SGB Review - Sonic Colors

Christmas time is here, so why not review a game that has nothing to do with the holidays? Hey, at least there are tons of pretty colors...that's like Christmas, right?
Anyway, it's time to look into Sonic Colors for the Nintendo Wii. Is it something worthy of being under your Christmas tree, or is it just a lump of coal? Watch and find out! Happy Holidays!

Looking at the comment section, I can certainly say that the Sonic fandom cannot agree on what makes a Sonic game good or even great. Some want the Adventure style gameplay, some want the boost formula from Sonic Unleashed - Sonic Generations, some want the classic 2D formula from the Genesis/MegaDrive games. Heck there are some that play Sonic games just for the story. Because of this, the fanbase is divided into these factions and make it impossible to satisfy the majority of them. And the thing is, when Sonic Team actually makes a good game that caters to a particular style, the other fans have to tell their opinion about it. Some fans are more open-minded and objective in their critique (like SomecallmeJohnny or Clement, but even they have a Classic bias) while some will just blindly hate it for the most stupid reasons (i.e TOO MUCH 2D, Sonic's eyes are GREEN, it's not like Sonic Adventure so it sucks, the story is too cheesy so it sucks). Not all Sonic fans are like this mind you, there are some, albeit few, that actually enjoy a good crafted Sonic game regardless of the gameplay style. But here comes the question. If the fans don't know what they want, how could Sonic Team know?

RodniDemental Now here's the kicker. My first (and favorite) Sonic game is Sonic Generations. Before that, I didn't had any experience with the franchise (outside of Sonic X which was meh) and after completing the game and seeing the credits roll with all blue blur's past games it got me hooked to try the old ones too. So I started from the old Megadrive/Genesis games with the help of emulation (being from Eastern Europe, it's nigh impossible to find a Megadrive/Genesis console, let alone games for it), to the Advance Series (people forget about these awesome games) to the Adventure Series and all the way back to Generations (except Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 2006 and the storybook series for obvious reasons and the Wii U games). And guess what, for the most part I had a blast. Gameplay inconsistency aside, the combination between speed, platforming and exploration along with diverse characters, unique stages and memorable soundtrack made me fall in love with this franchise. It has it's flaws (like any other long running game franchise) but I'm willing to take the good with the bad as long as I'm able to have fun with a game. But not everyone is like that, especially in the Sonic fanbase. You have people who blindly love a Sonic game without acknowledging it's flaws ( i.e. Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic 2) but nitpick on the tinniest of details when it comes to a game out of their comfort zone (i.e. Sonic Colors or even Sonic Generations) to the point that it becomes hypocritical, and rarely do you get to see someone criticizing a Sonic game in an objective and in-depth manner, with ExoParadigmGamer (recommend watching his channel, especially his Sonic ROR reviews), SomecallmeJohnny and other reviewers along with a small number of Sonic fans being the exception. Maybe it's because I don't have any nostalgia for the series, that I'm able to look at this franchise in a more open-minded and objective way. Bottom line, I agree with what you said at the end and I also think that Sonic Team should stick with a particular style and refine it with each game (like they did with Sonic Unleashed - Sonic Generations), instead of trying to satisfy an already whiny, indecisive and unsatisfied fanbase. Other elements like the story, music and aesthetics should be taken into account as well to fit the tone of the game, just don't make it super edgy like Shadow the Hedgehog or super kiddy like Sonic Colors (even though I love this game) but more in line with Sonic Adventure 2 (I love this game's story, plotholes and all) or Sonic Unleashed. Phew... WOW O_O. This is one novel of a KZbin comment.

