Y is only sometimes a vowel because of A & An. If you are referring to a yellow room, you say "A Yellow Room," not "An Yellow Room." If you are referring to an indigo room, you say "An Indigo Room," not "A Indigo Room."

​@@mrmissingno10it's sometimes because when y starts off a word it usually has that "ia" or in Spanish the double l sound to it. Like "yield", and "yes". In which case it is not a vowel. But when it comes later in a word, usually at the end, it has that nice i sound to it, like "merry", and "any". The Holes book/movie really finally made me realize it, because once you've naturally learned English as a child, you don't really think about how to say "Mary Lou". You don't just say "Marye Lou" because you know the y sounds like an I there.

Y can still be a consonant when it's not in the beginning of words. An English example would be "beyond," although it seems to be pretty rare. But it does exist in other languages, like in Japanese. (e.g. Tokyo (Yes the y in Tokyo is a consonant. If you say it as a vowel you're saying it wrong.)) (Also words that aren't nouns exist, you can just say those words are examples)

in words like "You" and "Yellow," Y counts as a consonant. It exists to break the vowel sounds up into syllables. In words like "Why" and "Slyly" it counts as a vowel, because it forms the sound that's broken up into syllables by consonants.

Omg twins!! A tip that helps for me: when ur in a funk, look up either hyperpop, bimbocore, or a god complex playlist. Absolutely WILD to me that the person with the balloons just assumed that the "a" in happy was the one letter not capitalized in the entire set-up, and also didn't just put the "extra" A in the proper place and use the "wrong" not-capitalized "a" as a D anyway Like, I get that it's the D they think is missing, but it's like- "oh, okay, so here's H, and then a, and then- P? Not p? Take "read read read" the different tenses of "to read" written in IPA that is : "/ɹiːd/ /rɛd/ /rɛd/" edit: Since IPA is a notation of sound, the notation for words change with dialect /r/ and /ɹ/ are both "r" sounds but different. So read might be written /riːd/ instead.

Fun fact: in english, the letter Y is actually what's referred to as a semi-vowel, or a glide. In simple terms, It sounds like a vowel but can function as a consonant. In this case, Y can also be used as a vowel. Additionally, the letter W is also a glide, though it can't be used as a vowel like Y can

This was 4 months ago, and there was also a separate smaller video explaining the "and sometimes Y" thing, but I actually know enough to talk about this! It is dumb to say "and sometimes Y" because Y is a vowel roughly 97% of the time in the English language, if I remember correctly. This is largely to do with the fact that Y is used in nearly every adverb, and in effectively all of those cases it is a vowel. For clarification, adverbs are basically adjectives that describe verbs, or really just anything other than nouns. Some examples are quickly, jokingly, incidentally, and badly. Of course, English can't be that simple and there are still plenty of adverbs without the letter Y, such as here, there, now, then, and so. Y is usually a consonant in words that start with Y, such as yellow, yam, yes, you, and yell. It can also be a consonant in words such as lawyer and beyond. You could argue that Y isn't really a consonant in these cases because it is kind of just being used as a single-symbol diphthong (vowel sliding thingamabob) between the vowel sounds of "ee" and "uh", but at that point you have to make really clear what you even consider a consonant to be. When you really think about it, why do we consider a W sound to be a consonant? Why do we see an H sound as a consonant?! The main reason is that diphthongs, as well as other phonetic oddities, in certain contexts, act in a way that is more like independent consonants than sounds between vowels. TLDR; Y is a vowel the vast, vast majority of the time, and the rest of the time it isn't really a "traditional" consonant, but more is a consonant because we just made up what consonants are.

The simplest way of putting it, Y is a vowel anytime it takes the place were a vowel would typically be (usually taking the place of an I ) I.e. Every, any, symphony, etc. Y is a consonant anytime it takes the place of where a consonant would typically be. I.e. Yellow, yesterday, young, etc. Basically if you pronounce it as a "yuh" sound, it's probably not a vowel.

I hate how "Y is a vowel only sometimes" was never properly explained, you had to figure that shit out yourself But the reason is, sometimes Y makes a vowel sound in english, so behaves as a vowel, but other times it has its own consonant sound Like it behaves as a consonant in the words Yo-yo, Yell, Yam, etc But in words like Fly, Wyoming, and Lovely, all those Ys are acting as vowels. Maybe children wouldn't have understood that, but I believe it's equally confusing to just say "Y is sometimes a vowel" with no further explanation. It's like if you said to a child learning math for the first time "oh and sometimes we'll use this in calculating the diameter of a circle" and not saying anything else. Because this comment section demonstrates a large portion of adults know this thing but don't actually understand what people were attempting to relay to them. That's a problem.
