Yeah, when you scan a brain and check for electrical impulses, on average only 10% of the neurons are firing at any given moment, but they’re still all doing their JOBS. IE firing WHEN they get the combination of inputs that they’ve been trained to report, but NOT when they DON’T.

Yeah basically you're only using around 10% at a time. You don't always use the same 10%, it's just that not all 100% is necessery every second of everyday. Sometimes you need the part of the brain for physical activity, sometimes the part for logical thinking, and sometimes the part for i dunno, processing emotion. It's just like your phone. You don't always use 100% of your phone, right now you're only using youtube, and maybe a few other things are running in the background, but some are turned off because they're not necessary right now.

2:00 Paper money is valuable because it's TECHNICALLY a receipt for valuable metals. The British "pound" originally meant the government owed you one pound of silver.
@multilk63997 ай бұрын
yep, that's the original reason for the value of most currency afaik
@dynamicworlds17 ай бұрын
Actually no. Even when money _was_ coins of precious metals it's value came from the government accepting it as payment for the taxes it collects under threat of violence. THAT is why there is universal demand for it and it always circulates above the value of any prescious metals which may or may not "back" it and why even tally sticks (when they were accepted by the government) could circulate as money. It's a common misconception because we get taught mythology in econ classes. If you want to learn more I highly recommend "Debt: the First 5000 Years" (which you can find the audiobook of free on KZbin if you prefer listening to reading)

And in modern times the currency gets it's value pretty much entirely from the stability and economic strength of its origin country.
@rightwingsafetysquad987216 күн бұрын
Money has always gotten its value from the military and police power of the issuing government and economic strength of the nations that use it. That isn't new for modern times. Gold and silver didn't have inherent value until governments told people they could use them to pay their taxes instead of foodstuffs. Imagine someone tried to buy a cow from you with a slightly shiny rock, you'd laugh at them. Now imagine the Pharaoh says you have to transport either 5 cows or 10 ounces of shiny rock to his capital every year. It's a lot easier to transport shiny rock, so you're a lot more likely to accept it as payment. Now Pharaoh stamps shiny rock into coins and says they're worth more shiny rock than what they're actually made of. He can use this to pay his armies and bureaucrats. Pharaoh raises taxes such that it would be nearly impossible to pay in physical foodstuffs. Now you have to use his coins. Banks pop up to help avoid theft. Banks can then issue paper notes to avoid further reduced the burden of carrying coins. Banks discover they can issue more paper notes than they actually have coins as long as not everyone tries to redeem at the same time. So now shiny rock has abstracted real value, coins have diluted shiny rock, and paper has diluted coins. Governments discover that they can cut out the middle man at the bank and issue their own paper money. Government discovers they don't actually need to make coins to issue paper money against. Sometimes they use the money wisely and everyone works harder to get the money and everyone gets wealthier. Other times they use it foolishly and it greatly devalues the paper. Somewhere along the way banks discover that while they can't actually make coins or print paper money anymore, they can still loan out other people's money, which is kinda the same thing on short timeframes.

H: I'm just laughing at something I find funny. A: What do you mean "funny"? H: Oh, you wouldn't understand. It's a human thing. A: Try me. H: Okay, I'll give you an example of something funny: H: A man walks into a bar. "Ouch!" A: What part of those words causes you to exhale air in such a strange way? H: Maybe you just need more examples. Here, I'll give you a book of jokes. A: I doubt this will work, but I suppose I'll give it a shot. **a few hours later** A: I think I may have finally figured out this whole "funny" thing. H: Really? A: Most of these "jokes" as you call them seem to involve the multiple meanings of words in your language. In your example from earlier, this was the word "bar" meaning both a place to purchase drinks and a long, thin tube of metal. My theory is that this is supposed to be a display of intelligence, with the person telling the joke signifying their intelligence through the ability to use and understand the human language to the recipient, and the recipient performing this "laughing" action if they understand the joke, signifying _their_ intelligence to the person telling the joke. H: That's... a great description actually! I couldn't have said it better myself. A: Really? Finally, you humans are actually starting to make sense. By the way, what was the image you were laughing at earlier? H **shows them the image** A: And how exactly does the phrase "this unpleasant gradient shows up on your front door" written above a low quality image of a multicoloured gradient seeming to stand on a porch signify intelligence? H: Uh... A: ... H: ... A: Remind me to never say " you humans are starting to make sense" again. H: I'll be sure to.

A: Well the crew species, like the plasmamen and mothpeople are real. H: That's not much consolation... A: Would it be much consolation that they are actually much nicer than what they seem? H: Yes.

There's something awesome about getting to listen to this again. The videos that I feel kinda started the whole "Humans are space orcs" subreddit (or at least made it popular), and it's HFY cousin.