Marius Urucu I appreciate your thoughtful response. Funny you mention ExoParadigmGamer, I actually found SomecallmeJohnny's channel because EPG kept mentioning him. I quite enjoy his thorough approach to reviews, gives a much more fair and MUCH more indepth perspective than say the 2-3 minute crap from IGN these adys where the reviewer has obviously barely even beaten the game in some cases. But I digress. That's cool you got on board after Generations. I have only good things to say about that game really, it truly was a game for the fans based on many of the memorable and favourite parts from older games. And the fact that it's actually a good game means newer players will have fun with it too. I actually don't mind the story of Sonic Colours, but I prefer more along the lines of Sonic Boom (I'm only comparing the 'tone' or 'mood' of Colours to Boom), I'm just saying Colours had a sort of silly approach to the story, came across as a bit kiddy sometimes but I like the fact that Sonic doesn't take things seriously. The relationship between Eggman and Sonic is spot on. It's like an old rivalry where they're just constantly taking the piss and being sarcastic to one another which I prefer to the overly serious approach of even the Adventure titles. I don't mind if they try and make it a bit more 'epic' sometimes perhaps towards the end, but Sonic's never been serious. Or maybe I'm just imposing a preconception I have. lol I agree the Advance and Rush series (including Colours DS) do seem to be underrated and not talked about very often. But then again I think they do have quite a strong following, because there's not too many things to complain about unless it's one of the extra vocal fans that was nitpicking about the momentum not being like the mega drive games or the boost button breaking the spindash or whatever. xD In any case, you probably made a wise choice not to play Shadow/06/Secret Rings before playing the classics because it may have obscured your impression of the series. BUT, I must say, if you do enjoy the series, they can be worth checking out, if not just for historical purposes. I mean those games still have a bit of a cult following. Some people do like them. All of those 'dark age' games seem to have something in common: They tend to look good, to the point where if you watched a player that knew what they were doing, the games might actually look quite fun. They all seem like they have potential. but ultimately were rushed and unfinished because Sega have a really bad track record of forcing developers to meet deadlines at the cost of quality. This has been happening as far back as Sonic 3 where they couldn't meet the deadline so they had to turn it into two games. And it happens almost every 5 years to meet 'anniversary' dates, which was the cases with Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Genesis and Sonic 06. I'm surprised they seemingly haven't learnt from this as Sonic Boom was clearly not finished. It seems like they should rethink their business models instead of trying to always get in before christmas or hit an anniversary date. It doesn't work in the long run if the game is a failure, I just wish they spent a bit more time in development with Boom, 06, Secret Rings etc. Even games like Adventure 2 could have benefited from a bit more play testing and polish but they got lucky with that one. Haha

This comment section is the main reason why I hate talking about Sonic. Nobody can make up their mind on what makes a good Sonic game, and people are antagonized for liking certain games or liking certain games over others. Granted, some people do deserve to be called out because of their rancid behavior (mainly this DarkSonic180 guy I see people talking about, and after reading what he has to say, it's not hard to see why he's being antagonized), but eventually it just gets tiresome. I like Colors over the Adventure games as well, but I still like the Adventure games for what they do right. While both Adventure 1 and Adventure 2 do have their negative traits, if people still end up enjoying the games (like yours truly here), don't see them as idiotic or naive. Oh, and please stop acting like preferring Colors over the Adventure games is some huge confession that needs to be made and that you're going against the law or some bullshit. It's getting old. Ok, gonna throw my two cents. I prefer a light hearted Sonic over the melodramatic tone Sonic Adventure 2. As someone who has recently played the Adventure games, I kind of agree with Johnny on a lot of what he says. Lot's of people need to understand that SIMPLE does not mean dull and boring. I prefer a simple story with a lot of witty banter that'll make me chuckle. That's not to say that a simple story can't have high stakes. Just look at SA1, it had its light hearted story, a simple plot and a big climax. Have the modern writers rework the dialogue to be more witty when it needs humor and there you go. As for gameplay, I don't care any more. I just want the gameplay to be consistently good

***** Simple does not mean dull and boring, it just means simple. SA 1's is rather simple. Eggman unleashes Chaos, Sonic and friends try to stop him. Simple, yet we still get to find out what happened to Knuckle's people, we have character development for Tails. Throw in a better balance of humor and serious moments and bam, there you go. As for wether a bad story would keep me from replaying a game. Really that depends on the game itself. Many games with bad stories can be saved by excellent gameplay. Just look at Mario and DK: Country. Very simple almost non-existant plots but they are some of the most fun games out there

