Today On Sh*t I Never Knew we cover the verdict on running WD-40 on your Chrome Wheels for winter! After some winter testing we have decided that WD40 does NOT protect chrome. Run a Different set of wheels in the winter and store your chrome ones away!

Ceramic coating is probably your best bet for protecting chrome wheels in the winter.

Been using WD-40 to protect chrome since the 80s... we just didn't have KZbin to publish it. If you are in a state where there is a lot of salt used in the winter, I would use a heavier oil to protect the chrome. It doesn't have to be a thick layer. OR, just get a "cheapocrap" vehicle to drive in the winter, and save your expensive vehicle!

Light coat of wax works to protect them. You can also used a 3000 grid sand paper to remove the salt damage

I have sprayed WD40 on my chrome rims to clean them. It has removed dirt marks, grease marks, and never damaged the chrome. Not even a little bit. But....I only let them sit for like 5 minutes..then wash them out with soap. I have never let them sit long term in storage with WD40. I guess WD40 will damage only if you let it sit for a long time while storing them. I just wash mine and put them in plastic bags when I store my rims. But good to know that WD40 can and will damage chrome if let sit for long periods of time..sorry about your rims though.......

My truck was spotless for 3 years then I moved up here and every winter the rust just evolved. Not too bad the first year scrubbed it off but damn by the time I sold it to carmax with a bit over 200000 miles I got out for the last time and the chrome side step broke off.

Try white diamond metal polish and a bonus you can use it to clear up head lights and it adds a protective coating to whatever you apply it to and you can get it at Walmart or any auto parts store and it is like 15 bucks a bottle I use it on everything and it won't hurt the paint on Ur vehicle if it gets on it

My 93 VR4 has very shiny chrome wheels that came factory. They're scratched, sure, but there isn't any pitting. My brother and father both bought new sets of chrome Raceline truck wheels. One set is lightly pitting in the spokes, while the other is EXTREMELY ruined, to the point that the surface hurts to touch. Same weather here in Louisiana. New chrome ain't what it used to be apparently..

WD eats away varous coatings (like clear coats) and dulls surfaces as it penetrates deeply. It is likely similar results accelerated on painted rims but will take longer. Best without it, ruined some of mine significantly in a short time.

Vaseline is also the best thing you can use on a dash. It'll collect dust like crazy for a couple weeks but it will never crack. Armor All and other cleaners dry out the dash and will cause it to bust.

I've always had good luck with WD-40 on chrome on my Harley here in Cleveland. The trick is you can't wash the chrome in the winter or it won't work. My chrome had so much salt on it that it looked like I had barnacles on my chrome, but never washed untill spring. 5 winters and people can't believe it's the same bike. WD-40 trick works if done correctly. Gotta really lay it down thick and let dry (dries to a parafin film)

I'm fairly certain that the problem is the chrome plated aluminium wheels. They flex they expand and contract with temp variations a lot. And aluminum alloys are subject to galvanic corrosion when in contact with a more noble material in a salty environment. That and new chroming processes suck. Old steel chrome wheels and bumpers are almost indestructible.

Would a clear hydro dipped chrome wheel make it through the winter/salt? I think ive seen chrome hydro dipping before, you could do that instead of a powder coat.

PVD chrome should be okay I would think since they're not chrome plated but sprayed on and clear coated. Should work just like painted wheels I would think. anybody done this on PVD chrome?

It takes next to nothing to get chromed aluminum these days to pit. I never drive my 09 Challenger whenever there's salt on the road, and my Torq Thrusts are still pitted.

Amsoil metal protector will not ruin any surface guaranteed.

Winter salt and mag chloride will ruin chrome unless rinsed daily

Ryan P I believe they would be worse if not treated at all. The first 60 days they held up but the last 3 months was just too much salt. This truck is daily driven and barely washed and left outside.

Typically its not as noticeable on other finishes than chrome. Just make sure you regularly clean and protect your wheels as needed and you should not see any issues with them!

Pits are not from road salt or anything phosphurus. They are caused from the poor aloy metals used to manufacture the aluminum.

these are probably plastic coated anyway so what ever you put on them never touches any metal surfaces. You should try to take care of some polished aluminum wheels the deep dish like these, omg the paste polish turns black when you rub it in and you will polish till cows come home lol

yep I live in nh and I just get a few cans of plasti dip from amazon spray a few layers and 6 months later peel off and give them a old shine no pits no rust like new same rims for 3 yrs now through a lot of salt plus I live on dirt roat.

On my Harley, I underwent shoulder surgery with a year recovery, all my chrome pitted while in storage, ( in an unconditioned outdoor carport under a custom Harley cover) I just got finished cleaning all the chrome parts with 0000 steel wool and metal cleaner buffed with micro fiber cloth. It looks brand new. With winter around the corner in the NE, what do you recommend if anything I can coat the crime with to HELP preventing it from pitting again. I respect and appreciate your advice.

WD40 is a cleaning solution not a lubricant so idk why everybody always tries to use it like it is.... it literally says its a cleaner on it so whoever suggested that must not like whatever they are spraying it on lol just like the guys that try to tell me to use it on my chrome for my harley and my trucks lol i use never dull and some nice polish but never wd40 ..

Well, when you're dealing with wheels, your dealing with brake dust, which is hard particles that will scratch anything you rub it on. To be fair though, those particles will drop to the bottom of the bucket and, unless you dip the sponge to the bottom of your bucket, the chances of picking them up off of the bottom is null. I would, however, rinse the sponge out thoroughly, often!

Those rims are Hostile knuckles. They're not chrome. They're PVD. PVD Sucks. And so do Hostile knuckles. I should know. I have the same exact crappy rims.

caincolesr Hostile and most other companies got away from PVD. It was promised to work miracles but failed. These are chrome as they are the newer or older version but not the PVD version.
