17:55...It was very common right up until at least the 19th century for sailors not to know how to swim (the superstition being that if you knew how to then your ship was more likely to sink and you'd have to use that skill. Also if your ship sunk in the middle of the ocean where would you swim to...far better to die quickly than prolong your suffering).

Normally seppuku is an individual responsibility of the one who has caused offence or dishonor so he didn't have to bring his son into it which emphasises he acts without thinking.

He offered to commit seppuku and disinherit his own lineage in order to redeem the honor of his lord, as he had tarnished his lord's name through his own selfish actions. To sever the lineage, his son also had to die similarly. And drawing a sword in that situation itself was a crime punishable by death, so there was also the purpose of apply to protect honor before it was imposed as a punishment.

I am Japanese. Some people seem to be making a fuss that there are no black people in SHOGUN. If there are people who are complaining, I think they should just write the story themselves, decide on the cast, and create an attractive work. Decades before this era, a black slave who served Nobunaga was named Yasuke and became a samurai. However, Nobunaga was assassinated and Yasuke was stripped of his samurai status and disappeared. Before him, there were no black people in Japan. And there are no samurai who have black blood. Also, at the time of this drama, there were no Americans coming to Japan, only Europeans. Also, there were no black aristocrats in Europe at the time.
