I think you are COMPLETELY right. The Sex Pistols were about a revolution, they were just amazing. They're job wasn't to be the best musicians in the world, they were there to get a message through. They simbolise (to me) the frustration towards society at that time. And they did it briliantly. Honestly the Sex Pistols were perfect. Just by the way that they were imperfect. They were perfect at what they did.

eg...you are spot on, I was 9 years old when I saw this on TOTP, it was an introduction to an alternative to the mainstream crap and I think that a lot of subsequent bands probably owe what they have to this genre of music without really knowing it. Shame thieving bastard Mclaren ruined it all.

I'm always talking Bollocks mate ,but Never Mind that... I was surprised on many occasions (as a yank in the UK) at how accepted the Pistols have become over time. I entertained romantic notions of their legendary origins, now lost to history. I was similarly shocked a few years back to hear the Ramones in a suburban hamburger chain in midwest USA.(Culver's) Cheers for now.

All cheekiness aside, you have a point, punk was trashed in the US media....most hoped the Sex Pistols would just go away. It carried throught he whole scene, I remember going to meet the Ramones at an autograph session.....so few fans showed it was almost an embarassment.

To my mind, "punk" means being yourself and doing what you want to do. If you play music, play what you want. Like what you like, talk to whomever you want. If you don't like the rules, throw them away. That's "punk." And if you don't like the term "punk," throw that away too.

Been a while.....think it was Trafford Centre, SW of Manchester. It occurred to me at the time that there is very little shock value left in rock music when you hear the Pistols in that setting.

The Pistols NEVER lip synched. What they did was played live in a studio. Pissing off those who wanted to film them mimiming. This is another classic example. However the automotons of the network channels had to do their best to fit them to their doctored recording. In this case the BBC brought the Pistols in early morning to prevent them bumping into any bands who were to appear later on TOTP. This particular recording receiving the famous headline:- Sex Pistols in NO shock, SHOCK !!!

Iggy and the stooges and the Ramones did punk first, but the Pistols started the cultural explosion. Great stuff. I'd hate it, however, if the rest of the world wasn't aware of The Buzzocks, The Fall, The Undertones, The Specials, Joy Division.. 77-81 was an amazing period in UK music.

The Pistols and the Clash were derivative, in that they built their sound on artists that had gone before, the Stones and the Kinks, to name but too, who in their turn had built their sounds on earlier artists. There's nothing wrong with that, so long as the artist then moves on. I'm so sure the Pistols were around long enough to develop that much.

I thought they did the song cause of censoring on the BBC. they wernt allowed to swear in songs so they did this and the Beeb couldnt stop them cause it was vacant even though they pronounced Vay Cunt instead of Vay Cant. I'm probably wrong but seems like a good reason to me, write a hit song and upset one of the greatest media organisations in the world. hell i wish i'd done it

I can't make up my mind whether Rotten can sing or not. Sometimes it sounds awful and other times it actually sounds good. Singing well isn't really the point of punk though. It would be fun to hear him sing a Robbie Williams song (odd dream I had... but it would be fun)