A: human? I hear a voice i do not recognize. What did i tell you about bringing other humans? H: what? No, i didn't- A: wait, why is the voice coming from that small box? H: oh, that's my phone. There's not actually a human in there, it's just playing his voice. A: ah, i see. Is this another device for memories? H: no, this one is for entertainment. A: i thought you already had entertainment! Is it not sufficient enough? H: well, all of those other things require some effort, and sometimes i just don't feel like doing much. A: interesting... i suppose i could try it next time i am feeling exhausted. *the next day* A: HUMAN WHO IS THIS P.M. SEYMOUR PERSON AND HOW DID HE GET RECORDINGS OF US? *AND HOW ARE THE VIDEOS DATED BEFORE WE MET?????*

A:Human what are “monsters”? H: oh, monsters are made-up creatures that we use for storytelling. Usually as an antagonist for the main character. A: ah, that’s interesting. Are they unnerving stories? H: sometimes. Monsters are meant to be scary, but You have the horror genre, which is a usually more gruesome telling of a story. Definitely not for kids A:…that would imply there are stories, which include, I repeat, a scary monster, in them. For children. H: yeah we usually read them to them at bedtime A: AT BEDTIME?!?! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!?! H:I DON’T KNOW!!

Trying to decide whether the punchline of the crab joke is that crabs really are secretly aliens that have been hiding in plain sight for millions of years, or that carcinisation has happened on other planets as well.

A: human I must ask something H: sure what’s up? A: it’s about WW2 H: …. Be very careful about what you ask A: oh do not worry human it’s about the tanks and how ingenious they are for your species at the time. H: oh yea giant metal boxes for assaulting positions and defending troops A: yes very effective -and ingenious thankfully back then the tanks couldn’t float. H: … the British would say otherwise A: WHAT? *some explaining later A: SO THESE BRITISH MAKE TANKS FLOAT IN ORDER TO ATTACK THE GERMANS ON THIS D-DAY??? H: yes A: THAT MUST HAVE BEEN TERRIFYING!!

A: *afraid* don't tell me.... H: it'll have glow in the dark rings to help kids afraid of the dark. A: oh..... and i take it that you'll try and make it "cat like"? H: big time! A: what else do you plan? H: one that smells like autumn... but that's the hard part. A: we just need it to smell like a specific season on earth? H: yes? A: i think i have a way to help with that.

There has been some parts of Geography class that i dont know Im in first year, and i know so far a bit about the atmosphere as well as things that comes with it As i try to relearn some parts if it, i missed out on something known as El Nino, a Phenomena, and bc of the gravity of that phenomenon, i decided to make my own Nerva with a human convo A: Human, i found something called El Nino while rummaging through your old things, what is that H: oh, my school books, yea, that is a Phenomenon, happenes every so 10 years A: what does it do H: its the increase in heat of the surface of the area in the middle of the Passific Ocean, it ultimately causes the ocean current to slightly change A: doesnt that cause.. global issues.. H: it does, tho after it ends, the ocean stabilizes itself back to the original current A: doesnt that also cause some issues H: it does, tho i forgot parts of it A: considering the last human i talked to also mentions messed up shit, im guessing you also have somethign to share H: i do actually, its quite ironic that i remember only the El Nino consequences, the Phenomena causes things like intense heat waves, long autumns, as well a flood and shortage of fish in some places A: and you humans have experienced it... How many times? H: i only know it happened five times in southeast Asia A: at least it causes weather like changes H: oh it effect our economy as well, and it can also cause starvation A: least its small right? H: there is the black plague A: what? H: nothing A: ... H: ... A: Ho- H: more than 75 million total A: Not.... Bad.... H: I guess.... A: ... H: the estimated maximum is 200 million A: i need to leave H: dont worry, it spread through fleas... Which im sure isnt in your home planet A: but it co- H: it could already have infected you... Maybe idk that was more than 500 years ago A: WHY H: couldve been worse A: WE SHOULD'VE BUILT AN ANTI VIRUS BARRIER H: parasites could be possible A: SHUT UP

Never let aliens interact with us Aussies, our natural instinct is to not only mock people but gaslight tourists. Soooooo if an alien had questions about say… a drop bear… there would be some terrified aliens.

H:that depends on if you talking about music or not. A:so what is the rock music sabaton? H:they do music usually based on history like what in listening to im listening to nuclear attack A:uh ok what is a nuclear attack? H:oh boy do i have a lot to go over! **TWO HOURS LATER** A:SO AMERICA CAUSED HUMAN SUFFERING BECAUSE JAPAN TOUCHED THEIR BOATS?! A:yep america also launched an attack officially called Overlord against Germany to reoccupy controled france overlord is unofficially called D-Day by most of the public and they just threw soldiers into machine gun fire for the sake of preoccupying france! A:what the hell was that war about?!? Your species is an odd bunch but why must they drop those things on japan? H:to end the war and to stop more suffering! Ironically enough. A:WAIT WHAT?