***** Well that's your tastes. To me, it really depends on the game. Same was as how to you a bad story can bog down a game, to me bad gameplay can make a game suck. It's a GAME, so I want to PLAY and have fun. That's the beauty of video games, they can have both. But some games just don't call for it. I don't need to have some epic story to drive me to stop Bowser as Mario, I just need a good challenge and fun gameplay that'll make me smile. But for a game like, say, and RPG or Metal Gear, then yeah, if the story sucks, then it's not worth playing

@@electromagneticpsychopath4973 Not so much people simply disliking Colors, but rather the fact that they then turn around and act like Unleashed was this flawless gift from God cause their all butthurt by IGN's review, and they will then destroy you if you say ANYTHING bad about Unleashed. The hate for Colors has gotten so toxic that people are now saying "Sonic 2006" is somehow a better game cause it was edgy. That is how low the standards within this fandom are. The haters of Colors always make it seem like having a light hearted tone is public offense #1, that any 2D is an eye sore, and that if the story is an edgy cluster fuck, just cause its early 2000's style edgy cringe, its somehow automatically good, and they make it seem as if these claims are facts. 3D Sonic fanboys, particularly the Unleashed fanboys have become so toxic with their hate for Colors, that their actually making the Classic Sonic fanboys look tolerable. At one point Classic Sonic fanboys were the most toxic element of this fanbase, but I guess now its the SA2/Unleashed fanboys turn to take that title. Maybe Sonic Team doesn't have a clue cause 1) They need new fresh blood in the development staff, and 2) The fandom in general has become so unfocused, they don't know what they really want, they refuse to look at things from an objective perspective, that Sonic Team eventually just said "Fuck it!", threw EVERYTHING into a blender, and out came "Sonic Forces" and look how well that turned out. (sigh) I'm not against people prefering one game over another. I'm just so tired of the extreme double standards this fandom and other fandoms like it thrive on.

What I'm not fine with are the double standards. For the record, I'm not defending IGN's review of Unleashed as I agree that it was a godawful review as the person playing it sucked ass at it. Meanwhile I played Unleashed properly and still can't realistically recommend it to anyone. At least not the 360/PS3 versions. The Wii/PS2 versions actually fixes nearly all the problems I had with the HD versions. But my point is that if people wanna like a certain Sonic game, that's 100% fine, but they need to at the very least acknowledge that particular games shortcomings in a constructive way. For example, while I personally love Colors, I'm not gonna pretend its flawless. I agree the game is a bit on the easy side, some levels were somewhat short, and getting all the red rings to get Super Sonic is pretty tedious as there isn't a radar telling you where one might be. If I can at least acknowledge Color's flaws in a constructive way, then SA2 and Unleashed fanboys should do the same. They don't have to agree with them, but a simple acknowledgement goes a long way. This fandom needs to stop acting like their favorite game is the definitive best game in the series are flawless and that its a fact. I love "Sonic Colors", but it ain't perfect, and if it were to get a remaster for the PS4, XBOX One, Switch, and PC, it could certainly do with some touching up. Maybe add some extra levels to each world, increase the framerate from 30 to 60, give a radar for the red rings, and other touch ups. If the Sonic fanbase had this particular mindset when discussing their favorite games in the series, maybe this fanbase wouldn't have the scathing reputation it has.

You make good points, but I personally don't view this very game highly at all. Stiff controls, terrible dialog (IMO), bare bones story, and you can just tell that this game was meant to cater to those who don't like Sonic games (Where are the other characters? Why is the tone so childish? Where are the plot elements from previous games? Oh right, the critics didn't like those things). I would give it a 5/10 at most. The daytime Unleashed levels and all of Generations did everything this game did, but much better. The DS version on the other hand, I enjoyed a lot. It actually played like a legitimate Sonic game, and the level design was superior.

I feel Colors was overly childish. It seemed like they went out of their way to steer clear of any sort of tension whatsoever. This is most notable right before the final boss "Let me stamp your hand..." Although Mario games can be seen as childish they don't go out of their way to be. Galaxy is a prime example. It is child friendly but the story is still taken rather seriously. Its fine if others like the Colors, but it just wasn't for me. I thought Generations was great, though. If that game had a better story and more stages, it would have been perfect. So basically, I'm hoping Project 2017 is a more "complete" Generations.

