Nope. The fact that only completing mission 7 of every world matters combined with the only path to those missions being the missions previous makes it the most linear mario game to exist INCLUDING every single 2D game, the galaxies, and everything between. Unlike the galaxies, and the 3D whatevers, and any other 2D game you care to name it doesn't use this linearity to build compelling set-pieces often. Further still tropical is not a suitable theme for an entire game as it simply isn't diverse enough not to get stale. It works as a level theme though. Also the physics were often janky in manners unfun, unfair, or both at the same time, and many of the missions being lauded as the part of the game you don't want ignored are both bad and UN-SKIPPABLE. Worst main series game.

+hockeater You're saying that under the assumption that you have to complete every world before moving onto the next, which you do not. If one wanted to, you could do all of Bianco Hills, then do the first two shines of Ricco Harbor and move on to Gelato Beach. Sure, it's much more linear than the Galaxy games and 64, but calling it the "worst", while it could be true, I feel is way too harsh. Besides, for sticking to a "tropical" aesthetic and it not being "diverse", they sure have significantly different level designs for each world. The most similar ones would likely be Bianco Hills and Pianta Village, but even then, that's pushing it. It's not a matter of "oh, this one's tropical and this one is also tropical", but looking deeper than that. Honestly though, it's your opinion, and I know I'm certainly not going to change it, but if you're going to respond with "nope" right off the bat, I'm happy to give a little insight as to why I agree with Johnny's thoughts.

But see here's the important bit. Mandatory missions per game. Stuff you HAVE to do to beat the game with no recourse. In the 2D games warp zones shortcuts and similar such nonsense means that very few levels are actually required. 64 or galaxy basically have few to no required stars in the sense that literally all stars are equal in the face of your final requirement with the only special ones only being a gate to new worlds opening. And so on. Do you know what the point of being a non-linear mario is? Having the freedom of movement to only do stuff you want to do. Sunshine lacks this more completely than literally any other game in the main series and most spinoffs. If you want to use the argument that painting everything a slightly different shade and moving some platform platform placement constitutes a new level, I wonder how satisfied you'd have been in an endless barrage of floating blocks in space with differently colored easter egg backgrounds. Otherwise known as yahtzee's favorite levels in the game. And no it is not "harsh" to call a game worst in series when the common play recommendation of pretty much everyone is to not touch over half the content, which is near universally agreed upon, and there are still systemic issues in the part I'm told is supposed to be fun. The rest of the series is universally superior to that track record, and I'll not have it impugned by claims that literally any of them are implied to not be superior to this.

Fludd wasn't utilized to the most potential sure, but all the aesthetics of the machine make traveling and platforming a blast. Certainly more prompt than it was in 64 and Galaxy didn't have much of an overworld. Really if you just allowed the machine to hold all four nozzles that'd fix one of the only issues I have (other being blue coins, as much as I adore Sunshine I'm not blind to that mess) Thanks Elliot diverting the discussion away from the GOP, Donald Pianta was funny but I could tell things were fixing to get bad if it went much longer.

The fan game Super Mario 63 actually has a mission in Lethal Lava Land that has your water evaporating while inside a volcano. It's cruel, but efficient for level design, as it urges you to use Mario's (or Luigi's) acrobatics to their full potential to reach the Shine Sprite. It's pretty exciting.

On a serious standpoint. Sunshine is still my favorite Mario game to date though Odessy is coming pretty close to over taking that. I love how fludd controls and the increased sense of freedom. I love the look of this game more than any other Mario game and many other games to date. And last, I love the fact that we find out that Peach is fucking Bowser.

With that the Sunshine playthrough comes to a close. My opinion of Super Mario Sunshine is roughly on par with Johnny's opinion in that if you're only going for the mandatory shine sprites to get to Bowser then the game is really great, but if you're going for 100% then the game becomes a tedious slog and it becomes REALLY apparent that they were padding out shine sprite amount to fulfill that 120 shine sprite quota. Also I love this game's art style and aesthetic and I still think it looks great today by Gamecube standards. Maybe one day Nintendo will make a sequel for this game or at least give it a similar treatment like they did with Wind Waker HD where they add and tweak stuff that really helps cut down on the more bullshit aspects of the game or at least make it tolerable.

Yeah. Sunshine is good game, but it's filled with repetitive missions, the level designs can be patting & getting all 120 Shine Sprites in this game is really useless.

I still say it's the weakest 3D Mario game. Doesn't make the game bad. But I don't think it's as great as other 3D Mario titles. I'll take 64 over this anyday.
