scissors, they never stole it. I also have twins. Mine are boys, 5 weeks premature, weighed 5lbs 13, and 5lbs. 14, just stayed in hospital 1 day longer than me. I’m a double ovulater, grandma is a twin, cousin had twins year before mine. No ultrasound back then, told dr I was having 2, he just told me I was eating too much! Boy, did I show him. boys are now 44, where did those years go?

When I was in nursing school, I "lost" two cardiology stethoscopes, each with my name attached or engraved. Then I got another high quality scope and spray-painted the ear tubes with yellow enamel. It was extremely ugly, especially after the paint started chipping (I cleaned it frequently). I had no trouble keeping that one.

There are so many reasons poking veins can be difficult. I am super pale and all my veins are really close to the surface. I have had nurses and phlebotomists actually comment on how nice my veins are. Drawing blood has never been a problem. Getting an IV on the other hand, is much harder. The very reason my veins are so "nice" being close to the surface makes it extremely difficult to properly place an IV. I have had 3 IVs in my life and every time it took three tries and two nurses because the IV needle has to go so deep it just pokes right out the other side, leaving massive bruises in my arms or hands. Even warning the nurses hasn't helped, though I know they are trying to be so careful.

I work in an animal hospital. We take blood on everything from 2lb kittens to 200lb dogs that are trying to bite our faces off. I always tease my phlebotomists and nurses that they have it easy, I roll up my sleeve and show them where my best vein is!

My sister is one of the worst people to draw blood on that I know. Since she was a dialysis patient they could only use one arm and on top of that she had been getting blood draws on at least a monthly basis from the time she was probably about 7 (she's 31 now) and so when someone actually manages to draw blood on the first attempt I am very impressed with them.

I'm a starbucks barista and my store is directly across the street from the community college and, pre-covid, there was a whoooole entire gaggle of med students who would come in and get drinks and study in our lobby. They're all great people and pretty much the only part of pre-covid life that I miss at work.

I can't even look at the blood or I pass out at times (never know when I will or not..thanks weird brain) so I didn't even notice 😂 and I get blood draws all the time. I have to pretend literally anything else is happening or I end up passed out on the floor and the poor nurses huddling around me with a blood pressure monitor bringing me snacks and juice 🤦

This is why I didn't start theatre, even though I always knew on some level that acting was my passion, until after I came out - cause I knew no one would cast me in the male roles I wanted so desperately to play. Makes me mourn the entire childhood I could have spent onstage and lament that I had to start at an age where those younger than me could have had up to 10+ years' experience over me. But, I'm glad on some level that I recognized what kept me from my passion in the first place, and amended it pretty much as soon as I realized.

My oldest should have started medical school in Sept. but his life took a different path. He is currently working as and EMT and planned on Paramedic school in Jan but due to COVID it won't happen. Not big deal he is having the time of his life saving lives! For the record his biggest fear was delivering a baby which happened during field training (Within 2 months of being hired!).

A friend of mine in high school had her doctor ignor her when she said something wasn't right when she was pregnant. She's Mexican and was 17, almost 18 years old and he dismissed her when she said her blood pressure was way too high and requested to be tested. She ended up delivering a full term still born baby girl and went into cardiac arrest during delivery. I still don't think she has been able to fully forgive him for not listening to her.

I'm not sure about EDS but I have ankylosing spondylitis (a type of autoimmune arthritis) and I know I am not allowed to donate stem cells, blood or organs while I am alive so I don't know if you'd be able to either with EDS. You can sign up for it and see because they ask about your health before they say if you can donate or not (at least in Canada that's how it works).

My sister died from complications from a seizure. She hit her head and was without oxygen for too long. She died November 1, 2011. She was only 28 years old. She donated every body part that she could except her heart and corneas. So many people were helped by my sister and encouraged me to learn CPR and mark my license as a donor as a result. RIP Kathi.

Hairdressing student here: if you wanna go red again but with less maintenence you could do so it’s blended into your rootage, which makes it so the growth is less noticable, (the hairdresser could do a more balayage inspired technique with teasing at the root, or do lots of highlights to blend the root with the color but that’s your hairdresser’s choice) that way you could do a color twice a year and maybe just use a pigmented conditioner or hairtreatment other times. For reds you could use Maria Nila, oVertone or other brands. I only do my color like twice a year at most and you don’t have to do it more often

It was a delight to see pictures of simulation equipment somewhere other than that catalog that keeps coming to my house even though I never asked for it. I’ve been a doner for over 20 years. When I was about 20 I heard someone say “I don’t need my organs when I die” and the fact that you can save multiple people with one decision it’s amazing. At my next renewal I signed up, and told my family. Not sure if they agreed but understood my decision 🙂😀