Except for 2 of the DiC Cartoons, Sonic was never really a comedy series then 2010 the new writers (who knew nothing of the series) tried to turn it into 1. The true fans always liked having playable characters who weren't Sonic. 3K's great reception by the fanbase is because the game had 3 Playable characters, Sonic Adventure & it's sequel tried to take that & make it work for 3D. Both would have 6 playable characters (12 for SA2 if you count the 2P Battle Mode characters), these days fans of the characters who aren't Sonic get screwed over.

This is my favorite 3D Sonic game (yes even better then the adventure games, come at me). True, I did not enjoy it first because the 2D control sucked and I thought the level design was boring, I even returned the game and never got back to it for a couple years until a few weeks ago. Let me just say that game whole game is better when you get all the wisps and creates a whole new perspective for every level. If you don't like them... then okay. I actually did not like them at first.

After watching BSC’s re-play of this game: Kinda funny how this video is a time capsule of how the community viewed the game and many people in the comment section were hating an overzealous SA2 fan in the comments who wouldn’t let people enjoy this game over SA... and now most of the comment section is adamant on saying this game is a massive step down compared to SA2. Am I the only one who wants to see Johnny re-review Sonic and the Black Knight and Sonic Colors? I know that not many people like these games anymore(Black Knight was awesome and I would rank Colors above Adventure and Heroes imo), but I want to see a Johnny vs. on these games with better quality and writing. hey John, yknow when you said you didnt know why Sonic no longer does the Spin Dash? well in my head canon, i like to think of it as an age thing. like Classic Sonic is Modern Sonic's younger self, and as u know, when you're a kid, you dont run as fast as u do as an adult. so i like to think when Sonic was young, and his legs were shorter, he couldnt get to top speed as fast as he wanted, so he developed the Spin Dash, then when he got older, he realized he could get to top speed without rolling so he stopped. now i honestly havent played too many sonic games, or seen much of the t.v. series' or read any comics, but like i said, this is something i thought about after watching your Sonic reviews. and i know in Sonic X he kinda does the Spin Dash when fighting knuckles, but still

Sonic Colours for the DS was my first Sonic game and got me into the series. I loved the absolute crap out of it, and I still do. It's a great game and definitely worth it. Favorite 3D Sonic Game: Sonic Heroes > SA2 (i remember watching this in 2010) (also prove me wrong DarkSonic180) while i can understand that there are clearly some things wrong with it, Sonic Heroes was still a very fun time for me and i loved pretty much the entire game... (Baring Special Stages) and i would love to see another attempt at the team mechanic the game had with more characters and more abilities to work with. While i love SA2, i still think (*In My Opinion*) Sonic Heroes is my favorite 3D Sonic Game because i loved the whole thing, the Team Mechanic, the Level Design was really good, has a very underrated soundtrack that is one of my favorites to take time out of my day to listen to and the level's are all unique to the game, (While SA2 had some stages that are literal day/Night versions of 1 stage with different level design/gimmick) i love simple stories in games so it gets right to the point, but at the same time still keeps me interested with the writing. I even love Sonic Colors story more than SA2 because of the simplicity and the voice cast/writing (Not to say that SA2 had none of that, i still love SA2's Story, i just love Sonic Heroes and Colors stories more) SA2 definitely has some high points like the chao garden, the soundtrack, (while not as enjoyable as other sonic games to me, still has some amazing tunes) memorable lines/voice acting *and in Battles case* the best multiplayer for a Sonic Game to date, has a few low points like level design in the speed sections being very linear most of the time, "the SA2 Syndrome" of everything being mapped to 1 button, cheap enemy placements in the mech stages and while the stages are unique to the game and are very memorable are recycled from time to time. I still love the game to death, but i just love Sonic Heroes and maybe even Sonic Unleashed more than it... and plus i am not one of those blind Sonic fanboys who think that SA2 is the best Sonic game in the series and every other game sucks compared to it because my opinion is always right and anyone who thinks otherwise should "slit their throats" *Looks at DarkSonic180* (for the record i didn't even know this was happening until i came back to this review to read the comments myself) I will say that i didn't really enjoy Colors as much as other people did, but i still think it is a really great game and showed us more to the boost gameplay instead of just playing itself like Sonic Unleashed, you actually had to think of good points to use or not use the boost, and the wisps were fun additions to sonic's arsenal with also including Sonic's old abilities like the light speed dash and the spin dash so multiple abilities on one button were not present, *Looks at Sonic Adventure 2.* I did like the soundtrack on this one as well, (Duh Sonic Game) but in my opinion it doesn't even compare to Sonic Heroes for me or SA1 because i love Sonic Soundtracks that are varied and that each of them have their own themes and while this game's music is varied on it's own, i still think that SA1 and Heroes had more variety and genres than Colors did because most of the music sounds a little alike with their instruments, which is also why i am only into a little bit of SA2's Soundtrack because it is 75% Rock/Guitar and 25% Rap and Smooth Jazz. Overall, i love all 3 games i discussed and im just stating my opinion on why i love a certain game better than the one either discussed here or whenever someone hates looking at another's opinion. i hope you all understand where i am coming from.

Hmm, I need to play this game again. I thought it was overall a pleasant experience but I could definitely talk about the game's problems all day (too much 2D, too many jokes). Still, I appreciate Colors not adding in any unnecessary alternate gameplay or not trying to make me take a game about cartoon animals seriously. It's fairly well put together, actually polished (which I more than I can say for several games in this series), and features Eggman as the main villain again. Yeah Eggman all the way. Fuck Black Doom and Mephiles and those other lame-os. Also its pretty hilarious to see people get their panties in a bunch because Johnny said it was better than SA2. Sorry Adventure fanboys, but not everyone thinks the Adventure games were perfect.

Honestly, what I think Sonic team should do is take the best elements of the Genesis (and to a lesser extent, the Advance and Rush series) Sonic games (physics, rolling, actual platforming) and make it work in 3D. And take time to polish it. That's one of the main problems of 3D Sonic. @@psychie8625 The hint systems were great in Sonic Adventure 2 there's just a bit of a learning curve with them. 1st hint is vague, 2nd hint is more general, 3rd hint spells it out for you. There are plenty of hint monitors in the stages as well. It's called getting good through experience to be able to do them faster with less hints. You should see the speedruns like the Gauntlet Challenge some time. I admit the radar can be annoying, although Knuckles & Rouge feel great to play as & their controls more than make up for the radar. Of course there are also the 2nd & 3rd missions for those who don't like Treasure Hunting. You should really try giving them another chance.

I think it was mostly a joke. Madworld was mostly written by Yasumi Matsuno, also known from the Vagrant Story. Happy Tree Friends the series was written by Kenn Navarro and Rhode Montijo. However, looking at the writing credits for Sonic Colours, the writing team is actually completely new. Two guys had indeed been on the MadWorld writing team, one of them wrote the Happy Tree Friends videogame, among a dozen other things he worked on, and one was on Shenmue and Phantasy Star teams. I don't think this is good for any conclusions whatsoever, except that they have indeed picked a team with serious writing experience. These guys are mostly freelancers though, they go from one unrelated project to another. They re-hired this team to write Sonic Generations though.

I hate the Sonic fanbase so much. Every time someone says something like, "Colors is better than Adventure 2." A part of the fanbase attack that person and anyone that agrees with him. *Looks at the various things Colours does right* *Looks towards the various unneeded changes that SA2 made to SA1, and then went on to make an inferior sequel* Yeah, sure. The only thing SA2 ha going for it is the Chao Garden, and the Multiplayer. SA2's story has to be the most overrated in the franchise. It has a few interesting moments, but these are few and far between. Not to mention that the very best parts of the story happen at the start, and then the end. Hell, SA1 had a better story than this. Truth be told. You need more than exposition and character development to craft a good story. There's hardly any humour, there's no sense of an upbeat tone, boring and somewhat forced dialogue, horrific voice acting. Heroes has a far better story than this. Colours isn't perfect, far from it. But it's a much better game than the Adventure games IMO. SA2 doesn't have the worst story, but it's far from the best.

Colours doesn't pander to anyone. Fans told SEGA to actually put some effort into the next game, and they did. Besides, it's a good idea to listen your fan base (especially when it's a part of it that doesn't bitch about everything) There are many storylines in anything Sonic related that beat out SA2 in terms of tone and story telling. The only pandering is in generations, which is clearly fuelled by nostalgia (which isn't a bad thing at all. Even better considering the lack of nostalgic elements in Post Heroes Sonic games) Sonic Rush & Adventure. Sonic Advance series. Sonic Heroes. Sonic OVA Sonic SATAM The list continues.

Sonic Colours was made with one mind-set. "make a good Sonic game" Oh yes. because taking one of the few decent entries in the Sonic series and then crafting a game from it is totally a bad idea *shot* Actually it is. If you ignore you're fan base, then you're doing the exact opposite of what a game is supposed to do, make money. If you don't listen to what fans want, then well what do you think will happen?. Relying on a commentary based on Sonic because you can't think of anything creative to say yourself, oh the irony. From what it seems. You appear to be "fuck 2D, love 3D" whilst flaming Sonic games that are actually worth playing. Nostalgia isn't a bad thing. It goes to show you actually remember you have a fan base. Sa2's story is good. But, it's no where near as good as other fans make it out to be. It's not even entertaining, I found more entertainment in a game with almost no story, in comparison.

Sonic Unleashed was good, much better than anything the 3D title's even bothered trying. I didn't say it did. I said it uses gameplay similar to it, whilst throwing 2D into the mix. So long as you make quality title's, you can. Not listening to the people who keep your series alive by buying your product is a good idea?. It's franchise's like Resident Evil that are falling of the face of the earth, because they never listened to it's fan base after it's 90's career was over. Sonic is in the same position. Instead of sticking with a consistent style of gameplay that people like. Sonic game stick with forceful gimmicks that fans are forced to use in order to play the game. Not to mention fan fiction like stories, pathetic characters, a direction that never worked to begin with, along with the complete demolition of what made Sonic games what they were. SPONGESWAGLOLMYD i can see the appeal in SA2 over colors, but I love the boost formula, but ik that its not for everyone and yeah I love SA2 and I'll play it more than colors thats for sure, but if I want some good platforming with modern sonic and like boosting around really fast, then ill play colors, not to say that SA2 isnt fast, oh no by all means sonic is fast, unlike sonic 06 and sonic boom rise of lyric, sonic 06 does have much speed(and no its NOT SA3) and i swear that the characters in legend of zelda hyrule warriors are faster than sonic from sonic boom rise of lyric other than when you're on rails or using the pause glitch to get speed, but even then the pause glitch is only temporary speed

SPONGESWAGLOLMYD exactly, generations got it perfect and then they fucked it up, fuck sonic boom rise of lyric, theres NO SPEED WHATSOEVER, sure you cant get much speed in generations without boosting but you could still get a decent amount of speed, SA1 was pretty much perfect in its own right, but yeah the camera could've been a lot better, the animations im perfectly fine with in either the DX or normal version but thats just me, I think that the DX version of SA1 had a better camera, but im not 100% sure on that, I havent played SA1:DX in a while but the only thing that I hated about the camera was it getting obstructed by something, but other than that, moving the camera is fine with the gamecube controller or if you have the PC version, moving the mouse should be good enough for moving the camera. also SEGA has to stop rushing sonic games i mean SRSLY, the only good sonic game that ik that was good even though it was rushed would be generations but i think that because of its success SEGA thinks that they can rush any sonic game and get away with it. START LISTENING TO THE FANS AGAIN SEGA PLZ, JUST STOP RUSHING SONIC GAMES, WE DONT CARE IF IT TAKES LONGER TO BE RELEASED, JUST AS LONG AS ITS GOOD!
